    Great Beach - Nice Resort

After reading several reviews for the Sol Rio Luna y Mares I can see both sides of the coin on the pros and cons staying here but honestly everything is very nice. The room we had on the Luna side was older but clean and the beach was super emerald green. Food was OK but repetitive and choice of fruit was pretty much limited to papaya and watermelon - had bananas one day during our stay. The grounds are truly lovely to walk around and there was always a spot to enjoy our daily cappuccino either Mares or Luna side. Felt like we were always discovering something new here. Enjoyed the walk to the Paradisus tour with Robert and the Guana park trail next door. I know some folks have been posting some comments here about the locals staying at the resort on weekends and affecting the quality of their stay with lines, behaviour, etc. but we just didn't see this as being a problem but truthfully I was more disappointed with my Canadian neighbours from Quebec who were quite inconsiderate with smoking everywhere as if it was their last day for a cigarette - in the lobby, on the walk paths, on the beach with the wonderful ocean breeze blowing smoke in your face constantly - come on guys, take it easy out there in paradise with obnoxious behaviour.

Feb 13-20 Bottom line of this review is that you are going to a 4 star resort in Cuba, if you expect a 5 star resort you will be disappointed but if you come in with an open mind you will have a great experience. Transportation starts in a nice coach bus once you get off the airplane comfy, air conditioned and friendly staff, the resort itself is nice, its a 4 star resort with a 5 star beach so keep this in mind. Our room was okay no mold as we had heard people complain about so that was a bonus. As for the food goes its Cuba if you want gourmet 5 star meals pay more and go elsewhere but if you're okay with mediocre food it will be a good experience, there are options of different sit in restaurants those are a nice break from the caf food that you eat the rest of the stay. The beach here is mindblowing, absolutely incredible white sand, blue waters and very long beach so never too crowded. They offer fun beach activities and water sport on the beach as well which are quite popular. As a mid 20's male on the trip with a significant other we found the first few days of the trip the resort was almost all retirees or soon to be retirees but the demographic shifted into the next week and we met some younger people that made the last few days a lot more social and fun. The Bad!! February 14th was Cuban National day and more than 200+ Nationals flooded the hotel causing unfathomable waits for food, making it impossible to get drinks and ordering dozens of burgers and snacks from the 24/7 snackbar to put in their bags leaving the resort out of food by 10pm, this experience could have ruined the trip had it been near the end of our experience but luckily it was near the beginning and was forgotten as the days carried on but this needed to be mentioned as it really did leave a sour taste in my mouth during the 24 hours we were not a priority for the resort. Otherwise the place is amazing and is definitely a great value for the price you pay their coffee bar is amazing and their specialty coffees were incredible. Bottom line if you are looking for a 5 star resort this is not it however for the price you pay to go here it is an amazing value with amazing people running the resort

VALENTINES DAY RUINED MY VACATION IN CUBA

First off I have always believed that writing a review, in a manner that first tells the honest truth about a resort, as well being fair but firm. I have over the past twenty five years have travelled extensively travelled to Cuba. I will write my review in point form so its not like most reviews long winded. -FLIGHTS- departure was from Halifax , NS with Sunwing. Plane was late , seat broken garbage in seating area. Departure flight back to Halifax again late. ARRIVAL IN HOLGUIN- Typical entry procedures into Cuba, all in all this went very well. TRANSPORTATION TO RESORT- Large bus comfortable and right from the get go the Cuban guide asking to give money or tip to driver. this is normal practise. ARRIVAL AT RESORT- Normal check in not really any problems at check in. ROOM-And this is where is all begins, our room was clean at first site, we departed Halifax at 7ish pm and finally got into our room at 4am. The room was in need of repairs, but acceptable, one thing we were pretty disgusted about was the sheets were NOT clean, in fact the sheets had sand everywhere. BEACH- Amazing , clean, beach bar was nice, lots of chairs , what else can I say. Staff at beach was okay, not to friendly to be honest. Dinning- The main meal hall had constant Line up for meals, pretty much a free for all buffet style,(COCKROACHES) near the food were also noticed, meals were the same each day, ignorant travellers with no manners especially locals who seemed to be at this resort. This resort was full and on Valentines day there was a SWARM of locals ranging from 200+ at the resort , line up started at 6;30 and at 9pm there was still a line up, the hotel did not tell the guest who have travelled from all over that there would be that many locals with family there all weekend, they literally took over the resort, meal areas, pool, beach areas, there was MANY upset people during this time, the resort management did not care as long as they were making money. On valintines day we did not eat dinner because there were to many locals with line ups over sixty feet long, we went to the snack bar to try another place, the snack bar was open 24hrs a day. When we went to the snack bar we were met with a very ignorant bar tender , who was obviously over worked, plus there was a local wedding happening at the same time. The hotel management had placed so much pressure on its workers that some of them told us they were upset ! in my opinion the management staff should all be fired ! they had very little regard for guest . This was my seventh trip to Cuba, the last time was in 2007, and just this past Feb 9th -16th. Cuba has become in my opinion a place I will NOT travel to anymore. Back in 2003 on my first trip the staff actually cared about guest, today it has become nothing but a money making machine, and anyone with travel experience can see this. This resort should be avoided and should not be a 4 star , maybe twenty years ago but definitely not today. TO THE MANAGEMENT WHO WILL READ THIS - Canadian people enjoy Cuba, but please don't be fooled by our kindness, it does not mean we will tolerate bad service, we will simply just not come back. You should treat ALL guest no matter if its there first time or 10th time all the same ! I am VERY disappointed at how much Cuba has changed ! If valentines day is such a big deal in Cuba, where the resort will be taken over by locals then PUT IT ON YOUR WEB PAGE. People need to know ! Tourism is your biggest money maker, but that can change very quickly if you don't treat guest properly. Customer service area is a waste of time, they have no intention of helping unless your paying! they are not there to help at all ! I highly suggest that Canadians start looking at other places then Cuba to travel to. I will not be back to Cuba.

Twelve times at this place and planning many more. You really get great value for the price you are paying. I don’t go to Cuba for a five star meals or newly renovated rooms with jacuzzi tubs, but for amazing beaches, turquoise ocean, and friendly and helpful staff who always greet you with smiles on their happy faces. Even though life in Cuba is not easy for them right now. From early morning tennis, walk on the beach and cappuccino made by Giacomo at the snack bar to late night mojito at the quiet Luna bar, this place is perfect. My Spanish is improving a bit every time I go, thanks to Irina, my beautiful and thoughtful Spanish teacher. She is an amazing lady, splitting her work time between kids club and Spanish lessons, doing both duties efficiently and effortlessly. I could go on and on, but I will let my pictures tell the story. Hope you will also choose this place for your next holiday!

    Amazing Beach, Good Hotel

We stayed a week mid-February 2020 and have been to this resort about 5 years ago and many other areas of Cuba as well as other hotels in this area. We were provided separate wristbands because of this fact but aside from an invite to a special dinner, I'm not sure what we were entitled to as it was never explained. The pros - the beach is amazing extremely wide and a lot of natural shade, the resort is small and easy to get everywhere, all public washrooms were extremely clean, there was generally no need to reserve chairs as there was always room at the beach and pool, and there were a few staff members who certainly went above and beyond (all the coffee bar servers, Yanet at the Luna lobby and beach bar and Marle at the buffet to name a few). The cons - as others have mentioned, the rooms are dated so don't expect new or modern, the food while simple but decent is repetitive and things often run out so be aware if you need a lot of variety (i.e. no fries or bacon the entire stay, pizza or cheese not available at points), staff everywhere try hard but are genuinely busy and overworked and it is clear there should be a few extra servers everywhere to help with the load. wine was also not great and we ended up paying to purchase upgraded bottles at dinner. We had a great vacation overall but mostly knew what we were getting based on past experience. A few extra things to mention, as someone else pointed out Valentine's Day was a whole new ball game at this resort - Cuban families swarmed in and took over which could have resulted in a fun time by all but unfortunately resulted in long lines everywhere including to get into the buffet, with a lot of individuals cutting in lines, seating themselves ahead of others who had been waiting, and generally making it feel they were entitled to more than other guests. There were a few other issues, for example the shower head in our room couldn't be hung on the hook so we had to hand shower with it every night. We had mentioned it to the maid on day 1 who said it would be fixed but it never was. Water takes forever to get hot but we always had hot water after running it for a while. Beds are not very comfortable but a/c worked well the whole time. Only 1 bottle of water per day is provided for 2 people which for us wasn't enough but most bars were able to refill the bottle for us. Some extra tips - the showers at the spa/gym are updated and usually empty and open for use; you can find fresh aloe plants by the theater bar if you need aloe for a burn; the main lobby coffee bar gets quite busy but the Luna lobby can make the same coffee; we had lunch at the beach restaurant every day to avoid repetition in the buffet and it was quite good; accessibility could be an issue here as there are a lot of stairs and the room we stayed in had an inordinately high tub to step in/out of for the shower.
