This place has everything you need in a beach vacation, with a proximity to Playa del Carmen that makes dinner in town a breeze. We've tried many other all-inclusives and have always been left wishing we just went back to the Quetzal...so now we do - every January, for two weeks.

We stayed here for 28 nights, the staff are exceptional the grounds amazing and the food tremendous. Ofelia on the beach is always keeping you hydrated ! Enrique, Mesmelilia, Allan, Patricio and Marco are all a credit to the hotel Grecia the manager has a great asset with each of them. In the buffet special mention to Gener, Victor and Jaime, the tip I’d give to you for the best Jet Ski on the beach is the 2 guys who have been there for over 25 years at the waters edge and not the guys who sit under a tent set back from the beach Have Fun !

We stayed at the Quetzal in late August, early September. It was oppressively hot during our visit. Our trip was made much less enjoyable due to the fact that it was too hot to even walk on the beach. We are Club members. The Club Lounge is in the Quetzal lobby and is very large and nice. Our check-in there went very smoothly. Our room was not ready yet, but we went and ate lunch, and it was ready when we were done. Hotel: There are two hotels here. They are side by side with a “jungle” in between. They share just about everything. There are separate lobbies and buffets, but everything is open to guests in both hotels. Both hotels are three stories, and have no elevators. There are many animals roaming freely – Agoutis, Coatimundis, monkeys, iguanas, peacocks. It is not hard to see monkeys every day if you look up in the trees when walking around. Don’t feed the animals though. Room: Our room faced the Riu next door, but the location by the pool was convenient for us. We don’t spend lots of time in our room anyway. We had a very nice room with a King bed and a sitting area with a sofa. There were plenty of cubbies in the closet for our clothes, although I would have liked some drawers. There was a small, stocked refrigerator. The bathroom was nice and updated. It has a blow dryer and a lighted, magnifying mirror. There is shampoo, conditioner and shower gel in the shower. There is a safe in the closet. We did hear a lot of music and noise at night from the Riu next door, which was annoying. Food: The food was just ok. The main buffet has a Mexican night on Friday, which was the best night. Every other night in the buffet is a real hodge podge of food. A majority of the dishes are not marked, so you have no idea what it is. Even dishes that you can recognize may be very spicy or have seafood or something else you don’t care to have. This could especially be problematic for those with food allergies. I hate to waste food, so there were many items I didn’t even try. I did get a piece of “mushroom” pizza at lunch and took a bite. It was heaped with anchovies. I nearly threw-up. Breakfast had a lot of choices, but many of the foods were not hot. We had lunch in one of the buffets by the pool. There are huge food palapas on either side of the pool and an outdoor snack area with burgers, hot dogs, fries and more. The food was the same day after day. One buffet had several kinds of burritos and the other had mostly salad and pizza. We ate at the steak house one night. My ribs were inedible they were so tough. My husband’s steak was not great and was not grilled, but cooked on a flat-top. The salad/appetizer area and dessert were very puny compared to other Iberostar steak houses we have been to. Club: The Club beach area is in front of the Tucan. It is large with sofas, plenty of Bali beds and loungers. There is a bar there and they bring snacks. However, it was just way too hot for us to stay there as there is very little shade in the whole Club area. Omar is the concierge, and he is a great guy with a very helping attitude. Augustin was the bartender, and he made some great drinks for us. Pool area/Loungers/Towels: There is one very large pool and one small adult-only pool with a swim-up bar. The main pool has lots of cove-like areas which makes it seem like several separate pools. There are very shallow areas and deep areas too. There is a hot-tub area towards the middle. After about 11 or so, the water in the pool was very warm and not refreshing, but wet. There are lots of loungers around the pool and on the beach. We are early risers, so finding a spot was not a problem. We never really noticed a time when all the loungers were in use, but in some of the areas you are like sardines in a can. They have a rule that if you are gone from your lounger for over 90 minutes, your belongings will be removed to free up the chairs. One day we were in the pool right in front of our loungers, and a notices was left on our chair to that effect. That being said, we never saw anyone’s stuff being moved. In fact, the palapa next to us had a wrap cover-up across the chairs for three days and we never saw anyone there. Also, one day we walked to get drinks and came back and one of our towels had been taken. The towel was done, but the towel clips were put back on the chair. When you check in, you get a towel card for each person in your party. Trade those in for towels and exchange your towels for clean ones when you need. Before you leave, exchange your towels for cards. If you don’t have them all, you will be charged for the towel. We will probably return, but it will not be at this time of year next time. Nothing but your room and the Club Lounge is air conditioned, and generally we are fine with that. But, keep that in mind in deciding what time of year to go.

We have been going to this hotel since 2001, and have seen many changes, many for the better! Yes, the rooms are basic and not flashy like some others, but the magic of this place is the location, the amazing grounds and the atmosphere! In seconds you go from being in a beautiful jungle to being around a huge free form pool and then a white sandy beach straight out of a magazine! Food is still great...elasticated pants are highly recommended if you're coming here! ;-) Animation team (Star friends) work long hours, and never fail to make you feel special during your stay...Funny memories of Rodrigo, Carlos, Flower, and Sharon. I like how the Japanese restaurant now just gives you a little of everything instead of asking which 2 meats etc...this made the whole experience much quicker, and more enjoyable, although I was sad to not see the banana dessert. We would both like to say thank you to Yohel, and to Reyna for the decorations and gifts in our room and the decorations and cake in the Italian for our 2nd wedding anniversary...lovely surprise! Love love love the new show 'The Elements Show' absolutely fantastic and so different!!! We also really enjoyed the new magician...more modern and up to date entertainment. Very sad that Thomas Cook ceased trading while we were there but at least we got our 2 weeks in paradise, and a plane home. Fingers crossed we'll find a way back next year. One minor complaint, please can we have more than one entertainment channel on the tv?
