Most everyone knows the name Frank Lloyd Wright and can tell you he was an architectural genius. But if you truly want to understand the remarkable vision and design philosophies of this American original, take a guided tour of Taliesin West. It was Wright's "winter camp," built with desert-sourced materials on a 550-acre spread in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains in northeast Scottsdale.
Today, the Taliesin West grounds are home to the international headquarters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture (it's not uncommon for tour groups to encounter students) and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Archives.
A wide range of group and private tours are offered September through May. The tours provide an in-depth viewing of Wright's living and studio spaces and Taliesin's communal areas, including the film-screening room, cabaret and pavilion. Take the "night lights tour" to see Taliesin's awe-inspiring spaces and decorative sculpture installations in a more romantic light.
