We were booked into Nonsuch Bay for 14 nights in September but when we arrived we were told we were upgraded to The Escape as Nonsuch was being refurbished. I have a written a separate review for The Escape. Although we didn't stay here we visited the beach on a number of occasions. The wildlife was great, there was a lot of fish, crabs and on one day there were jelly fish which wasn't a problem. The pelicans were flying by and on another day there was a Chicken Hawk diving into the sea catching fish. It was really peaceful lying under the palm trees listening to the waves. Even though there was refurbishments going on the grounds and facilities were kept very clean. Sailing and water sports were still on if you wanted to partake. Thank you to Walter and Aubrey for driving us back and forth and for making sure we had a cool box to keep us hydrated. Lovely peaceful place.

In April I booked through British Airways for a 10 day all inclusive holiday at Nonsuch Bay Resort commencing 14 September so this was not a last minute booking. On arrival we were collected from the airport and taken to The Escape at Nonsuch and told that we were being upgraded. We assumed we were at Nonsuch. The room was lovely with a plunge pool on the balcony, but The Escape was not what we had booked. For a start there was one small swimming pool, I think six people in it at one time and it would have been very crowded. Nonsuch supposedly had three swimming pools, one an infinity, so there was no comparison really. We were told by management that Nonsuch had had to close urgently for reconstruction. We were told we couldn't go down to the main hotel resort as it was completely closed, the beach was being dug up and diggers were on site and therefore all the amenities offered on their website were not available to us. No sailing lessons, no watersports, no beach, in fact no beach access. I think the management on Nonsuch behaved very shabbily. They should have contacted both British Airways and us prior to departure to let us know that our chosen hotel would be having construction works and offered us another hotel with equal or similar facilities or allowed us to change our dates of travel. They did no such thing. They took our money and then failed to deliver the holiday we were promised. On our second day we contacted British Airways who contacted the management at Nonsuch who denied that there was ongoing building works, Without the hotel's knowledge we walked to Nonsuch to see what was going on at the hotel and took photos of an empty hotel. We could see that building work was being carried out on the restaurant, the surrounding paving around swimming pools and to some bedrooms. The beach at that point had not been dug up. On our 5th day we accepted a transfer and spent our last five days at a sister hotel Cocobay on the Carribean side. I am very unhappy that Nonsuch think it is acceptable to advertise their facilities, take my booking and my money but then not provide the facilities that I paid for. This company does not appear to care for its guests and I would not recommend a hotel that treats its guests with such disdain. Incidentally, on our visit to Nonsuch I walked to the beach and the sea was full of jellyfish. I spoke to a construction worker at the hotel and he advised me to avoid getting stung as it usually ends with needing hospital treatment. He also said that the works were planned and not due to be completed until October 3rd which is not what management at the Escape were telling guests. Throughout our stay, we monitored their website and Nonsuch consistently advertised availability even though they were closed! On a final note, the staff at The Escape were all fantastic but it wasn't the holiday I had planned.

I stayed here beginning of August with my wife & 17year old son staying on an AI package for 11x nights. We had holidayed in Antigua a few times before and were looking forward so much to returning to this lovely island. We had booked through Virgin Holidays the previous August having read all the fabulous reviews, but what a difference a year can make. As stated in a previous review regarding a vacation also taken in August I can only agree entirely with the points made regarding the food quality & the man made beach at the family resort. Regarding the food, we found the breakfast was OK, but lunch time buffet was limited and sparse. The dinner menu was limited and the quality of the food was not as expected or as reviewed when we booked. In fact a few nights I didn’t bother to eat at all. The bbq night was the worst, I found the burger I had to wait for to be red raw on the inside and reported it to the chef but nothing was done about it. Regarding the beach I would though state that the beach was small but kept clean of the weed issues on a daily basis and my appreciation goes to the beach staff who kept it clean. Also the water sports staff were very good and attentive to our needs and the guidance given during the sailing lessons was excellent and we found the little beach bar and the barman to be a nice touch. Yes, regarding the fish, there aren’t any here, you need to take the boat trip to the nearby island which was free of charge booked from main reception. Regarding the accommodation, we had big problems. When we first arrived, we were taken to our 2x bed villa which as soon as I entered I reported that the air con in the living room was not working correctly and needed attention. I was told it was working but it clearly was just blowing warm air and not cooling at all. Ours in the bedroom was also deficient but the air con in my sons room was working OK. Sleeping was unbearable in 30 degree heat, as all external doors have meshed slatted vents which allow the hot air from outside to enter the villa rooms and so without air conditioning us British, used to the cooler climates, did suffer. Having reported the issue early next morning the engineer was called to fix the air con but did not fix it. In fact engineers tried to fix the air con units 7 times in 8 days and for some reason were unable to fix the units. In fact on the 8th day they managed to stop the air con in my sons room from cooling too. I was at this point, after a heated conversation with a member of the management, offered to be moved and reluctantly agreed as we only had 3 days left. We were moved to the new adult resort (Escape) up on the hill and this was a very different world. The food and service here is of a very high level and nothing like the stuff served on the family beach resort. We did find out that the head chef who was obviously based in the beach resort the previous year had been moved to the new adult resort and so had some management. This was very evident. We did enjoy our remaining 3 days but did not enjoy the first 8 days in the beach resort. It is as stated in previous review a very expensive resort and classes itself as a premium resort. The service, food, accommodation & and amenities we felt, fell very short of this. It was only on return to UK that I did also find out that many (if not all) these villas are actually privately owned and the villa we stayed in was actually up for sale ! It was showing signs of age and in need of attention in many areas particularly the wooden doors were in need of a new coat of varnish and so was the flooring. Regarding the Virgin Holidays rep, yes we did not see her either, but I did contact her regarding the issues we were having and she did provide me with good advise and assistance when needed. The issues we encountered were reported to Virgin Holidays and have now been dealt with and closed from our point of view. Would I return ? No chance, not at the price we payed for the level of food and accommodation we encountered. We left very disappointed and deeply out of pocket in our view.

So sorry the feedback form I left at hotel was never I’m leaving this trip advisor advice as Hotel never followed up our feedback! If you are going to Antigua don’t go here it’s not Antigua, it’s got a fake beach , it’s a very boring place to go and you won’t walk miles on white sand there simply isn’t any. The sand is shipped in not what you expect from a 4 star hotel! Our arrival on a white knuckle ride taxi was scary and so began the first part of the disappointment. Being told that the long trip to Antigua -on a very expensive trip -was to a man made beach! Taxi driver told us the sand was brought in. To say disappointment well that’s a mild feeling it was devastating! The reception was all as described very tired looking and the look into the restaurant was as others have described dirty. The rooms though were nice we had a sea view and were based high up ! This was a binoculars sea view really it was pretty far away from the restaurant reception and the beach! It was a hike day in and out to go to the man made beach! The first evening was followed by a BBQ . A lot of ponsy rules ie smart clothes and trousers and the chef showed up in the dirtiest clothes I have ever seen on a chef! We complained as it was chaos and no food hygiene or temperature checks or anything. Can’t say we ate anything and whilst reception passed it to the canteen manager who passed it to the canteen organiser we were really upset! In daylight the restaurant looked very tired and dirty and birds pinched food this was filthy. The rest of the food and meals were better but it was a really bad start! All the breakfast stuff was grubby. There was no fun at this hotel it was dead. A few evenings a band sang to no one and a few hardened drinkers made the most of every drink in the bar! The beach was nice enough but fake! The beach drinks were not available as promised . The sea was not full of fish there was nothing there to see. The only saving grace was the boat to green island . This is where you see fish and can snorkel . Advise is hire a car and get out and go and see Antigua and beaches! Go to the sister hotel and see life and fun and beauty and effort from staff. This was a disappointing trip only that we escaped we were abandoned there by virgin and we never saw our rep once ! DISGRACEFUL! Advice GO TO ANOTHER RESORT THIS WAS THE PITS!!!
