Family Trip with 8 and 4 Year Old

We traveled in Nov with 2 kids (4 & 8), we typically go to the Rivera Maya this time each year (Off peak, good weather) and try to stay at a different hotel each time. Overall and in comparison to the otter place we’ve stayed (Barecelo, Palladium, IberoStar and Paradisus) the Hard Rock offered very good service, good quality food and nice grounds) Rooms. • We stayed in a Deluxe Double with 2 queens beds in the 9th block on the 3rd floor. • Room was very nice but in comparison to the other hotels we’ve stayed at it was small (Paradisus was triple the size for the same room category). • Also, the queen beds were not queens (probably full), making it very uncomfortable if 2 adults or even an adult or kid is sharing. (There was very limited room if any for a roll out bed) • We stayed on the Hacienda Family Side which has room blocks 6, 7, 9 and 9. If you stay on the even number side of the 9th block you have an interior view of the grounds/pool, some also have a good ocean view, we were in block 9300 which offered a pool and ocean view. If you are in block 9 but with an odd number room you would be facing to the exterior of the hotel (tree’s). Block 6 is in the middle and straddles the adult side. Block 7 and 8 are in the middle of the family side and closest to the restaurants. • Note: The resort is small enough where location doesn’t really matter (other than views) Beach • There isn’t a beach directly on the ocean, if you are looking for your typical Caribbean/Rivera Maya expansive beach this isn’t a great option. • Instead a lagoon man made beach is offered with a small beach and ocean water that comes in through the gaps in the rocks. • If you have younger kids this could be a great option as they can swim without waves all day long, for older kids it’s probably too small. (Our 4 year old spend hours in the ocean) • The beach area is also very small, it wasn’t an issue for our visit as no one was there but at peak times I can imagine it being packed • The drinks service on the beach was also very good. • There’s also a bar right on the beach • Also connected to the lagoon is a small snorkeling area, they have masks and lifejackets (just missing fish!) – There’s also Kayaks that you can use, but given how small the beach/lagoon area is they just get in the way • Although there are a number of lagoons, for families there’s only one real beach option Pool • There’s a main pool, kids splash and mini water park area and in a different section a big water park • The main pool doesn’t have a “main” area but consists of areas/polls that snake around. • In the main pool area (to the side) there is also a water slide which the kids enjoyed • The pool offered a swim up bar and also 3 different food options (pizza, buffet and a mini burger stand). Not all hotels have food options right at the pool which was great so you didn’t have to leave to eat lunch • In a separate area (5 minute walk from main pool), there’s a pretty large standalone (free) water park which is great for older kids (The biggest hotel based water park that we’ve been to in this area – bigger than the one at Barcelo). There’s snack food here but no alcohol Restaurants • With kids you have 5 specialty restaurant options which were all very good (Steak, Brazilian Rodizio, Mexican, Hibachi, Asian). • There’s also the main buffet which was fine but fairly small and limited options compared to other resorts that we’ve been to. • Reservations are taken in the main lobby from 7am onwards, you can book up to 3 days in advance. During off peak times they closed restaurants on certain nights although we were able to eat at all 5. • We didn’t pay for the additional “butler/VIP” package but the benefit is that you have much better and easier access to making reservations (You simply text your concierge. If you are travelling off peak it’s probably not need but during peak times I can see reservations being a challenge • There’s also a coffee/gelato/sandwich/Salad shop in the main lobby. • There’s also plenty of bottled water around the resort and in the rooms. • Service was very good Hotel Grounds • Well kept, clean hotel. • Compared to other resorts it didn’t seem to offer that typically “Mexican” resort feel Shows • Most of the shows are in the main theater which is indoors and has more of a conference style room feel to it, we prefer the outdoor show/stage area vs being indoors on vacation. • Other than the Michael Jackson show they were very average, we were expecting a lot more from the Hard Rock. • The main show is at 8.30pm which means you need reservations no later than 7pm to make the show. • The kids club show/activity is typically at 7pm in the main lobby, we went one night and it was okay for younger kids (Up to 6). It wasn’t as good as some of the other hotels we’ve stayed at. E.g. Barcelo has a much more extensive kids show offering General • The hotel also offers “unlimited” resort credits which can be used for excursions/spa treatment etc. Basically 1 point is 1 dollar so if an excursion is $200 you just pay a 25% service fee (You get the excursion for $50 per person). The excursion are limited to what the in house company offers. • The hotel is approx. 1 hour from the airport (We always use USA Transfers, cost for 4 people approx. $130 round trip) • SCHEDULED POWER OUTAGE - I had read about this in the reviews but thought it was infrequent. However, we experienced one of these 7am to 3pm scheduled power outages, in all the years of staying in this area we have never experienced these scheduled outages which makes me believe that this could be just specific to hotels in this very local area. During this outage there is no A/C (rooms or restaurants) and during the first hour we had no lights. Also, this means NO FROZEN ALCOHOLIC DRINKS!!

Our experience at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya has been absolutely great. The staff has been super welcoming and positive throughout our stay; the facilities are kept clean and maintained regularly. There is great attention to detail in both the choices of activities in the resort as well as with excursions. The food is great in almost all the restaurants (although Frida was slightly subpar compared to the others) and there is a great choice and variety. Would definitely recommend.

Brilliant hotel! My boyfriend and I stayed here all inclusive for 2 weeks and absolutely loved it! On arrival to the hotel we were greeted by friendly staff, check in was super quick and because the hotel is HUGGEE we got a golf buggy to our room where staff helped us with suitcases. There are 2 main sites on the complex - heaven (adults only) and hacienda (family). We stayed on the hacienda side, but your able to use facilities on both. To walk from one to the other takes no longer than 5-10 minutes - however golf buggy’s are constantly on the go in you can’t be bothered or unable to walk. We stayed in a double deluxe room - this included 2 small double beds, a jacuzzi bath, walk in shower and balcony with a hammock. Mini fridges are all inclusive too and are stocked daily. The hotel provides shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotions, which are also stocked up daily! 24 hour room service is always on the go too if feeling peckish! The room also includes a hair dryer, iron & electronic safe. I took my GHD straighteners with me, but these just didn’t work in any plug socket, so ladies make sure you have a good hair oil as the humidity will have you feeling like Monica from friends! The hotel is located right on the beach, its literally a staircase down from the pool. There are around 4-5 beaches as you walk down, all which you can use, towels are provided by the hotel so don’t waste valuable packing space! The beaches are BEAUTIFUL! Waiters walk up and down the beaches taking drink orders so you don’t have to find a bar! The wildlife around the hotel is amazing! The fish are so colourful and eat food right out of your hands! Iguanas, monkeys and raccoons also rome around the hotel grounds which is lovely to see! There are more than enough sun beds round the pools and hotel entertainment during the day was brilliant. They play music all day, Aqua spinning classes, volleyball, foam parties and lots for the kids too (kidzbop). Couldn’t fault the night entertainment. Located in the hacienda lobby is a theatre which has a show on every night. From Michael Jackson tribute to African circus and acrodance (Mexico’s got talent semi finalist). shows are also played within the lobbies and there is a nightclub with jacuzzis and swimming pool located in Heaven. The complex has 6 restaurants and a buffet which practically runs all day. 1. Zen - Chinese 2. Le petit - French 3. Los Gallos - authentic Mexican 4. Ipanema - Brazilian 5. Fridas - traditional Mexican 6. Caio - Italian The restaurants are not what you would expect from an all inclusive! Food is amazing and presentation is beautiful. Even the buffet food has different themes each night, makes omelettes fresh at breakfast, and has pizza ovens and a burger station for lunch and dinners. The complex also consists of a water park - unfortunately we didn’t use this & a skate park along with trampolines and obstacle courses. There is a spa on site, escapes rooms (this was not yet open- I think it opens end of November), studios to records music and also a facility to shoot your own music video. The hotel has a few shops within both lobbies, such as a Hard Rock shop selling T-shirt’s, key rings etc.. all things hard rock! A Jewellery store, a beach store with swimsuits and kaftans, a Mexican memorabilia store, sunglasses store and a billabong. There is also an on-site coffee shop (all inclusive) which has ice creams, cakes, croissants - literally feels like a little Starbucks! Highly recommend this hotel for families, couples and friends all looking for either a relaxing holiday or a party holiday, they really do cater to everybody’s preferences!

Our travel to Riviera Maya this time, our 4th time, we brought our grown children. We had an awesome time and introduced our adult children to a whole new world of vacation. I would like to mention Carmen in Public relations concierge who helped us when our son booked the wrong flight day out. She was very helpful in getting him an extension to his room. Thank you Hard Rock. Rocks every time.

Beautiful setting right on the water. Steak and lobster dinner with champagne served by Antonio who was very friendly and did everything possible to make the evening special. Music provided by couple with violin and accordion.
