Had A Great Time (Excluding The Food)

AerynL00 (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) on Apr 12, 2024

I booked this trip for myself and my fiance. We are two 20-somethings who average 2 international vacations a year and 3-4 shorter domestic getaways. We're seasoned vacationers (not travelers-- we go to relax rather than adventure.) If we sound like you then our review may be helpful in planning your trip to this resort! PROPERTY 3/5 Transparently, the layout of this hotel isn't my favorite. It isolates most of the guests from highly desired amenities like the beach and restaurants. I feel like the lobby is in a really strange place. Guests staying in standard (aka Deluxe) rooms have to cross a parking lot to get to the lobby, beach, and restaurants. This was my first time staying at a resort with this sort of layout and i probably wouldn't do it again. As far as the design of the property, they went for what was considered "modern" at the time of it being built. I could see it being viewed as very stunning and cutting edge back in 2014, but in 2024 it reads as cheugy or dated. Conversely, the sister hotels (Grand Riviera Princess and Sunset Princess) committed to a very earthy, Yucatan theme in design and decor. Its timeless and was breath taking upon first sight. Speaking of which-- guests at this hotel have complimentary access to the sister resorts. Taking the shuttle over to spend an afternoon is a great way to remind yourself of why you booked an adults only resort. In all seriousness, the sister resorts are quite nice but the service does seem to be much better at the PYP. ROOM: 4/5 We stayed in room 1001. This particular room is the first one that you pass when approaching the property by vehicle. We specifically requested a room in building 1 because we didn't want to hear the music from the main pool or witness debauchery at the swim up bar. It was a trek from the lobby, restaurants, and beach, but it was worth the sacrifice to not be near building 3 or the main pool. I would recommend this room to people who like peace, getting in their steps, and looking at wildlife. We saw so many animals from our patio and swim up! I would not recommend any rooms in building 1 to those with limited mobility. The room was clean but is definitely starting to show its age. The pool itself is very well maintained. People were cleaning and treating it constantly. Speaking of the pool, be very careful entering your room from the patio as the floors can get quite slick. It blows my mind that they don't provide any sort of floor mat for that area. Given the sheer amount of drinking that takes place in those swim outs, someone has definitely taken a slip or a tumble coming back into their room! Speaking of drinking, room 1001 may be away from the pool bar-- but you won't go thirsty! Wait staff come by constantly to take drink orders. My biggest complaint about this specific room was that there was a serious ant problem on the patio. There were 50-60 ants on our patio at any given time. We had to shake them out of our towels and swimsuits that we had left to dry before bringing them back into the room. We asked them to come by and spray it but to my knowledge, they never did. FOOD: 1.5/5 (Would be a 3/5 if it hadn't made us extremely sick) The food is fine. It is on par with the price you're paying (remember, this is not an upscale resort by any means.) Regardless, I have some serious concerns about how the food is being served at this hotel. Outside of popular items (eggs, bacon) nothing is kept to temperature in the buffet. I also received several room-temperature foods (particularly sides like mashed potatos and pasta) in the ala carte restaurants as well. My fiance and i got extremely sick on the third day of our trip. I attribute this sickness to foods being stored at incorrect temperatures. We had to treat this illness with Treda-- which cost a whopping $32 USD in the gift shop. The way that i see it is if they're going to serve food in a way that breeds foodbourne illness, the least they could do is offer the medicine at a non-inflated cost. One of the very strange things about this all inclusive (in comparison to others, atleast) is that they don't stock the room with any sort of crisps or light snacks. There seemed to be no in-between-- either you get a full meal or you don't eat. Contrary to others, i found the room service to be passable at this resort. It was comparable to the rest of the food at the resort except it was actually served at proper temperatures. We ended almost every night with it! SERVICE: 5/5 The people are who make this resort! The service we received at this resort was absolutely flawless. Shout out to Diego in the lobby! He does a great job at making guests feel welomed and cared about. The front desk workers and concierge were great, aswell! They were all extremely knowledgeable about the resort. I was very impressed by how many of the staff were multilingual. They could easily switch between languages at the blink of an eye and were very patient and complementary when my fiance attempted to use his limited Spanish. OVERALL: 4/5 Is this a true 5 star resort? Absolutely not. It's more like a 3 star resort. The price reflect this. We paid around $2200 for our vacation package, which included 5 nights at this resort + round trip airfare from PIT. Airfare alone would have totaled around $1000, so meaning the resort itself was around $1200 for 5 nights. This is $240 a night or $120 per person per night. I've paid a lot more for hotels offering a lot less. All things considered, this is a good value property. You'll have a great time if you watch what you eat and manage your expectations. This is a great starter resort for those who have never experience an all inclusive. Alternatively, it's also a great choice if you just want to get away for the sake of getting away.

Definitely not 5 star

545sm (Toronto, Canada) on Apr 09, 2024

This resort is a 4 star at best. Everything was just fine. 5 star resorts don’t let their property maintenance get this bad. Upgraded to a hot tub room which I would never even want to sit in it was so dirty and falling apart. Torn plastic sheets on the bed made me feel like a toddler again, musty smells, holes in walls, floors stained, couch falling apart. Housekeeping was poor. When you book a 5 star hotel you expect 5 star service. No greetings when walking by staff, waiters were blah. Like I said everything was just fine. Just wished I’d paid “fine” prices.

3.5 Star Dressed as a 5

We stayed in a swimout room in the 4000 Block. CHECK-IN: Was quick and easy. A welcome drink was provided. There is a nice little bar in the lobby for drinks or coffee. Service at this bar was fast with good quality drinks but we found it to be not the cleanest at times. ROOM: The room has a nice layout but is becoming a bit run down. The floors were beautiful at one time but are now scraped and marked up. Our couch was falling apart. The bed was fine and was super comfortable. Pillows were not great but we managed. The shower area was great. Two rain showers and a hand sprayer in a large shower area separated from the double sinks. Be careful in the shower, ours didn't drain well and with two of us showering at once, we had the water flowing outside the shower. The tub was not jetted and was not very nice. The AC was locked at 22 degrees but this worked well for us and we generally like a cooler room. No issues with condensation or smell. The toilet was not good. Basically, we could not flush toilet paper down the toilet. Poor maintenance with quick fixes where this is concerned. HOUSEKEEPING/FRIDGE: Our cleaning lady was outstanding! She always replenished toiletries and made sure our fridge was well stocked. She went above and beyond to do what she could. We always had plenty of towels and she replaced our pool towels pretty much daily. PATIO/SWIM OUT: Have seen better - it was just ok. The concrete was rough and the design of the patio attracts ants and dirt. The area was in ill repair overall. The plastic furniture was ok but not to the standard of furniture that we are used to. The actual swim out pool area was clean and really great! It was our favorite place to be. Great bar service right to our patio. Our waitress worked very hard and therefore we tipped her well. BEACH: We give it 4/10 for these reasons: Beach loungers were dirty, cups laying around, there was an umbrella table tipped from the day before. We did not stay long so I can't comment on walking into the ocean. We have been to lots of resorts and this beach was not great. We have stayed at the Grand Sunset Princess next door and the beach seemed to be well maintained when we were there but that was a few years ago. The smell is not nice. A combination of the seaweed and the mangroves made for a bad combination. RESTAURANTS: Buffet had great service and the selection was adequate. Food was usually in good supply and was a good temperature. Italian restaurant was our favorite! Lots to choose from, good atmosphere. The Steak house was good as well. Aroma international was not great for us. Portion sizes were weird and not many choices for us. The Asian grill was good. Not a great show for us compared to others we have been at but the food tasted great. Room service was fast and reliable but the menu options are very limited. SPA: Had a great massage! I booked through the man sitting at the table outside the buffett restaurant. He offered the discount and it was not within the first 24 hours like they advertise. You can get the discount any time. I sent him a message in WhatsApp and he arranged a massage within the hour for me. CHARLIES MASSAGE ON BEACH: I didn't go but I would have as I heard good things. They approached us on the beach. Just ask for the discount - I think it was $40 US for 1 hour. It would be about a 5-10 min walk down the beach towards the Grand Sunset Princess beach area. DRINKS: Great for alcohol content! They don't cheap out on that. The quality of drinks was a bit disappointing. We found a lot of them were just alcohol slurpies with just flavors and ice. We have had better drinks at resorts with actual fruit blended in. Mojitos were good, Caesars were great! Overall the service for drinks was very good. SUMMARY: Overall, the resort was fine. Good points and bad. We paid way more for this resort than it was worth. Platanum Yucatan is a 3.5 star pretending to be a 5 star. We were expecting a higher quality of resort. We tip very well but we also expect a higher standard than what we got over all. The staff is definitely an asset!!! Rooms 3.5/5 Swimout 3/5 Housekeeping 5/5 Bar Service/Quality 4/5 Restaurants 4/5 Spa 4/5 Beach 2/5 Room Service 3/5 Checkin/out 5/5

Nice, quiet adults only vacation

Alex S (New York City, New York) on Apr 04, 2024

Reading a lot of negative reviews, I’d like to share our experience. We have been staying in room 4223 on December 10- 17, 2023 and it was an excellent experience as we’ve been traveling all around Caribbean for the last 30 years. Reception: nice and easy, thanks to a very friendly, polite Lina, explained locations, offered upgrade to room 4223 (purchased through Orbitz/Expedia) even we did not ask, recommended restaurants. Check out was handled by her as well, nice again. Unfortunately, it was impossible to have a later check out (optional with Expedia/Orbitz) as hotel was fully booked. Room: spotless, everything was working fine, all supplies have been replaced daily, comfortable bed. One day jacuzzi stopped working at 8 pm. going to dinner we’ve mentioned this to the concierge not expecting repair till next day, at least. Came back at 9:30 pm – jacuzzi was working fine. Amazing. Grounds: nice, clean, very well maintained. We’re from New York and very appreciated quiet time there. No loud music. Beach: almost does not exists, washed out by storms. About 10 ft wide with very few beach beds, lots of racoons and similar animals looking for food as jungle between the beach and hotel. No swim as sharp huge rocks are everywhere. Alternative - walk to the next 2 huge sisters hotels (Grand Riviera Princess and Grand Sunset Princess) where beach is small for thousands of guests, overcrowded and beach beds are next to each other. A lot of rocks there as well, ocean is shallow, but swim is possible, just be careful and make sure you can see the bottom. Restaurants: all restaurants very good, quality, service, cleanliness is well above average. We’ve been impressed by the buffet (generally neglected)- one of the best we’ve ever seen. Great selection of food, cooked nice, nothing over- or undercooked. Very special thanks to chefs Yazmin, Ivette, chefs in black aprons – all of them made this buffet the best. Very appreciate their efforts and commitments to make all visitors happy. Bars: all very good, work hard to make line moving fast. Premium alcohol was available (one review from March stays that premium is gone, we’ll see it in May). Entertainment: in the theater starts at 10 pm, good. Also liked live music every evening by bar Plaza. Concierge: excellent service by all on duty, recommendations to visit sisters’ hotels for shows, booking for restaurants there. Overall: excellent adults only hotel, nice, quiet, outstanding service, food, restaurants, does not feel crowded. When planning our next vacation there were no doubts - We’re going back to this hotel again on May 5th, hope to have the same room (will ask) and post a comparison review after that.
