Let me start off my saying the resort is beautiful, it’s well kept, the rooms are lovely, the employees are very nice. The pool is huge and it never felt busy. Our story: we arrived in Liberia and went up to La Fortuna, after our time in La Fortuna was completed we headed to the Tambarino to start our stay at the Marriott. We had our own car, so we didn’t have the luxury of a driver taking us straight to the hotel. Once we got into Tambarino area, there was one semi small sign for the Marriott that was hidden among other signs: we didn’t even see the sign the first day, causing us to end up in the town of Tambarino. Finally we figured out where we needed to be and made our way to the hotel. This hotel is definitely out there. You have to work to get to the property. If you are going to drive yourself, get an SUV. The drive once you leave the main road to get to the gate is bumpy. Once you pass through the main gate it’s about a 10 min drive to the hotel. We thought we were lost again because it seemed to take forever! Once we arrived at the lobby, we were greeted with a welcome drink. A coconut with coconut Milk to drink. While we were trying to check in there was an issue with our reservation. My boyfriend had booked the room for 4 people, 2 adults, 2 kids and entered their ages 15 and 14 (this was all done through Expedia) somehow when they went to pull up the reservation it was for only 2 people. So that was unfortunate. After we got everything figured out we headed to our room with the bell boy, who was very nice! We arrived a little late, so we explored the beach a little first. The beach itself is sandy, but it’s not a beach for swimming. The shore leading into the water is lined with very large rocks and tide pools. It’s pretty cool to explore, but not the best for swimming. I didn’t see a life guard, so I had my daughter stay out of the water. We explored the pool a few times, great area, lots of seating, warm water, clean. There are two options for eating down by the pool. We ended up eating at the pool side restaurant that turns into an Italian place at night. It was good food but very expensive! Family of 4 and we spent 160.00! Our second day there we ended up going to the concierge to book some activities. We ended up booking a catamaran ride, which was a ton of fun. The only thing that was disappointing is that I had reached out to the Marriott via email to see if we booked our activities through them if we would also get Marriott points and I was told yes. We asked about this in person and we were told this was incorrect. I even went back to the concierge office and was able to talk to the person who sent the email, she didn’t seem like she cared about the mistake. I ended up telling her I would be reaching out to corporate directly. Eating wise, the breakfast buffet offers a lot of variety. I was disappointed in NAU, one of the restaurants, it was a small variety of food. sabaro (??? The steak house) was the best restaurant! I’m a vegetarian and they had a menu just for vegetarians. Their garlic mashed potatoes were delicious. Our server was fantastic and the manager came out to greet us, he was awesome! All in all we had a great stay. I’m not sure we would book activities through the hotel again because they are more expensive, but overall we would stay here again just knowing the the beach isn’t desirable and it’s a long trek to the hotel.

Remote resort that is family friendly

Pros - Ocean front suite is large with a great shower - Friendly staff - Lot's of activities included Cons - Regular rooms can be tight and have double beds, not queen beds - Not much night life - Activities book up quickly - Food is pricey, especially the on-site store For our first trip to Costa Rica we chose to stay 8 nights at the resort. We arranged transportation for our group through the hotel ($240 one way for 8 people in a sprinter) and our driver was there waiting to take us the 1 hr 20 min drive to the resort. Upon entering the "area," it's still about a 10 minute drive further to reach the resort. There isn't a lot close by, so if you don't have a car, you will have to arrange for transportation to go anywhere. They have a shuttle that drops you off in Tamarindo (20 min drive) for $20 RT. There is also a free shuttle (if arranged by the concierge) that will take you to a nearby Beach Club that the hotel has an affiliation with. Make sure to bring your towels so you don't pay for that, and it has a limited surfboard and boogie board rental supply. Further down the beach (15 min walk) is Lola's, that has a bigger and better surfboard and boogie board rental and also a bar (closes at 6 pm) and kitchen (closes at 5 pm). The surf there is a beach break, while the Beach Club is for advanced surfers as it has a reef. I found Tamarindo to be a lot like Mexican surf towns, lot's of souvenirs and vendors on the beach trying to sell you things. The hotel offers some activities - we enjoyed the cooking class, mixology, and beach cocktails. We also went to the movies, which was nice as the evenings are pretty quiet there. The give you random amounts of tickets for the classes, and I am sure you could probably ask for more. Some classes say there is a fee, but we were not charged as we had tickets for everything. The yoga class is more of a stretching and breathing class, not much active yoga. And, the nature walk was a little slow and repetitive, so we left that one. The gym is well equipped and open 24/7 as well as the pool. But, at night, the pool is very dimly lit. In terms of eating, we ate at Azul and Tamarine, both were okay, but over-priced. The buffet has a large selection of items, and some local food, but for $30 you need to make sure that you eat enough to get your money's worth. We looked into some off-site activities and found them to be pricey. We ended up renting a catamaran and got different pricing from different people in the tour office. We ended up spending $1800 for a half day with lunch, and while not cheap, it was our favorite activity. The crew was very accommodating and we saw turtles, whales, and snorkeled. The snorkeling is not vibrant as in some tropical areas, but is a fun activity. For those who are looking for lot's of activity, the resort is isolated and you will need to leave and drive at least 20 mins for more activities. Overall, I would say the resort is a nicer than average resort, but not "luxury" as the service and amenities don't rise to that of the higher end chains. I erred on the side of generous in my rating as it wasn't average, but if you are looking for a "Four Seasons" experience, this is not it. But, for what you pay for, it's definitely fair. And, despite weather reports of daily thunderstorms, it rained and thundered only 2 days, but definitely humid and hot when the sun is fully out. It wasn't too buggy and while I brought bug spray, didn't use it and got just a few bites.

EVERYTHING about this resort was EXCEPTIONAL!! From the moment we got there to when we left...A+++ The staff was amazing and friendly; the food was incredible (even the ketchup tasted amazing); the pool; the rooms; walks on the beach; the wildlife; the excursions; the marketplace, the hammocks...EVERYTHING!! My family and I, which include my wife and two teenage children (19-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter) have been fortunate enough to vacation to quite a bit of places (Hawaii, Mexico, Atlantis, Disney multiple times, multiple cruises) and BY FAR we all agree that this place was THE BEST!! Will DEFINITELY go back and DEFINITELY recommend!!

We chose this hotel based on the reviews we read on Trip Advisor and are so glad that we did. The hotel is beautiful and the views from our ocean view room is breathtaking, all of the staff are so nice and super accommodating. The hotel is exceptionally clean and the food at ALL of their restaurants was great. We can’t say one bad thing to say about this hotel.

We are loyal Marriott people and often stay at JW Marriotts when possible. This has to be the best one yet. The resort itself is absolutely beautiful, right on the beach. The decor is equally nice. The pool is ridiculously huge (open 24/7) and also has an infinity pool beach side. The room itself was also beautiful. As with all Marriotts, the beds were heavenly. Lots of space in the bathroom, huge balcony with roll up/down screen and large close/drawer space. When staying here, you also gain access to the separate but adjacent Beach Club. They have a gym, spa, equally awesome pool and a restaurant. Beach Club closes at 6PM. The staff is very friendly and especially welcoming to all. The greeted us upon check-in with a fresh coconut and they gave our children each a stuffed sloth animal. What a nice touch. Particularly help fun was Carlos who greeted us. The concierge was also super-helpful and gave us great advice for other local beaches and activities. Speaking of activities, there are multiple activities every day included, even for the kids. So many to name but a few are morning nature walks, free bike rentals, yoga, movie night, all are very cool. Not to mention but we booked a serious tour right from the hotel which I will review separately that included zip line, horse riding, a 1200 ft. water slide, lunch and mud bath & hot springs. Absolutely amazing and a really great price. I could go on and on but you have to see and experience for yourself, please trust me on this one...
