We recently spent 10 amazing days at Cocobay Resort on our honeymoon and can honestly say that it was perfect. The accommodation is beautiful and really adds something to the stay having your own little cottage. The staff were fantastic, engaging, friendly, helpful and always smiling and happy to help. The food was great, we never had the same thing twice. All in all we’ll definitely go back, it was perfect.

    Repeater's Perspective

My wife and I are “repeaters.” That’s what Cocobay calls guests who come back for a return visit. With so many wonderful places in the world, you might ask, why would anyone go somewhere a second time? Well, we do it when we find a destination that consistently provides exactly what we want in a vacation without including a lot of extra things we know we pay for but never use. For us, Cocobay is one of those destinations. So, what is it about Cocobay that keeps us coming back? Let me tell you. The setting is beautiful. You stay in your own private cottage located on a lushly landscaped hillside, looking out on a stunning water view that somehow never gets old. The al fresco restaurant and bar are only steps away, perched on a rocky peninsula that has water views all around. There is a beautiful coral sand beach right next door, complete with loungers for relaxing and thatched palapas for shade. Two other beaches are just a short walk away. The accommodations are just right. Your cottage won’t scream ostentatious luxury, but its casual Caribbean style is perfect for the relaxed feel of the resort. It includes all the things you really want: king size bed, A/C, refrigerator, coffee maker, open-air deck, and hammock. Your outside space is discretely screened from the other cottages by bougainvillea, palms, or other tropical plants. You can upgrade to a cottage with a plunge pool, or even a premium waterfront suite that includes, in addition to a plunge pool, a larger deck, slipper tub, and day bed. The food is amazing. You won’t find a giant buffet with ice sculptures and carving stations at this resort. What you will find are creative, delectable dishes that are exquisitely presented and impeccably served. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style with a cooking station to get your eggs made the way you want them in the morning and a local fish freshly grilled at lunch. The evening meal is served a la carte in four courses: appetizer, soup or pasta, entree, and dessert. Seafood and vegetarian options are available every night. Menus rotate biweekly, so even if you stay two weeks (like we did), you’ll never see the same thing twice. If you get hungry in the late afternoon, you can order “bar bites” at the main bar. These include sweet potato wedges, Caesar salads, pizza, or chicken wings, separately or in combination. It is all made to order, and everything is elegantly presented. Yes, even bar bites can’t escape the special Cocobay treatment! It always feels romantic. From the stunning views during the day, to the subdued lighting at night; from the open-air dining, to the tasteful evening entertainment, it is clear that everything has been designed to create an atmosphere of romance. Maybe that’s why Cocobay is so popular with honeymooners—and with couples who just like to pretend it’s their honeymoon all over again (every year). It never feels crowded. Maybe that’s because it’s a small resort. Maybe it’s the two infinity pools, the ample beach, the daytime beach bar, or the many seating/lounging areas all over the resort. Maybe it’s because there are so many exciting touring options available outside the resort. I don’t know. All I can say is that it never feels crowded—even at peak season! The staff members are like family. Okay, so I saved the best for last. This one defies explanation. They won’t tell you about this on the website or in the brochure (do they still have those?). All I can say is that the staff members always seem happy. And they want you to be happy, too. They want to exceed your expectations. If something is not right, they want to know, and every employee is empowered to fix it. There is very little turnover in the staff members from year to year. The resort manager hasn’t changed since it opened nearly 20 years ago. But this still doesn’t capture it. The staff members are more than just friendly—they are engaging. They enjoy getting to know you. And you will delight in getting to know them, too. A brief story from our most recent visit might help illustrate this point. The Sunday night band is especially good—so good that people get up to dance. When the dinner service ends, the servers don’t just go home. They step out of the restaurant, join the fun, and dance along with the guests during the last song. It’s a wonderful moment—a quintessentially Cocobay moment. At Cocobay, you’re not just guests at a resort, you feel like special guests in their home. And the best thing is, you never wear out your welcome. Cocobay bills itself as a “boutique” resort. That means that it doesn’t try to appeal to all tastes. So, it may not be right for you. But if this report resonates with your concept of an ideal vacation, then you might give them a try. Be warned, however. Cocobay will spoil you for anything else. Believe me, we know. We plan to return to Cocobay again next year—for our 16th visit.

We recently booked Cocobay for a last minute getaway for a few days! I can say with 1000% confidence that we will be back soon. Customer service, views, food, everything completely exceeded our expectations - from the front desk to cleaning the rooms. Definitely spend the extra money on the floating buffet and a massage. Thank you again! We will be back!

On the first night of our stay they had the room set up like we were on The Batchelor -- gorgeous flowers petals and candles. The view from our private pool and back porch were breathtaking. If you don't want to hang out in your own private pool in the back porch of your room with views of the ocean and beaches (which is all very private), then you can hang out at the resort's 2 infinity pools, and another smaller pool overlooking the beach. The two big pools have a bartender working hard making you specialty cocktails or serving up some great local beers or wine. The pictures of this resort DO NOT DO THE PLACE JUSTICE. Absolute paradise, easy wifi connections, nice spa treatments, great bar staff (the drink of the day is always yummy), and delightful concierge Kim (Kimtell? Kimton? I don't remember her name but she was awesome. Only downside (if there is a downside) is the food portions. Don't be shy to order double appetizers or double main courses because the servings are *extremely* small -- ie: we ordered fried scallops for appetizer and the appetizer was literally ONE scallop. Don't be surprised to see gorgeous rainbows after it showers lightly in the morning from your room view. On the last night of our stay they made up our room like The Batchelor (times 10)... an abundance of fresh flower petals and gorgeous LED candles placed all over the room; we were so pleasantly surprised and appreciated the gesture. People love it so much that we met many couples who had been there for 6-8 years in a row! That speaks volumes.
