Sad to say, last time I'll be staying at Portofino - not worth the savings

Moira O on Oct 12, 2023

I've been staying at this hotel about every year since 2016. I've always known what it is - a budget hotel within easy walking distance of Disney. But over the years, the rooms have been getting dirtier and more worn - to the point where it's just not worth the low price anymore. This will be my last visit. The room (1113) smelled like sewage, the A/C was either on - and absolutely freezing cold - or it was off. It was miserable. They sent a technician to fix it twice and he said the units just need to be replaced - they are too old and either the cold is on or the heat is on - you can't adjust the temperature. I shivered under the covers with socks on every night. I got a Febreze plug in to mask the sewage smell. The carpet was so worn and dirty I wouldn't walk on it in bare feet. And I could hear EVERY SINGLE thing the family in the next room was saying and doing. Not muffled. Very clear words. It was like they were in the same room. So to mask the sound, I had to turn the (loud) A/C back on and froze. I was at the Parks all day and was too tired at night to ask for a room change. I have done that in previous years and found there wasn't much difference in the rooms anyway. I really wish they would fix the issues because it was a good thing for a few years there. The sewage smell was there on other visits and we did switch rooms. I've seen it mentioned in other reviews. It's amazing they just can't fix that! And put in even some basic upgrades. But I guess now they are major upgrades - new carpet, new A/C units, sound proofing in walls, replace beat up furniture. Sigh. Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

Great location..

Dugg0 (Shepparton, Australia) on Oct 09, 2023

Stayed here for 3 nights but due to time frames with two 15hr days at disney did not really explore the hotel that much. Great location with a 15 min walk to disneyland. Small shop at the front, tip, get your disney merch here, dont pay the huge prices at disney. 7/11 over the road and other eateries short distance. Rooms were good and comfortable, yes a little older but when your just using as a base for disney was well worth the location. If i was coming back to disney would stay here again no worries..

Not good at all

Charlene K on Oct 07, 2023

The pictures are deceptive. The carpets were so dirty, if you did not wear sandals the bottoms of your feet would turn brown. Balcony was not clean at all. No black out blinds in room. The bed sheets had a mystery brown stain on them. The room smelt musty and dirty. I am not a hotel snob, but this one was very disappointing. It was SO loud in our room, it sounded like there were elephants in the room beside and above us. We were awake at 5:30am because the walls were paper thin. Some noise in a hotel is completely normal, but this was unlike anything we ever experienced. It is sad to have to go home from your trip to get sleep. We complained about it and also the fact that we got the handicapped suite with a walk in shower when we needed a tub for the kids. They had nothing else available until the second last day and when we viewed that room it was no better, so we stayed in our current room. Also, on the last day after we checked out and were waiting for our shuttle to the airport the kids needed to use the bathroom. We waited for 10 mins at reception to ask for a keycard (you need a keycard to access the only public bathroom). Nobody was at reception and we needed to leave in 3 minutes to the airport. A housekeeper was in the hall and I asked if she could let us in to the washrooms and explained our plight. She was extremely rude and unhelpful, my kids were in tears because they needed to go so bad and she shrugged her shoulders and said not her issue. It left such a bad taste in my mouth, they don't mind taking your money but once checkout has arrived don't expect any assistance. So disappointed. Would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone.

GREAT SERVICE!

This was my first time staying at the Portofino in Anaheim and I wanted to share that the customer service deserves 10 stars. Cindy checked us in and she provided excellent service, she was friendly, kind and helpful. The hotel is a little outdated but Cindy's attitude made us feel like we were at the right hotel.

You get what you pay for

Marlene V (Santa Maria, California) on Aug 29, 2023

I booked this hotel based on the family suite room pictures, price, and it being a Disney Good neighbor hotel. I unfortunately didn't read reviews until after booking. With so many average (or worse reviews) I started to worry we made a bad choice and attempted to cancel, only to find out I had booked non-refundable. With no other option, we hoped for the best and arrived for our 2 night stay. Short story- you get what you pay for. The room was clean, but worn. It was "good enough", but we won't be staying again. The Details Pros: Check in was quick and friendly, we found parking between the two buildings. The room was spacious, the carpet clean, and it had a fridge and microwave. The location is convenient close enough to walk to Disney and plenty of places to eat. The 2 younger kids loved having their own bunk bed, and we loved the extra space and storage. The two separate sinks are a great idea. Cons: The furniture is worn. The mattresses cheap and rock hard, the pillows small and lumpy. Our oldest slept on the pull out sofa bed, and it was the worst. We know sofa beds aren't known for being the comfiest, but lately most hotels have decent memory foam. This was springy, old, and yellowed. There are two bathroom sinks, one in the shower/toilet area, one just outside the door. This is a great idea and helpful to have multiple people get ready, but the counter space is so small with very little space for toiletries. Most of our negative view of the hotel were manageable or tolerable, but the single reason we won't be returning is the lack of sound proofing. We could hear every creak, noise, toilet flush, even phone vibration of guests surrounding us. The pipes in the walls roared loudly. With people returning from the theme parks late, we had the worst nights of sleep. Everything traveled through the doors and walls. We tried to be mindful of this and be courteous as we left early ourselves and returned late the second night. I choose this hotel to get more space and a lower cost, but next time I think we will go back to one of the newer hotels.
