    Fantastic Girls Get Away

    Mother/Daughter get away was fantastic. We were there mid-January. A quick shower on a couple of days, but nothing to slow us down. Beautiful resort. Every thing on the grounds is beautiful, green, and well manicured. The only thing missing is more flowers to add color. We would definitely come back again.

    Great resort with great service - Irene took great care of us and we will definitely be back! Rooms were clean, food was good (a la cartes were fabulous) and the beach was beautiful! Can’t wait to come back!

    Paid to be Premium level but the only perk was ocean view room. Private check in & out is a nightmare. Check in took hour & a half because only 2 computers. Check out took 45 minutes and they claimed they didn't charge us for our transportation to/from airport so required payment again. Requested king bed 4 months ago but still got double beds & only 2nd floor when top floor was also requested. Beds & pillows were not comfortable. Resort buffet food is generic but good variety. Italian, Steak house & Kyoto tepenyaki were great at night. No alcohol before 11 a.m. Be ready for lots of walking as nothing is close.

    Came here for New Years and had a really good time. The food was very good at the buffet restaurant for New Years. Lobster, crab, king crab, steak, they had it all. Our room was really comfortable and cleaned everyday. Bar fridge was always stocked. Make sure to leave the staff a tip for good service for the rooms and one for the mini bar. Beach was nice, pools were nice and specialty restaurants were good as well. Alcohol is not served till 12pm. My only complaint is the check in, check out was ridiculously long. It was so bad the first night, our friends driver took them to the Tropical and had them checked in there because there was nobody around. Other than that, we got back together next day and all was good.

    Now that the honeymoon is over I thought I’d write a review of our stay at the Barceló Maya Grand Resort. Arrived mid-day on 01/11/20, booked a premium oceanfront view at the Caribe. Which turns out wasn’t the case. We were moved to the Beach, no worries we were just super excited to start our honeymoon. Check in was very smooth, no wait for us, loved the premium lounge. I was assured by our travel agent prior to our departure that the resort was notified it was our honeymoon and my wife’s birthday to boot. Cannot remember the woman’s name who checked us in but she was quite pleasant (although she did appear to be in training) and stated they were unaware of our honeymoon and birthday, oh well. She said that she would plan a special breakfast surprise in the morning (which turned out to be a standard room service breakfast smh). Booked our al cartes for the week and we were off to our room. Hell of a walk to the room lol. My wife has some mobility issues and has a tough time with stairs. Was very disappointed that the only elevators in our building were smack dab in the middle of the building, and they reeked of axle grease. Not really going to complain about my wife’s mobility issue because the weather there eased her pain a great deal and we were able to walk the entire beach with minimal discomfort. Which was the best part of our trip!! (But the elevator issue is still on my mind for the stairs really bothered her). Made it to the room 2209 both attempted to swipe our bracelets to open the door (fantastic idea btw) to no avail, neither bracelet appeared to be activated. Waited for about 15 minutes to see if the bell boy would arrive with our luggage… nope. Had my wife stay back so I could make the trek back to the lobby. I had to wait for another group to be checked in before they would even look my way. Was kinda pissed off and I’m sure it showed, but I kept my cool and they corrected my bracelet issue. Back to the room (maid let my wife in). Pros on the room: was super nice, bed was sooo comfortable and was very clean. Cons: thought being premium and spending all that extra money that there’d be at least a bottle of tequila or something in the room, nope. The minibar was cool not cold, made the cheap beer hard to stomach lol. The sliding door out to the balcony felt as if it was 700 lbs. I had to let my wife in and out nearly every time (she’s a tiny little thing). I’m a big guy, 6’4” and in pretty good physical shape strength wise and had everything I could do to open and close it. 5 out of the 8 days we had to track down a maid new for wash cloths and towels because they’d take the used ones and wouldn’t replace them. Once I could see being a mistake, but 2 thirds of the time we were there? The food was good, not great, but pleasant and a large variety on the buffet. Didn’t eat any fresh fruits or uncooked vegetable due to the fear of getting ill, The ala cartes were just ok. Dress code for males is stupid and redundant. Glad I packed nice clothes (enter sarcasm) just to find other men in t shirts, jeans and sneakers. If you’re going to let people in like that, then let us in with nice shorts and sandals. Drinks were pretty good, bar service was lacking at a few of the bars. One bar in general not really sure which one, think it was the Caribe pool bar. Waited for 20 minutes for a drink and didn’t even get one look our way, they just continued to serve folks that would just walk up around us. Left there irritated, made it to the next pool bar and was promptly served. Red flag or not, we were in the ocean daily!!! And the turtles, absolutely amazing!!! Tried, canceling a reservation at one of the Palace restaurants, the day before the reservation and we were told we couldn’t, so that was a waste of 40 dollars cause we just didn’t show. A few days before my wife’s birthday I wanted to surprise her. So I arraigned a romantic dinner on the beach. Was very expensive, but she’s worth it. Was told it would be on the beach in front of our building by the buffet. Day before her birthday, I received a text stating it was now going to be in front of the Mariachi buffet. No worries. Day of my wife’s birthday e spent the day swimming with the turtles and relaxing on the beach. Headed back to the room to get ready for her surprise. Casually strolled down the beach to where the dinner was to take place. We were a half hour early and there was no one in sight on the beach, strange I thought. Sat at the pool bar, ordered a drink and my phone rang. Lady on the other end stated there was a “mistake” and the person in charge of our dinner, never received the reservation. I was in total disbelief. As I sat there staring at my wife’s beautiful smile, I was being repeatedly “we’re so sorry” They asked if I wanted to set it up for the next night, but today, my wife’s birthday, was our last full day before heading back home. I hung up the phone and explained what I had planned, and they “made a mistake.” My wife was a great sport and without missing a beat, said this was still the best birthday ever. Deep down, I know she was hurt, and I was steaming mad. Check out was a breeze, less than 15 minutes. Overall, would we return? Probably, everything I complained about was petty (except the beach dinner) and we’re very easy to please. So yeah, we’d come back, but with lower expectations. The unsung heroes, are the behind the scenes workers. The grounds crew, what a wonderful job they do. It’s refreshing seeing workers taking great pride in what they do, even wearing what they wear. I’d be sweating my *** off. My hats off to them!!! On a side note, our shower leaked like a sieve into the toilet area. Didn’t say anything to try and get moved. Didn’t want to risk being put somewhere we didn’t want to be which had already been done.
