Awesome place and people

KILLA BEATS M (Havana, Cuba) on Apr 06, 2024

Amazing place, loved all the staff and service of the resort, made really good friends there like the pool keepers, they do an amazing job, they are Dairon, Juan Pablo, Javier, Damir and their boss El Titi, also the staff at the bar are awesome. I recommend this hotel to everyone who is visiting varadero, I'll be back soon for sure

Worst experience in Cuba having been to Cuba 20 times

Paul B on Apr 05, 2024

I have been travelling for over 40 years and I have never seen a Resort so run down. 1 elevator out of 5 that works and you have 4 floors and sometimes no elevator at all. The doors would not close properly so the wind would be howling all night through those doors. Bedbugs in the room and had to fight a whole day to change rooms then the bites stopped. The food was terrible even for Cuba which I am used to always cold food.No variety at all, always the same thing even at the beach restaurant.

Probably my worst trip yet….

Delores A (Hamilton, Canada) on Apr 03, 2024

The resort needs a lot of work. We were there from March 27 - April 3, 2024. The maids, wait staff, bar staff and pool staff were all very pleasant and helpful. The staff at the front desk were not very knowledgeable or helpful. Elevators are a big issue if you have trouble walking, they broke down daily and we had a few times where none of the 5 elevators were working, for the most part it was only 1 working at a time. We had no hot water 2 days and no A/C for one. They need to update the maps that are posted here and there throughout the resort as the information on them is outdated. They have no schedule for what is happening at the pool, which would be helpful to plan your day. It would also be nice if there was a posted schedule of the nightly shows as most of them are at the other resort. They also should update the menus for the a la carte restaurants so you know whether you want to eat there or not, as most of the stuff on the menu wasn’t offered at any of the restaurants we went to. I totally understand the food shortages they have right now but if I go to a restaurant because I the menu says I can have fish, I expect to have fish. On the upside it is a 10 minute walk to shopping in Varadero which was pretty nice…

Barcelo Solymar did not meet expectations.

zimbashka (Toronto, Canada) on Apr 01, 2024

I have stayed at Barcelo Solymar and room had issues. Hot water run very low pressure, so taking a shower was a hustle. Minibar, while advertised to be refilled daily, had only water and beer was not beyond second day. Talking to the front desk brings more confusion as stuff didn't know their website had it a a benefit o the summary page. While I know what to expect when traveling to Cuba with regard to food, this time aroun, food was beyond basic. No eggs, no milk, no coffee most of the time, no selection of fruit (pineapple, papaya were cut and even cooked to bring diversity). Special dinners at Ala Carte restorant was pretty much the same food as a buffet but sit down, and if I had known this, I would not have booked it. Elevators in disrepair from five in some distant past were only two working. By middle of the week, one remained running. On my last day, no elevators were running at all. Had to carry laguage from 4th floor using stairs.... With regard to beach it was amazing as always. Most stuff were pleasant, and it was sad to see how little they had available to provide any level of service. Would be nice if price was reflecting conditions that I have experienced this time around.

Bring Your own Food, Alcohol, Coffee and Towels.

The M (Winnipeg, Canada) on Apr 01, 2024

This was our first trip to Cuba. Have stayed in many all inclusive hotels in tropical areas and this was by far the worst. Started with only giving us one room key and then it never worked - almost every day we had to trek back to the front desk to get another key. We had requested to be booked in a block of rooms with our friends and instead were in all different locations. The pool, rooms and hotel itself are really run down. Spotted rats outside room on 3 different nights. We were only given 2 towels for our week stay. No face cloths or hand towels, or bath mat. Had to ask our maid every morning for water and we were leaving her "gifts every day." Not her fault at all, supply issues. I am not a picky eater but the food was disgusting and no one is supervising the stations. Watched a kid pick up vegetable rolls, eat the centers out and then put them back on the tray. Never saw cheese, bread, fish or potatoes ever. Never saw any desserts for the first 5 days, except for ice cream.... and the ice cream station was very unsanitary. Both my partner and I had major stomach issues. Not fun! In terms of alcohol, only cocktail you could occasionally get was a mojito. Coffee machine was broken most days and if it was working they wouldn't have milk and it would be cold. That all being said, the staff are very friendly and the beach is as beautiful as anywhere. The food shortages are real. I would never recommend this resort to anyone. :(.
