Our family stayed for 10 days, this is our 3rd time back at this gorgeous hotel. The food, the pools, the nannys, the spa, the beach!! It’s all superb in many ways. We had the fortunate to have Carolina Herrera as our personal concierge and she took care of us in every and all aspects! With a smile on her face she was always there for us, making sure every day was perfect and helping us enjoy all the virtues of this magnificent hotel/experience!

With four nights to sink into the spirit of Grand Velas Riviera Maya, I finally had a chance to get what this resort is all about. Here are my tips, if your budget will allow...Book a Grand Class room if you are traveling without children. For Grand Class, request a ground floor suite with Plunge Pool. If you are traveling with children, book a higher floor in the Ambassador Section. If your budget won't allow Ambassador with children, check out the Zen section, slated to re-open in November. While Zen is a little inconvenient for visiting the beach, it's got an amazing pool and a cool jungle vibe. Close to two special restaurants and the SPA. (Do plan to visit the spa for one service and get the hydro-therapy ritual complimentary with that.) Rooms were everything you would expect. Well thought out and huge. Super comfortable, perfect service every day. Food in the premiere restaurants was really good, and I can say the food and wine selection of included items is the best at any all-inclusive on the Riviera Maya. Azul (the all day buffet restaurant) was a little disappointing and felt sterile, especially during COVID precautions, so check it out, but relay more on poolside grills, poolside food service from your waiter, and hopefully soon, the re-opened Bistro in the Adult section. Make sure to make all of your dining reservations in advance of your arrival. Very important! Don't let me forget the Room Service. This is where this hotel really felt 5 star. We had room service every morning for Breakfast, and the selection was huge, and the food always delivered piping hot. Great coffee too! Last but not least, the Grand Class section of the hotel gets you your own personal concierge. This is a real luxury, in that you can text your concierge with any questions, requests, etc. and they will answer or provide you with what you need. Our concierge, Carolina, was so fun and efficient. COVID protection is as good as it gets...Test to re-enter the United States is free and they set it all up.... If you are looking for the best all-inclusive on the Riviera Maya, this is it.

Our family celebration was prevented by covid. Back next year. But the whole team from luis Ochoa in reservations our butler Carolina William Maria Edgar and the team at bistrot made for a spectacular stay. Wonderful location. Beautiful vues from grande classe rooms and a visiting coatimundi. World class and with nothing more to pay good value for money. Well done.

Not the family friendly vacation I envisioned

I just spent an 8 day vacation in Mexico with my husband and 5-year-old son. We spent 4 days at the Grand Velas and 4 days at the Andaz. I originally booked the Fairmont but when I found out about the extensive renovations, I bailed and switched to the Andaz. I will review the Andaz separately. 1. Room- We originally booked an ambassador pool room and got upgraded to a grand class room. It was a huge, gleaming room with luxurious finishes and a giant bathroom, but overall generic. The giant veranda and oceanfront view were beautiful. The plunge pool was perfectly warm. The rollaway bed was already there when we arrived and appeared comfy. The beds were nice but the pillows were too squishy. I love the l’occitane products although not eco friendly with single use plastic containers. The next door Mayakoba hotels have attempted to minimize the use of single use toiletries. The minibar was stocked with many guilty yummies and a variety of alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks and restocked every day. 2. Property- I felt very safe with COVID precautions and how empty and spread out the property was. It is large but easy to navigate. It was a 5 min walk from our Grand Class room to the Ambassador pool. It was a quick shuttle ride to the Zen spa. Everything is well maintained and beautiful. It was very manicured as opposed the the more jungle feel of the Andaz. I imagine the Zen area has a more jungle feel as well. The swimming pool is gigantic and beautiful but cold. There is a very shallow part of the pool that is slightly warmer. The beach is pretty and the massive amounts of seaweed that wash up overnight is cleaned up by about 9 or 10 AM. 3. Service- The service is excellent. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. It was not quite the caliber as the Rosewood but still exemplary. There is a service charge included for everything however we chose to leave an extra tip for everyone in pesos. I didn’t feel pressure to do this but I felt it was deserved. Our concierge Carolina was awesome. She was easy to reach and responded quickly. She accommodated all requests with enthusiasm and without hesitation. 4. Family friendly- my biggest disappointment and I will be the lone voice of dissent among the entire internet. The restaurants are not kid friendly. There are no kids menus. On the first night we ate at the “family-friendly” Frida. My anxiety shot through the roof when I noticed all the tables covered with white table cloths and covered in delicate stemware and flatware. My son could have easily created a disaster with a small yank of the tablecloth. We resorted to giving him the iPad for dinner. I didn’t use the kids club for dinner (reason forthcoming) but others did. This dinner was so stressful that we canceled another dinner reservation to order room service instead. The kids club was a disappointment. The first time we tried to introduce the club to my son the only thing the employee said was “do you like Nintendo switch?” No introduction, no interacting or warming up to him. We played switch as a family for a little while but no employee came over to befriend my son the entire time. There were no other children there so there should have been plenty of time for a staff person to play with my son. Sadly, my son completely rejected our attempts to leave him there that day so that we could enjoy some time as a couple. The next day, I dropped my son off to workout. About one hour later, the staff called me to tell me that my son wanted to leave. I don’t mind that they called. It’s just disappointing they couldn’t manage to keep him entertained for more than an hour. Thankfully we had a babysitter for our spa visit and Cocina de Autor dinner or those would have surely been ruined. I would say that unless your child is independent or has friends/siblings there, the kids club is not going to be a reliable child care option. On the other hand, our babysitter was very sweet and trustworthy. Another non-family friendly feature- There are no real suites. An option is to book a side by side room but I couldn’t stomach the idea of paying almost double the high room rate just for a 5-year-old. Lastly the pool was too cold for my taste and there are no hot tubs (at least at the ambassador pool). This might be trivial to some in April but when there is nothing to do at 10 AM for your child and this is before the sun really blazes and the cool ocean breeze is chilling, you will want a little warmth in the water. My son lamented how bored he was multiple times. All in all- I was very much ready to move on to the Andaz when our 4 day trip came to a close. I will not be bringing my son back to the GV anytime soon. 5. Food- We enjoyed almost everything. Cocina de Autor was marvelous. The tasting menu and paired drinks were so delicious. My husband has a tree nut allergy. Not only did they omit tree nuts, they designed new dishes for him. This dinner was one of the highlights of our trip. Frida was also tasty except the grilled octopus. The presentation and texture were a miss for me. The room service was outstanding. They have a wonderful bakery and all of the pastries and breads were superb. We had room service for every breakfast and one dinner. It always arrived in a timely fashion, well presented, with many accompaniments. It was nice to eat in the peace of our room on the beautiful veranda and let my son be a kid instead of glued to his iPad. On a similar note, I wish more of the dinner restaurants had outdoor seating. The only one I am aware of is Azul. 6. Spa- DIVINE. My hot stone massage was amazing and I felt like I was on another planet. My husband loved his draining massage. The hydrotherapy circuit was really fun too. I went through twice during my stay. One time prior to our treatments and another time because it was included in our rate. I believe one circuit is included for all guests. The GV spa beats the Rosewood spa except the rosewood spa is open to all guests for unlimited use even without booked services. Also I enjoyed the guided experience of the hydrotherapy the first time but it would have been nice to use all the facilities freely without a guide. The Rosewood has attendants but they let you go with your own flow. Treatments are superior at GV. 7. Areas for improvement- Again, the kids club staff needs to be retrained. They should ideally strive to become friends with children instead of just supervising. Also, it would have been nice to have our plunge pool cleaned during our stay. It became murky and collected debris during our 4 days. The Andaz pool sparkled from beginning to end. Summary- For adults looking for relaxing all inclusive luxury in a classic setting with great food, GV fits the bill. For families with a single young child I would pass and stay at the Andaz. For over the top 5 star luxury, the best possible service and more of a unique experience, I recommend the Rosewood.

I carefully reviewed 5 star- hotels in Cancun and Cabo and am so glad we booked the Grand Velas. The hardworking staff make this place amazing and are always working to please guests. The grounds are impeccable and although there was some construction they do a great job minimizing noise and inconvenience to guests. We never saw a hotel employee not wearing a mask, including the seaweed team working tirelessly in the endless war against seaweed in the hot sun and who have no contact with guests. The food was also incredible, and the chefs at Frida and Luca prepared some of the best dishes we’ve had in years. We visited Wed-Saturday and pretty much had the place to ourselves on Wednesday and Thursday. Sometimes it felt like there were 5 employees to one guest. Getting a covid test was seamless. The spa is not to be missed— it’s top class and the water ceremony was fun too. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that tip was included in the listed spa price. And ladies save space in your suitcases and leave your hair dryers at home bc theirs are very powerful. A special shout out to Jaime, our favorite waiter; Santiago, Daniel, Karen, Felix and Pedro for their great service and making this a memorable trip.
