I have to tell you, this hotel is just perfect. The food is great, the pool is nice, and the garden is magical. Maroma is the nicest hotel I have ever stayed. Our room was beautiful and specious, with a huge bed and massage bath. The staff is extremly friendly and kind, and not because of the tip. During our stay I had a small medical problem, but the hotel's doctor, Maria was next to me in 15 minutes. She was so kind, and calm. I cannot be more grateful. Thank you!

    Comparable to Secrets Akumal

My wife and I traveled with four friends to Secrets Maroma Beach at the beginning of February. We had booked the trip last September knowing it would be a great escape from a typical Iowa winter - and it was! Since my wife and I had stayed seven days at Secrets Akumal (see my separate review for Akumal) just two months earlier, it was a great chance to compare the resorts. We had met a travel agent at Secrets Akumal who had said both resorts were among her favorites and were highly similar. This proved to be the case for us too. Our trip from the Cancun airport to the resort took approximately 30 minutes, which is half the time as the trip to Akumal. Both were direct transfer, which in our minds is the only way to go. As with Akumal, the lobby is open air and not overly pretentious. Check-in went quite quickly and the usual Secrets Vacation Club sales pitch from one of the post-check-in staff proved to be relatively brief and painless - as it also was at Akumal. Having stayed at Secrets resorts in the past, we knew what to expect and so we politely told the sales rep up front that we were not interested in the breakfast, spa credits, and property tour. Since it was well before 3pm, our rooms were not ready, so we left our luggage with the lobby staff and grabbed lunch at the World Cafe (buffet restaurant). We then toured the grounds, pool area, and beach. As people have advised in the past, doing a quick switch to shorts, sandals, and a short-sleeved shirt soon after getting off the plane is highly advisable no matter how early or late you land. Our tour of the resort revealed it to be similar in size and appearance to Secrets Akumal. Both have beautifully landscaped grounds, which are well-maintained. The pools, outdoor furniture, bar areas, and beach all proved to be well cared for and showing no sign of wear/tear or need of refurbishing or replacement. Our rooms were ready by 3 and they proved to be very similar to our room at Akumal. We were in Building 21 (not Preferred Club), which is located close to the restaurants, theater, lobby bar, CoCo Cafe, and sports bar. The main pool was only a two minute walk and the beach a further minute beyond. I cannot compare Preferred Club versus regular rooms since we have never opted for the Preferred Club in our stays at Secrets' resorts. Over the following seven days, my wife and I found Secrets Maroma Beach to be very similar to Secrets Akumal: beautiful grounds, pools, buildings; excellent staff; virtually identical restaurants, menus, food quality; and, very good (and sometimes the same) entertainment. Our favorite restaurants at Maroma Beach were Portofino, El Patio, and Sea Side. At Akumal, the standout was Bordeaux (and Cecilio, its incomparable waiter!). Our favorite shows at both resorts were the Jersey Boys, the Beatles show, and the Rock and Roll show. In addition, the Tenors show at Akumal was excellent. Noteworthy staff at Maroma Beach were bartenders Carlos, Gonzalo, and Elisandro. Our housekeeper, Rocio, did a consistently excellent job. And our concierge, Maili, was a tireless helper with a ready smile and working well before and after her posted hours. I would also be remiss if I failed to give a shoutout to Ivan, the do everything and anything assistant at the main pool. Speaking of the main pool, we were pleasantly surprised by its warm water. Our previous experiences at other resorts December through February have been pools with water so cool that no one sat at the swim-up bar. Definitely not the case at Maroma Beach. I do not recall the main pool at Akumal being that close to air temp in December. Also, we had very few problems finding six lounge chairs together at the main pool. We did need Ivan's help though a few times, especially finding us an additional umbrella or two. Regarding the beach, it was spacious, with plenty of palapas, lounge chairs, and beach activities. Yes, the seaweed rolled in continuously. However, the staff worked non-stop to rake it up. This is a problem all along the coast, certainly not unique to Maroma Beach, Akumal Bay, Puerto Adventuras, etc. Beach volleyball proved to be very popular, and there was quite a bit of windsurfing going on next door (three minute walk to the south). We found Maroma's beach area and amenities to be highly similar to Akumal's in terms of space, palapas, and access to the beach bar, grill, and restrooms. The one major difference pertains to snorkeling. At Akumal, I was able to see turtles, rays, colorful fan coral, and beautiful reef fish by merely strolling into the water from my Secrets beach palapa with my snorkel gear. That is the "deal-maker" for me! Otherwise, I don't feel you can go wrong with your selection of either resort.

Exceptional accommodations and pool side food very good. Only criticism would be the gym was not appealing and very hot. The French, Italian and Sushi restaurants are ok, but not exceptional if you are used to frequenting higher end establishments

"Welcome Home" is their motto, and you can feel it as soon as you step foot at the resort. Everyone seems genuine and happy to see you. The grounds are immaculate and the buildings and rooms are upgraded and beautiful. The beach was beautiful and not crowded at all. We visited during spring break and didn't know what to expect. There were several days with lots of empty beach chairs - we never had a problem finding a spot with a great view. The beach servers and quick with drinks. There is a lot of seaweed - so we didn't swim, but I could relax and watch the waves roll in all day! The only things we didn't love: the up-selling (fancy wines, timeshare, etc) and the number of phone calls we got in our room (more than I get at home!). Otherwise, this was the most relaxing 5 days I've had in years!
