I had planned on booking a condo for my 22yr old daughter and her 2 cousins for Spring Break. But then I heard from a neighbor of mine who had just returned from the Kanaloa at Kona who said they had a disturbing experience there. Apparently, the guy who was the head of maintenance had approached and made inappropriate comments to her 20 yr old daughter on 2 different occasions. When her husband mentioned something about this to one of the longtime residents there (an older Canadian man) he just laughed it off. What?!? I decided against booking at the Kanaloa. To be honest, I debated about posting about this for several weeks, but after talking with my daughter, we felt we had an obligation to warn other families and women about this guy and this property.

    Lovely resort

We have stayed here twice. The condos are big & most of them updated. We feel at home here. Ocean & golf course views, 3 pools, tennis courts, ping pong. No resturant/bar, but its a friendly, quiet place.

These are private condos managed by Outrigger.... beware!

So, like you, I saw the photos of the unit I chose on Kanaloa at Kona by Outrigger. I made reservations for a great holiday. Upon arrival, you check in at another complex near Kona, not Keahou bay where this is located. You drive to the complex and there is a lockbox. You open the unit and find a 1980s era decorated unit with dirty furniture, old appliances, sliding doors that barely work, ground floor (even though the pictures show a top floor unit). No, the inside looks nothing like what you selected when you clicked the book button. They then refuse to refund your money because you agree to a cancel prior to 60 days for a refund. So, if you open the door and think, YUKKY, you are still stuck to 2 nights charge and your Mastercharge credit card company will not back you and only support the misleading merchant. Buyer beware! Nowhere does Outrigger indicate on their website that they are a property manager for privately owned condo units.

The condo is large and spacious with high ceilings, lots of sun light and amazing views. Right on the rugged rocky waterfront with great views from some of the units and the main pool. There were 5 of us that stayed here and there was lots of room for everyone. I guess it depends on the condo unit you get-we booked through Air B & B so we actually got to see the unit ahead of time. The grounds are very well kept, great pools with views of the ocean and the overall feel of the property is good-very quiet and private. The only issues really are the lack of info at check in-no mention of the A/C-asking if you want it or mentioning how to use it and also no mid week cleaning service, restocking of toilet paper, dish soap or removal of garbage etc. The location however was great as you are 5 minutes away from one of the best snorkel areas and 3 minutes from a supermarket and shops. We would definitely stay here again.

The good stuff first: ocean view units, Keauhou area, and the 2 bd/2 ba unit is very large. Ocean view pool is nice. We talked with maintenance, security and receptionist staff who were all pleasant and approachable. Our unit had excellent WiFi and nice televisions with great cable channel options. Minuses: given a map that highlighted area on where to park but it was incorrect) extra air conditioning fee (read other reviews) some seem to offer it as extra fee, but we were not even offered the option; light maintenance needed in unit (broken blinds in master bedroom which don’t close so morning sunlight will wake you); ants (we live in Hawai’i so we’re used to pests) were abundant because I don’t think they have a good pest control maintenance; kitchen knives need sharpening; floors need serious cleaning and mopping, not just a broom; and slow check-in service. I watched another guest complain about the extra effort to get a/c and the additional fee for a/c. Based on reviews and staff response to this guest, this is an ongoing customer service issue that management seems to ignore. Given the many places we can stay in Kona, there is no reason to ever want to return to this property or any operated by Castle. This is the second Castle property we have stayed at in Kona. First experience was worse, but this confirms that I will avoid Castle properties from now on.
