We stayed here with our two adult sons for 10 days from 31st October on a Virgin holiday after having 4 nights in Havana. Check in was straightforward. We were offered an upgrade from the standard room to a superior room (which we had read about) on the fourth (top) floor at the 50% discount rate of 10CUC pppn. We accepted this at 400CUC total. On the upside, we were allocated a twin room and a junior suite. This suited us perfectly as our autistic son came in with us in the suite and our other son had a room to himself. On the downside, the minibars were empty. On questioning this we were told they were not included as the rooms were given at the discounted rate! After some confrontation they agreed to fill the minibars daily - bit like buying a car at a discount and finding you don't get any wheels! Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served in the same buffet restaurant. We found the food to be plentiful, always a good choice, mostly cold and typically Spanish, with little difference between the lunch and dinner offer. There are 5 a la carte restaurants with no restriction on the number of visits, needing two nights notice. These are essential if you want to avoid the monotony of the buffets. They are not all open every day. We liked the Latino and the Chinese restaurants with good menus and good service, but afraid to say that the Tex Mex was a bit of a 'Fawlty Towers' experience - the appetiser was onion rings, but they did not have any, our chosen starter was potato wedges, but what came was a plate of 'Smash' but without butter or milk, and a tray of dips, etc. Waiters and servers in all locations were generally very pleasant and, particularly in the bars, welcomed tips. The lady in the ice cream hut was absolutely great with our family - should get 'employee of the month'! Our junior suite (4047) was huge (like two double rooms put together), and always kept spotlessly clean. Electrical sockets were a mix of US flat two pin, mostly 110v with one at 220v, and European two round pin. A kettle and coffee supplies was provided. A huge free safety deposit box was in the wardrobe, and the storage facilities were pretty reasonable. Wifi is atailable in the lobby louge and at the pool bar. A wifi card was 1CUC for an hour access. The hotel has a currency exchange facility at a good rate with no commission. The only place within reasonable walking distance is the Plaza America shopping centre (shops and bars, Jim, but not as we know it!) and the hotel runs a coutesy land train there every half hour during the day. There were quite a lot of adult activities going on during the day and we joined in a lot of them. We thought the evening shows were excellent and professional in their presentation. There was no problem getting a sunbed at the pool or at the beach. The beach was great, with no 'lloky looky' men, and a warm sea to play in. Nothing to do with the hotel, but if you need to get back to Havana airport for your return trip, you might want to consider a private transfer as our return was horrendous. The pick up coach was 35 minutes late, took three hours, we got through customs and security just after 3.30pm with our flight due to start boarding at 3.50pm. Do not rely on changing CUCs back at the airport.

We spent 5 nights at Sol Palmeras as part of our 2 week trip to Cuba. After travelling around and staying in Casas, arriving at this all inclusive resort was a bit of a shock to the system. Overall pros of our stay: outstanding customer service, clean room, beautiful beach, enjoyable BBQ lunch on offer in pool area, good food in restaurants (if you can get booked in), we also highly recommend the snorkeling trip organised through the hotel Cons of our stay: dated hotel in general, one of the pools was closed during our stay which limited us to one pool, tacky entertainment (sorry not our kind of thing!), poor quality buffet for dinner if you weren't able to book into a restaurant at the resort. In hindsight, if we were to go back to Varadero we would probably try and find a Casa perhaps in Varadero Town - near restaurants and shops etc. as this would suit us better If you are looking for an all inclusive resort break where you are happy to not leave the resort for a week / 2 weeks - then Sol Palmeras could be a good option... just make sure you reserve tables in the restaurants for dinner to avoid the buffet!

Came here with my spouse for our anniversary. First time to veradero. Not too far from airport. About 25 min bus ride. Got there before check in so our room was not ready.wondered around the resort till it was. As everyone knows the beaches are outstanding, crystal clear water. Our room was pretty good as well. Clean and tidy. With nice finishes. Most of the staff was friendly, we did encounter a few people that worked there that almost wait on you to say hi. We did meet some outstanding people that went above and beyond to service us. Nivia at the buffet was simply mother Cuba Such a sweet lady, reminded me alot of my mother. And she treated us as such.ill never forget her and would simply go back to this resort base on the experience we had with her. They're lucky to have such an employee. Yasmiel over at the main lobby bar took care of me as I was not feeling well for the last 2 days. Getting me tea to calm my tummy down. Restaurants; The oriental was decent. My wife is a picky eater and she enjoyed the food. I didn't mind it. We brought our own salt and pepper shaker! Life saver! The international was also pretty decent place to eat. The Mexican, oh boy! Wish I hadn't gone. I was dissatisfied with dinner. Service was excellent but food not so much. And I am not picky at all. Had to go to buffet afterwards to eat something decent. By far the best is their Italian. And ladies playing lovely live music is just romantic and such a beautiful set to enjoy with your significant other. The buffet is good too. Lots of food and variety for every palate. We really enjoyed staying here. Did not want it to end. The night entertainment was excellent. Live singers and over at the stage outside was awesome. We spent all our time on the beach, dont care much for pool area. But it's really nice area with a swin up bar and its shaded. Every lunch they also cooked BBQ outside which was really good as well. Daily entertainment around pool and beach area. We would go back to this place in the future 100%.

Arrived on a Monday evening and proceeded to our room. It was a horrible night as the room was located next to a service elevator and back door to the bar. The next morning we spoke with Felix at the reception who immediately agreed to change our room that day. In the afternoon, Felix and Juanita were outstanding in providing us with better accommodation and also included a complimentary bottle of rum for our inconvenience. This was very much appreciated as we had stayed at Sol Palmeras the three previous years and always felt that the staff had our best insterests. The resort is not huge, which is good..everything is near. Many improvements have been made: the rooms have been refurbished; there is a fruit bar and ice cream parlour near the pools. The outdoor BBQ is a nice touch with fresh chicken, pork or sausages. There is always a variety of yummy treats on the beach: paella everyday. The boys at the beach bar aim to please!! We only dined at the Latino Restaurant the last night of our stay. Omar was very helpful and also new a few words of our native tongue: Polish.... The steak we ordered was prepared perfectly. The only down side when dining at the buffet or late dinner is that there is no coffee service. This we do not understand as an espresso with dessert is to be enjoyed together. Overall, it was a beautiful week. Thank you Sol Palmeras and to all the staff.

Stayed a week for a destination wedding. The good: beach and newly renovated bungalows. The Bad: buffet food was awful, pool was small and the service was hit and miss. We ate at 2 of the al la cartes, Italian and Chinese. The Italian was less than good and the Chinese was probably the best food we had on the resort all week. The resort is quite dated and they are doing renovations on the bungalows. If you get a bungalow request the 100 or 200 section.
