COVID-19 travel policies

The way we travel is very different due to COVID-19. Rules and requirements can change quickly. That's why it's important to review the current COVID-19 travel policies for masking, boarding and contact tracing, as well as the travel requirements applicable to you based on the country that issued your travel documents.

If your travel plans are affected by COVID-19, our flexible change/cancel policy may apply.

COVID-19 vaccination requirements

These are boarding requirements for the flight. You may be subject to additional entrance requirements based on your destination.

All guests aged 12 and over travelling on any airline on a flight in Canada domestically, transborder, or internationally will require one of the following: 

Effective October 30, 2021

  • Proof of full vaccination
  • Proof of an approved negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before the flight

All guests will be required to declare that they have one of the above. Providing false information will result in a $5,000 fine. Failure to provide proof of vaccination or PCR test upon request will result in a substantial fine. 

Effective Early November - exact date to be determined

All guests travelling to the United States will have to meet U.S. Government requirements for foreign travellers, which exceeds those requirements of the Canadian Government. All guests travelling to the United States will have to show both of the following: 

  • Proof of full vaccination, and
  • Proof of an approved negative PCR or Antigen test taken within 3 days of the flight

Effective November 30, 2021

All guests aged 12 and over travelling on any airline on a flight in Canada domestically, or internationally to a location other than the United States will require one of the following:  

  • Proof of full vaccination
  • Proof a medical or religious exemption with an approved negative PCR test
  •

Guests travelling to/from the United States

United States Federal Law requires that guests two years of age and older must wear a non-medical mask or face covering to cover their nose, mouth and chin during travel. Failure to comply will result in denial of boarding, removal from the aircraft, and/or penalties under United States Federal Law.

Acceptable conditions to remove the mask:

  • ID check during boarding
  • eating or drinking on board for no more than 15 minutes
  • communicating with someone hard of hearing
  • using oxygen
  • a guest is unconscious


Exceptions:

  • Children under two
  • Persons having trouble breathing
  • Persons with disabilities

Guests travelling within/from Canada

Transport Canada requires that all guests, six years of age or older, have a non-medical mask or face covering to cover their nose, mouth and chin during travel. Children ages two to five are encouraged to wear a mask at all times. If a child is unable to tolerate wearing a mask, it is not mandatory, but their guardian must have a mask readily available to the child prior to the boarding process. Children under two are not required to wear a mask.

General guidelines for currently approved masks:

  • a surgical mask or cloth mask that is made of multiple layers of tightly woven material (such as cotton or linen) and is secured to the head with ties or ear loops
    • this includes “no-sew masks” that are made using a folded scarf, bandana or piece of material and secured using elastic, hair ties or fabric ties.
  • a face covering associated with religious garments, providing they cover the nose and mouth and are made of at least two layers of tightly woven fabric
  • a face covering with a front clear plastic panel for lip reading if the entire mask is not made of plastic or other non-breathable material


General guidelines for masks that are currently not approved:

  • contains exhalation valves (including N95 masks with exhalation valves)
  • does not attach around the ears or head with loops (e.g. neck gaiter or neck warmer)
  • masks made completely of plastic or other non-breathable materials (e.g. gas masks and painter’s masks)
  • anything exclusively made of materials that can easily fall apart (e.g. tissue, paper towel)
  • bandanas or scarves that are not folded and secured into the “no-sew” style.


When travelling by air, guests will be required to cover their mouth and nose:

  • at Canadian airport screening checkpoints
  • while boarding their flight
  • at all times during the flight
  • when instructed to by a crew member


Guests may momentarily remove their mask if they are actively eating or drinking.

Many Canadian airports have made masks mandatory in all public spaces. Please check your airport's requirements before departing.


Zero tolerance mask policy

To support Transport Canada mask requirements guests who do not comply will face penalties including denied boarding and suspension of travel on any WestJet Group aircraft for up to one year. The WestJet Group includes WestJet, WestJet Encore, WestJet Link and Swoop.

Non-compliance will be managed through a three-step process:

  1. Guests will first be asked to put the mask on in a discussion with cabin crew.
  2. A warning (yellow card) that masks are required, and compliance is necessary.
  3. A note from the captain and notification that non-compliance will result in follow up notification that they will be placed on a no-fly list for 12 months.


Medical exemptions

Transport Canada requires that guests who are unable to wear a face mask due to a medical condition, must present an official medical note from a physician, nurse practitioner, dentist, or physician assistant specifying this exception or they will be denied boarding.

Medical certificates must be issued by one of the above professionals only. There are many different types of medical professionals; however, only those listed may issue a valid medical certificate. In addition, medical certificates must:

  • be on official letterhead
  • be dated
  • clearly state the guest’s name and that they have a medical condition which prevents them from wearing a face mask
  • be the original certificate


Mask exemption cards will not be accepted as a form of medical exemption.

Health questionnaire

  • In compliance with Transport Canada regulations, to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), we require all guests to respond to a health questionnaire.
  • We urge guests to respond truthfully as providing false or misleading information could result in a $5,000 fine under the Aeronautics Act.

Symptom screening

  • If you are displaying COVID-19 symptoms or feeling unwell, you cannot board a flight.
    • If you have a medical condition that presents symptoms similar to those of COVID-19, you will need a doctor’s note or medical certificate that states your medical condition to board the flight.

Passenger disclosure and declaration

  • In compliance with Transport Canada regulations and to reduce the spread of COVID-19, WestJet requires that all guests truthfully disclose their vaccination status starting October 30, 2021. 
  • Failure to provide proof of vaccination, exemption or PCR test upon request will result in a substantial fine.

Denied boarding

  • If you have been ordered by the provincial or territorial government or local public health to self-isolate or quarantine you will be denied boarding.
  • If you are denied boarding for a domestic flight, we will rebook you to travel at least 14 days after the original date.
    • To travel earlier, a valid medical certificate stating that you are not affected by the COVID-19 virus is required.
  • Guests denied boarding for repatriation flights will not be re-accommodated.

Inputting the contact information for all guests on your booking is mandatory during the 24-hour check-in process online and at the kiosk.

You're no longer able to bypass the information screen, and you must input up-to-date information before a boarding pass will be issued. Guests remain responsible for providing accurate information.


Entry requirements by destination


Please refer to the provincial or territorial government websites of your arrival destination prior to travel for the most up to date information on interprovincial travel restrictions. You may be subject to travel prohibitions which restrict entry to certain provinces or territories or additional measures, such as a mandatory 14-day self-isolation when you arrive.

Within 72 hours prior to departure, all guests travelling to Aruba are expected to complete Aruba's online Embarkation and Disembarkation (ED) application. Upon completion, a receipt will be provided and an electronic or paper copy must be presented to WestJet for travel. 
 
Guests are required to obtain a medical certificate with a negative Coronavirus (COVID-19) PCR test result (Molecular SARS-CoV-2 test based on a nasal swab) issued at most 72 hours before departure. Guests must upload the test at www.edcardaruba.aw at most 12 hours before departure.  
 
Guests without a medical certificate are subject to a PCR test on arrival at their own expense and must quarantine for 1 day. 
 
Guests younger than 15 years are exempt from the COVID 19 PCR test requirements.

All guests travelling to the Bahamas are required obtain a Travel Health Visa prior to travel. This document is to be presented to WestJet prior to boarding.

Vaccinated travellers

Effective August 6, 2021, to apply for a Travel Health Visa to travel to The Bahamas, in addition to providing proof of being fully vaccinated, you will be required to obtain a negative COVID-19 test (either a Rapid Antigen Test or PCR), taken no more than five (5) days prior to the date of arrival to The Bahamas.  The name and address of the lab where the test was performed must be clearly displayed on the test result.

Unvaccinated travellers

Unvaccinated travellers ages 12 and older entering The Bahamas and/or those travelling inter-island from Nassau & Paradise Island, Grand Bahama Island, Bimini, Exuma, Abaco, and North and South Eleuthera, including Harbour Island, must obtain a negative COVID-19 PCR (swab) test taken no more than 5 days prior to the date of arrival. Test must return a negative result for entry into The Bahamas.

 As of August 6, 2021, all children, between the ages of 2 and 11, wishing to enter The Bahamas will be required to obtain a negative COVID-19 test (either a Rapid Antigen Test or PCR), taken no more than five (5) days prior to the date of arrival to The Bahamas.

The Barbados Government requires that all guests travelling to Barbados complete and submit an online Embarkation / Disembarkation (ED) travel form 24 hours prior to travel.

Guests originating travel from a high-risk country for COVID 19, e.g. Canada, United States and United Kingdom, are required to:

  • Stay at a preapproved accommodation
  • Have a Covid19 PCR negative test result taken within 72h prior to arrival
  • Upload the Covid19 PCR negative test to the Embarkation / Disembarkation (ED) travel form
  • Present a copy of the COVID19 PCR test results at the airport
     

Children under 5 who are accompanied by a legal guardian do not require a COVID 19 PCR test.

A second COVID 19 test will be taken 4 to 5 days after arrival and upon receipt of the 2nd negative COVID 19 test result the individual be allowed to leave their preapproved accommodation and explore the island of Barbados.

Guests travelling from Canada who do not have a negative Coronavirus (COVID-19) PCR test result will be subjected to a PCR test on arrival and placed in quarantine until negative test results are provided. This does not apply to children under 5 who are accompanied by a legal guardian.

All guests travelling to Costa Rica must complete an online Health Pass form within 72 hours of departure.  Upon completion of the form guests will receive a QR code that must be carried on a mobile phone or printed out to present to the authorities on arrival. One form must be completed per person, including minors, without exception.

Guests must also have proof of travel insurance that provides the following coverage:

  1. Valid during the entire stay in Costa Rica (coverage dates). 
  2. $50,000 for medical expenses, including COVID-19 disease. 
  3. $2,000 for lodging expenses in case of COVID-19 quarantine.

Some bookings may be covered by WestJet’s no-charge COVID-19 travel insurance, please review eligibility and coverage details. For those not eligible, additional coverage will be required. Visit the Costa Rica tourism website for information on Costa Rica insurance providers.

Effective August 1, 2021, all tourists under 18 years of age or are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and inoculated with Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson can enter the country without proof of Insurance coverage

 The last dose of the vaccine must have been applied at least 14 days before arrival in Costa Rica.

Vaccinated tourists must attach the vaccination certificate to the Health Pass. As proof, vaccination certificates and vaccination cards that contain at least the following information will be accepted:

  1. Name of the person who received the vaccine
  2. Date of each dose
  3. Pharmaceutical house

 

All guests travelling to and from the Dominican Republic are required to obtain an Electronic Ticket prior to travel. The Dominican Republic electronic portal will ask each guest a series of questions for the General Immigration Office, the General Customs Office and the Ministry of Public Health. Once completed a receipt with a QR code will be provided to present to the authorities on arrival and before departure. To control the spread of COVID 19 and contain the introduction of its variants, France has introduced different border control measures dependent on the country where the guest originates their travel and the countries the guest has been in the past 14 days prior to arriving into France.

For guests originating travel in Canada you must either have a negative COVID-19 antigen or PCR test taken at most 72 hours before departure or a COVID-19 vaccination certificate.

Children eleven years old or younger are exempt from testing.

Guests must also present a sworn statement attesting to the absence of symptoms of covid-19 infection and contact with a confirmed case of covid-19.

Effective September 12, 2021, unvaccinated guests originating travel from the United States must present a negative PCR test taken less than 72 hours before departure or a negative antigen test taken less than 48 hours before departure. In addition, the guest must also complete a sworn statement, agreeing to receive an antigen test or biological examination on arrival and agree to self-isolate for seven days.

Vaccinated guests originating travel from the United States must present proof of vaccination status and a sworn statement certifying the absence of COVID-19 symptoms and not having been in contact with a person with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

The Jamaican Government requires that all passengers travelling to Jamaica (both Jamaicans and non-nationals) must obtain a travel authorization within 72 hours of departure.

 

Guests will need to save the electronic or printed copy of the Travel Authorization for the airline agent at check-in, or when boarding your flight to confirm acceptance for travel.

In addition to obtaining a Jamaican Travel Authorization, effective 4 March 2021, all guests must have a medical certificate with a negative Coronavirus (COVID-19) antigen or PCR test result. The test must have been taken at most 3 days before departure from the first embarkation point. 

Guests younger than 12 years are exempt from the COVID-19 test requirements.

Guests traveling to and from Mexico must complete an online QUESTIONNAIRE OF IDENTIFICATION OF RISK FACTORS IN TRAVELERS. A print out of the completed questionnaire response or an electronic copy displayed from a mobile device to be presented to the Immigration officer when entering or departing Mexico.

Until 8 August 2021, guests originating travel from Canada are no longer subject to the European Entry ban.  A negative COVID 19 negative test result is no longer required, and you are not required to self quarantine upon arrival.

Effective 8 August 2021, guests age 12 years or older originating travel from Canada will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative test to travel to the Netherlands.

Guests who do not have a European Digital COVID Certificate as proof of vaccination are required to complete the Netherlands Vaccine Declaration COVID-19 form.

All guests aged 13 years or older are required to complete and sign a Health Screening Form and keep it with you for verification purposes during travel and on arrival.

All visitors 18 years and older must complete and submit an online travel registration form to receive Travel Authorization.

All travelers 5 years and over must take a Covid-19 PCR test 5 days or less before arrival in Saint Lucia and submit the negative results to the travel registration form for review and approval.

You must receive and print your travel authorization documents prior to travel. Failure to do so will result in you being denied boarding of your flight or vessel.

All arriving passengers must adhere to all protocols relevant to the island, including those related to wearing masks in public, social distancing and observing high standards of hand hygiene.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION TO ENTER ENGLAND FROM OVERSEAS

Effective October 4, 2021, guests arriving from Canada and who are fully vaccinated are no longer required to take a pre-departure COVID-19 test.

To be fully vaccinated, you must have had a complete course of an approved vaccine at least 14 days before you arrive in England.

Where 2 doses of a vaccine are required for a full course, you will be able to:

  • mix 2 different types of vaccine, for example COVISHIELD/AstraZeneca and Moderna
  • have the 2 vaccinations under 2 different approved programmes, for example Australia and Japan, UK and USA, EU and Canada
     

Before you travel to England:

If you qualify as fully vaccinated you will have to:

  • book and pay for a day 2 COVID-19 test – to be taken after arrival in England
  • complete your passenger locator form – any time in the 48 hours before you arrive in England
  • take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 after you arrive in England
     

Under the new rules, you are not required to:

  • take a pre-departure test
  • take a day 8 COVID-19 test
     

After you arrive in England you must take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2.

You do not need to quarantine unless the test result is positive.

If you will be in England for less than 2 days you still need to book and pay for a day 2 COVID-19 test. You only need to take the test if you are still in England on day 2.

You may need to self-isolate if NHS Test and Trace notifies you that you’ve been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Check the rules about NHS Test and Trace for more information.


If you are not fully vaccinated, effective October 4 you must follow these rules if you:

  • do not qualify under the fully vaccinated rules
  • are partially vaccinated
  • are not vaccinated

     

Before you travel to England you must:

  • take a pre-departure COVID-19 test – to be taken in the 3 days before you travel to England
  • book and pay for day 2 and day 8 COVID-19 tests – to be taken after arrival in England
  • complete your passenger locator form – any time in the 48 hours before you arrive in England
  •  

After you arrive in England you must:

  • quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 days
  • take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 and on or after day 8
  •  

You may be able to end quarantine early if you pay for a private COVID-19 test through the Test to Release scheme.

Flights in which someone on board later tested positive for COVID-19

The safety of our guests and crews is our top priority. It is our goal to be open and transparent throughout this rapidly evolving situation. This table will be updated regularly with information on COVID-19 impacted flights in our network.

The public health authority has jurisdiction, and a process, for notifying guests on board the flight, we are providing all necessary information as required. We have a strict process and protocol in place for notifying our crew of affected flights and are not always able to post the information in coordination with public health.

Guests in affected rows of the below flights are considered close contacts and may be at risk for exposure. Public health officials recommend that affected individuals self-isolate for 14 days after arrival and monitor symptoms. Guests are advised to contact their primary care provider, or their local public health unit if they are concerned that they may have been exposed to or are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.

All guests who were on the listed flights, but not in the affected rows are advised to self-monitor for signs of cough, fever or respiratory issues and to call their local health authorities if symptoms arise within the next 14 days.
