4th time at Barcelo
beckeboo (Burlington, Canada) on Mar 24, 2024
Stayed at the Barcelo Tropical for a week April 2023. I had previously been to this chain of Barcelos on 3 other occaions. Things that were good: -the rooms were still well maintained and clean -a/c worked great in room and buffets -not a huge struggle to find chairs on the beach or pool -still lots to do for everyone, no lack of activities at this place -still nice snorkelling off the beach Things not so good: -the food I hate to say went downhill a bit. There's still a decent variety but I found everything at the buffet that should've been hot or at least warm was kinda cold. Breakfast was always good and we could normally find something at dinner we would want, but lunches at the beach grills were pretty sad -check in was horrendous. After a 3 hour drive from the airport we waited in a very hot short line for over an hour, front desk staff couldn't care less how long anyone waited -this hotel has become super popular with the spring breakers type. The property is big enough that during the day this isn't an issue but several nights in a row I had to call security as teenagers were screaming at each other through the hallways for hours. At some point we probably will go back to this property because it is nice but for now we might try something else.

I have never been to a resort with staff who don’t want to help you. First room key did not work so I dragged myself back across a rather large campus to reception. Explained that the maid let me in because my key did not work and I tried the phone and the phone is dead. Bathroom is not clean and room is smelly. Told sorry this is all we have here is a new key. Had to escalate to a manager that said I’ll give you another room. Guess that’s not all they have. Another trick across campus one key works one key doesn’t. Call to front desk told no one can bring a key with my luggage have to go back. Luggage takes hours to arrive. First day a complete waste. Food is awful. Three restaurants are all fully reserved but we can’t make reservations until all rooms check in oh and anyways there are no reservations left for the week. No sorry just this is the way it is. Old and dated . Offered to pay to upgrade and no availability. I’ll update after this week is up but I am not excited
Great bartenders/beach

This was our tenth time staying at the Barcelo. The employees are what keep us coming back. Of course, along with the beautiful grounds. And beach. We have three favorite bartenders that remember us every year and give us the best service ever. First and foremost is Jose at the tropical pool bar. He is the friendliest and most humble man I have ever met. And makes the best mango margaritas and dirty monkeys. And also bartenders Julia and never wrote the spelling down "Mickaela "? At the tropical pool bar made the pool so much fun and excellent shots were given by him. The sunrise is almost to get up early and see. And my husband snorkels all day long with the turtles. We overlook a lot of things, It does seem to have gone down.Hill a little bit as far as food but we could always find something. And the only other issue is the key card's not working quite often. And yes we know that to keep up by our cell phones. We have already start planning our trip for next year. Adios adios and gracias for another great trip

Barceló Tropical - Good Value

It’s a little over an hour from the Cancun Airport. If you arrive during the day your check in is likely to go a bit quicker than if you arrive late at night or early hours in the morning as their staff are minimal. Took over an hour to get checked in at 3:45am The resort is very large and generally does not feel crowded. The rooms in the Yucatán and sister building are dated however very clean. The AC is set pretty much at 18degrees and is cold all the time - however the rooms are damp almost always. The pools are large and good amount of space to enjoy. The buffets are consistent and have a good variety of food to choose from which is helpful for kids to self serve. The a la Carte restaurants are ok, food isn’t anything special although we never got to try the Mexican restaurant because we couldn’t get in - good luck trying to get a reservation. Would strongly suggest booking them well in advance of even arriving at the resort - plan it ahead of time for sure. The Pirates waterpark is great however it’s a bit ridiculous that kids between 13-17 have to wear a life jacket on the water slides / pool, body boarding and surf machines. Its mandatory. Even up to 12 yrs old have to wear arm floaties. No exceptions. Our kids are very good swimmers and wouldn’t have to do this at other water parks. Go Karts are super fun as well for $15usd and gets you 10mins on the track. Worth it to break up the day. The 2 escape rooms are very good if you are into that type of activity. Worth it as well. 18 hole mini putt is good, careful of the bugs / fly bites. The bowling is overpriced $15 per person usd for 1 round. If you want a beach chair or pool chair, you need to get up and get your beach towels (provided by the resort) and place them on your desired chairs well before 7am. Otherwise you’ll be looking forever for a spare chair here and there. Beach is very nice, we had high and rough surf most days so couldn’t do much in the way of water activities. You can rent a life jacket for free and some snorkel gear ($20 deposit) and go check out the fish / turtles off the dock .. good free activity, they will swim around you. Pool bars are good, might want to tip regularly to get served quicker. It works. The evening shows in the theatre are entertaining. Not top notch but they are worth sitting in to have a drink and relax. The gym is large with lots of equipment, complimentary towels and water. Very nice gym. If you have time to kill after checking out, they will let you use the resort until you have to leave later in the day - there are clean showers and locker rooms with towels to change as well. Overall, this resort is safe, good for families, generally good value but likely could get something a bit newer for the same price or maybe even less.
