Doing what it can during a pandemic

Just back from a stay at the Fairmont and the overall impression is that the hotel is trying the best it can in a pandemic, but not likely at its best given the challenges of this past year (staffing and training being the most noticeable area negatively impacted). On the plus side, the hotel felt safe (staff and guests are masked in public areas and the every employee we encountered kept a reasonable distance, wore masks, and sanitized tables between guest seatings). It's a beautiful, expansive property with room for people to spread out. The man-made, sandy-bottomed lagoon is perfect for kids and just beyond a larger open water area (also protected) has amazingly good snorkeling (we snorkeled at another public site near Kona that is consistently on the top three snorkeling sites list and the area in front of the hotel is even better). There are also trails and roads with biking lanes in multiple directions that are great for walking, running, and biking. A nice tennis complex is also a few steps from the North Tower rooms. On the list of things to be improved: - definitely felt like the hotel is trying to recoup all the revenue it can between the resort fee that doesn't cover much and in not providing any beach umbrellas (but instead charging people for covered beach chairs and other shaded seating throughout the property) - the service in a few areas was lacking, especially in the front of house dining staff at various venues. At one point we noticed broken glass next to an empty table at Brown's Beach House and told one of the waiters, who first pretended not to work there, but then acted like we were bothering him. The same day we put in our name at the casual beach restaurant for dinner and were told we'd be seat next, but gave up after a 30 minute wait while staring at three empty tables. We also had to line up and then wait at least 20-30 minutes for breakfast each morning. - the rooms are a little tired, but ultimately serviceable Ultimately the property is well-situated (including a great supermarket nearby and a few good restaurants down the road) and will make guests who enjoy the water happy. It's a good choice for kids too, but hopefully they can iron out some service issues in the future.

Do not recommend. Roach, bugs, mold, water damage, poorly managed hotel. This was a below average stay and would not recommend - please stay elsewhere as you will have a much better time I can assure you that.

Our family of 4 stayed a week at the Fairmont Orchid. This was our first trip since COVID and it was really a perfect, relaxing stay .The room is exactly what you see in pictures and was well equipped and comfortable. We stayed on the gold floor, which provided complimentary breakfast & snacks throughout the day. The staff was wonderful and went out of their way on multiple occasions to make our stay perfect. The pool area was large and the water was warm (which isn't always the case). We enjoyed pool side food/drink service, which while expensive, was nice given the lack of dining options around the resort. The lagoon was also great and perfect for kids to snorkel in a stress free area. We ate at both Hale Kai and Binchotan. Both were convenient and the food was good. They have kids menus at both places which made family dinners a lot easier. We would definitely return when coming back to the big island.

This was a 5 night stay, we had 3 rooms, grandparents, parents, and kids. Had a garden, partial, and ocean view. Ocean was nice but not necessary, spent zero time on balcony. Resort appeared full. Rooms are clean and comfortable, plenty big for the 2 people per room we had. Ate at pool bar several times, all food was great, service was friendly except a very unpleasant hostess who clearly did not want to be there. Also had dinner at Binchotan, pretty ok, not great, also friendly service. Had a pool cabana and a beach cabana, really not necessary but was nice for the shade. Beach and pool are not places to relax, tons of screaming kids. Adult pool is separated from kids pool by a rope. Grounds are well maintained. If you’ve ever stayed at a 5 star hotel, you’ll know this is not one, but it is pretty good, you’d need to be a snob to have a problem with it. Biggest problem would be simple to fix-there is only one place to get coffee in the morning (Brown’s Deli). If you just want 2 coffees, you might wait 25 minutes or more. There could have easily been a satellite coffee station for non food and espresso drink orders. Also, they could have staffed up more. It was obviously a problem, and the fact that they haven’t found a solution is mind-boggling. One final piece of advice, book restaurants at least a month early, you will not get in to Brown’s or any of the other good restaurants if you don’t. Highly recommend Meridia at the Westin, wasn’t expecting much, it was great.

After getting our COVID vaccinations, our first thought was to return to this lovely resort. The rooms are super clean, staff very friendly, attentive and helpful, and beds comfortable. The restaurants were all very good. Our favorite was Binchotan where we ate twice. We would return to this resort in a heartbeat.
