A Historic Treasure Ruined by Corporate Greed

The Camelback Inn was formerly, and justly, known as the jewel of the Marriott system. No longer. It has been utterly ruined by corporate greed, manifested in management that favors corporate events over individual guests, "renovations" that are destroying the property's historic character, and budget cuts that make it impossible for staff to provide decent service. Tonight, for example, after waiting on lengthy hold to speak to a staff member (which now happens literally every single time you pick up the phone), I was advised that room service is currently taking 1:45. The excuse offered - which is the same excuse they now offer for every service fail - is that the resort is "near capacity." Excuse me, this resort has for decades run at capacity from December through April without dropping service standards to levels that would be unacceptable at a Residence Inn. While the resort continues to offer a beautiful and unique setting, the ongoing destruction of the property's historic character - which began with construction of the new "event center" and continues through a hideous ongoing room remodel - combined with ever declining service levels, have led to withdraw my formerly enthusiastic recommendation of this once great property.

I had booked with another hotel to attend a conference in Phoenix, but was disappointed to discover the pool was under construction in 105 degree weather. I found an available room at JW Marriott Scottsdale for one night online and booked it. When I arrived, I asked the front desk if I could extend my reservation to 2 nights, which they were able to do so at the same online rate I had booked! The "rooms" feel like private villas, and they shuttle you around in golf carts since the property is so expansive. Service at the pool and the restaurant was very timely and friendly. You can also hike up Mummy Mountain from the edge of the property, or ride bikes they provide to hike up Camelback Mountain. I can't wait to visit this property again in the future!

This resort is so comfortable and relaxing that I can’t wait to visit again. We enjoyed one whole day at the spa and I would definitely recommend even if you don’t get a spa treatment. I did get a body wrap and it was worth the cost. The pools were amazing, the room was very comfortable and safe and it was located fairly near most things. Highly recommend!

Yah even if for just one night, go and stay there.

Shoulder season, price was right and I needed one more night to get to platinum with Bonvoy...it was just a one night staycation but totally worth it. The casitas are awesome, the R Bar is awesome and Rita's Mexican is awesome. So I guess what I'm saying is if you get the chance go, it's totally worth it.

We've been going here for over 35 years. I'm sure Mr. Marriott has no idea how things have changed. No turn-down service the first night (BTW, you used to get a cookie on your pillow, now - nothing). Not a big deal, but our t.p. was never changed until we had to do it ourselves. The new floors mean that you hear everything in every room around you at all hours. The bar, Rita's, is incredibly poorly laid out. There is a long "community" table which probably seats 20 people - but who wants that? And the chairs at the tables have such short backs that they're incredibly uncomfortable. Even the landscaping, which used to be spectacular, is now just ok. And this may sound petty, but as elite members we were disappointed not to get upgraded and they no longer waive the ridiculous resort fee. Also, I was never able to make an out-going call from our room. I kept getting "you are not able to make this call; please contact your system administrator" And no one could figure it out! On the plus side, the spa is still wonderful (although very, very expensive). And Tanya, our server in Rita's bar, was great.
