    The accomodations are astonishingly poor. The main hotel rooms are basic at best. The bungalows, with so many stairs, are death traps. Heaven forbid there's a fire or other emergency in the night. Patio area is non-existent. The food is sadly, also, basic at best. There is one "gourmet" restaurant, where the older, exclusively male, wait staff makes an attempt. The attempt falls short. I had two lobster tails (for which I paid extra, twice). One was delicious. It's partner, inedible. How on earth did they manage that? The common, relaxation areas near the lobby are ridiculous. Save your money. Go elsewhere.

    My husband and I enjoyed Varadero and especially the Melia Las Americas hotel so much last year that we went back again early in March 2020. We had another great experience - great room, wonderful beach, excellent restaurants - especially Sakura Japanese Restaurant, and La Arcada. The entertainment during the day and evenings was wonderful and the staff were phenomenal - especially the front desk staff who were always pleasant and so helpful (special thanks to Frank the porter!). Thank you to everyone at the hotel who made our stay so enjoyable!

    Stayed in MLA for 10 days in February. Was persuaded by their 4 1/2 star rating. ROOM: There are several options for rooms here. They have bungalows, newly renovated rooms on one side called The Levels, and the older part of the hotel we had been assigned Arrived late (flight) and were checked in almost immediately. Were offered an upgrade for an extra 10 CUC per night, (top floor ocean view) and accepted it. We were in a bit of a shock when we got up to the room. Not at all deserving of a 3 star resort, never mind a 4 1/2 star. First thing we noticed is that the "queen" bed was actually two singles pushed together, Second thing was one of the a/c units wasn't working. Maintenance came up and said the fan was broken, his boss would come replace it tomorrow. Choice was either no a/c or the one blowing right at the bed. There was also a huge crack in one on the windows, and the repair was placing some film on it to hold it together. The rubber seal holding the window in was hanging down, and the whole window moved if you touched it. Seemed like a safety issue to me. ..long way down if you leaned or fell against it. There were fixtures hanging loose from the ceiling, laminate on the mini-bar was peeled off, and we discovered the shelf in the closet was broken when we tried to put an empty carry-on on it. Were not at all impressed, so I went down and expressed my disappointment with the room to the front desk. The very nice and accommodating staff said there were no rooms tonite, but come back tomorrow and they will move us. So we did. Was shown a slightly nicer room on a lower floor without the view, and a suite on The Levels. The lower room also had twin beds, and the Levels room had a true king....took that one. Nice room, obviously renovated, waaaay better than the old room, so we were happier. Food: The food here is above average fare for Cuba. Don't go looking for AAA Alberta beef...you'll be disappointed. The buffet has a nice variety with a few changes through the week. They have an omlette bar and pancake bar in the morning, and a fresh meat and a fresh custom pasta bar in the evening. The fresh fish was some of the best we've had. We tried all of the al a carte restaurants, they were all good, but Limoncello and the La Arcada were our favorites. Note - all the al a cartes are formal dress...no shorts/swimsuits with tank tops. We saw a few people turned away for improper dress. Arcada was the only place in the hotel that had a decent steak. Everywhere else was paper thin and rather tough. The reservations are limited to four per week of your stay, and they start taking reservation for the week on Sunday or Monday...I forget which. The beach bar was our go-to during the day. Decent fast food. On Sunday, the hotel actually ran out of beer. Limited selection at the bars and missed restocking the mini bar. Could happen anywhere, I guess. Staff: All the staff we encountered were exceptional. The buffet staff kept your glass full and table clear, the front desk were always helpful and friendly, the activities staff kept us entertained, bartenders and waiters/waitresses were always hopping. Kudos to you all! HOTEL: The hotel itself seem to be going through some badly needed renovations. There was a new pool with swim-up bar getting ready to open. I suspect the by the time I post this, it will be open. The pool we used was losing tiles by the day. There was a collection by the edge of all the loose tiles collected. Of the 3 rooms we saw, there were broken or cracked windows in all of them. Some of the basic maintenance seems to get overlooked. Fixtures loose, covers missing, wires out, broken shelf, broken A/C, laminate peeling. The things you would expect a 4 1/2 star hotel to stay on top of. See some picture I posted and you decide. Was discussing it with another guest by the pool one day, and she gave it a 2 1/2 star rating. There does seem to be a large, faithful collective of returning guests, mostly golfers I would assume. The hotel is located right on the golf course, and a 5 minute walk to the Plaza Americas mall if you want to shop off resort. Prices are pretty much the same as at the hotel for rum and cigars. They offer currency exchange at a reasonable rate at the front desk. And Wi-Fi is a buck and hour, also available at the front desk. If you don't use the full hour, you can shut it off and log in again later. Just checking email and minor surfing and the hour was good enough for 3 or four days. If you want to go into town, the double decker bus stops out front and you can hop on / hop off all day for 5 CUC. TIP: Your room allotment is 2 beer and 2 soda per day. If you don't use them, they don't add 2 more. Take any leftovers out and stash them before they replenish your mini bar every day. Cuba is the only country where the Duty Free store at the airport is more expensive than the hotel. Get your liquor/cigars before at the hotel or in town and pack it in your suitcase.

    Excellent Cuban adventures Melias Las Americas

    My husband and I have been to this hotel three times and each year we have had a fantastic time. This year we brought another couple for their first Cuban adventure. Positive feedback on the food, entertainment, staff, beaches, pool and poolbar, restaurants and a private tour in a vintage 1958 PontiacLauentian by driver Raidel Bello and tour guide Anna. A must experience for anyone wanting to see auntentic Havana. Again we are all coming back next year. There is much fear about the economy because the Covid 19 virus as the people depend upon our tourism. Living in Canada we can have access and support from our government. During our 14 days in quarantine I am reminded and thankful for the incredible people in Cuba working under that stress.

    10/10 would recommend this resort.we went with another couple and all had a great time. The staff and service were great. I didn't feel I ever needed to tip to receive better service; I simply left tips for the service we received which was always good. Travelling to Cuba the expectations on the food are generally low but I will say this resort surpassed my food expectations. Never once had a bad meal. The al la cartes were all great (went to 3 of the 4; didnt go to Robelzo(sp) ) the buffet didnt have a huge selection but always had something good and always options for fresh cooked at the buffet too !! ?? the location was perfect for us as we like going into Varadero a few times during the week we are there. The beach is second to none and right out front the hotel. Pools, Bars and grounds in general are well kept and clean. We stayed in an apartment style bungalow in "the level" section and was very happy with the room; very modern and clean.and lastly if you are a golfer the course is literally 5 steps away!! And easy to book a time for that. Cannot believe the people who leave negative reviews. Not sure how you complain in a setting as beautiful as that. The only thing we noticed was the older crowd ( we are in our 30s) we found it to be fairly quiet in the evenings but weren't too bothered by it as we were travelling with friends. Definitely hope to return again one day ! (Second time in Veradero but first time at this resort)
