Terrible rooms, dirty and “black holes” - see pictures

We just arrived at the hotel and the rooms are nothing like what you see in the pictures advertised by the hotel. The rooms are small and very dark - just a window you can’t see anything through. Also, the rooms are not clean. We are so disappointed because we were expecting a luxury hotel and this is a sort of hostel. They don’t even offer you alternatives or ways of getting a refund. Very bad experience, strongly not suggested.

We stayed at the Moana for 4 days in August 2019, Tower, partial ocean view. 13th Room with king-bed large, quiet. Tower (ca 1969), has an eccentric room layout with the small closet, safe are inside the bathroom with the sink, toilet and shower. This is inconvenient, for a beach hotel. Tower needs update...few plugs...no USB...Wi-Fi coverage spotty. Bed comfortable but soft mattress...AC not up the job in hot/humid weather: Maxed-out but room temps mid-day ~ 75, only ~70 at night. Tower view from odd-numbered rooms dominated by adj. Outrigger tower, with no privacy on the balcony. Higher room-#'s offer a better view than lower. Even-numbered rooms should afford a vastly superior view. The Beach Club is great if you have access...good breakfast (bacon, eggs,...) and appetizers in the late afternoon (wine, cheese,...)....Basic munchies, fruit, beverages all the time. Very helpful and friendly staff. Excellent, central location within Waikiki, friendly staff (though the front-desk is occasionally understaffed)...Beautiful grounds, especially the Banyan Court & Pool, which is small but fine for kids. (Per current custom, all the lounge chairs are "reserved" with towels by mid-morning, but mostly empty throughout the day.) The Beachside Bar is a lovely place to relax with a decent Mai Tai, and just a few steps from the pool or beach. Be ready to pay roughly $ 110/night for taxes + "resort-fee", plus $ 45/night for valet Parking (Self-parking is $ 35/night, but 1/2-block away)

    Great Location, Good Hotel

Stayed for four nights at the Westin Moana Surfrider and found it to be a solid choice in a great location. One of the negatives was the check-in process which was slow and a bit disorganized. Our room (Tower Ocean Suite) was spacious and had a great view. The hotel is centrally located in Waikiki and has direct access to the beach which was convenient. However, the hotel’s pool is very small and crowded. We had access to the Beach Club Lounge which had a reasonably good selection for breakfast but offered very limited food the rest of the day as compared to other club lounges that we have been in. Overall though a pleasant stay.

Staff was great, reasonably priced and got upgraded to a room with an ocean view for $50/night (disclosure: Marriott Gold). The pool and beach are wonderful but you’ll pay resort prices. Staff was exceptional and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

5 Star experience, 1 star after "resort fee" charge

When we arrived we were greeted on the steps with a lei by lovely staff. Check in was easy and we were able to get a quiet room facing the pool. The room was clean and spacious. The location on the beach is fabulous (even though the beach is extremely busy, but as we expected). We opted in for the breakfast included and the buffet was definitely worth it. At breakfast, we were seated beside the beach for a beautiful view and breakfast was plentiful and delicious. We can't say enough about our 2 night stay at the Moana Surfrider. However, a few days after we left the hotel we noticed a charge on our credit card for $112 CAD (about $85 USD), I called to inquire thinking we had missed something during check out or were inadvertently charged by mistake. Well, to our surprise, there is a $40+ resort fee charged to all rooms per night. We spoke with the hotel representative (Todd) he assured me this would have been listed on our confirmation. It was not. After he reviewed our confirmation, he agreed it was a miscommunication and his supervisor agreed to waive the resort fee for one night. Well, it has been 3 weeks since we left the Moana Surfrider and over 2 weeks since talking with the hotel. We still have NOT been refunded the resort fee. If there is always a resort fee, include it in the hotel cost from the beginning. Hidden costs after the fact is very shady. It certainly tainted our great experience at the hotel.
