On the first of every July Sint Maarten celebrates Emancipation Day. This holiday commemorates the day in 1863 when slavery was abolished from the Dutch half of the island. Celebrations begin in the morning with many Sint Maarteners attending church services, followed by ceremonies involving the laying of wreaths at several monuments.
