We absolutely loved this place. It had a feeling of home and community and was a perfect place for our honeymoon. The service was great and the food as well. We could not have been happier with our experience! The only thing I did not appreciate is being approached by Coco, who said she was concierge, only she sat at a different desk and tried to sell a time share breakfast that she swore wasn't a time share breakfast. I get the time share thing, but don't insult me by lying about your motives.

The staff are all great and bend over backwards to accommodate. Rooms are modest but clean. Food is ranges from ok to very good. We certainly will return. The beach is a 5-minute walk with snacks and drinks available. No complaints here.

Nice little 2 1/2 star resort if you prefer the pool to the beach

The staff are wonderful in this resort. I especially appreciated Lucia at the front desk...she always had a lovely smile to greet me. I saw her every day when I went for change for tips. The pool area, outdoor bar and snack bar are very nice, I would say 4 star. The food in the main buffet got boring pretty quickly but there was good salad and desert to be had. The single a-la-carte restaurant is in a windowless box of a room. The staff seem eager to please but the food is only Mexican and wasn't very good. You have to walk 5 mins to the private beach area which has it's own snack bar and liquor bar. You can also take a shuttle van. The biggist con I would have to say is the rooms. They are clean but really, seriously in need of modernization.

    Hacienda Buenaventura and smoking

Everything is superb at Hacienda Buenaventura... except during Happy Hour, later afternoon, the smokers light up and make it impossible for non smokers to sit near the pool. They also light up at the Beach Club. Often there are several groups of smokers, chatting, drinking and smoking, making it impossible to be anywhere near them. It sure would be great if there was a designated area where they could go to smoke that doesn't disrupt the other guests. Like in the grassy area behind the pool. A guest told me her friends won't come back because so the heavy smoke. They are the minority but cause problems for non smokers, especially someone like me who is very sensitive to smoke. Basically I can't breathe very well and have to get away from the smoke. They also sit on the concrete wall 4 feet from the bar and smoke as if no one near by can smell it. . Inside the bar lounge is non smoking but of course the constant smoke wafts right into non smoking areas.

Second visit, sadly not so charming.

We've had some home time to think about our recent 26 night stay at the Hacienda Buenaventura. This was our second visit to the resort and we had expectations of another pleasant, guiet, friendly experience. Sadly, it didn't work out that way... it started off badly when restaurant staff decided to shun and ignore us for the first few days. Apparently we weren't tipping consistently or enough to make them happy. We upped the game with better tips at every meal and solved the service problem. We noticed the place became super packed with locals on weekends when the resort offers a 30% off deal. Mealtime was crazy busy, kids screaming, etc. Later in the evening, adults would over drink, yell, and keep going well past midnight. Food can become an issue when staying this long, and we eventually tired of the choices. One night the grilled feature dish was "carved" processed ham. People feel they can smoke almost anywhere. The service at the only special restaurant was slow and there were many mistakes made. Drinks are very watered down, as you would expect. Overall we would say this resort has lost much of its original charm and appeal for us; the main issues were noise, smoking, repetitive food choices, and too many people jammed into a small resort property. Will we go again?... sadly probably not.
