Imagine strolling down a boardwalk and pausing to rest on a bench overlooking the Sea of Cortez after a day spent on a sun-drenched beach. A picture of peace comes to mind, and it's no wonder – we just painted a picture of a day in La Paz, Mexico. In Spanish, La Paz means peace. Basking in the tranquility of this part of Mexico will be effortless, just like everything else on your vacation.

La Paz rests in a bay on the east side of the Baja California peninsula. Amidst the barren desert that blankets the region, the city is framed by ancient laurel trees as well as date and coconut palms. The flora lies against a palette of ochre-coloured rock and the contrasting deep aqua of the Sea of Cortez makes for stunning photos.

The beaches of Mexico never disappoint and those near La Paz are no exception. Isolated spreads of sand, marked with crystal-clear water, are just a short drive outside the city's centre. Driving to some of the best shores on Baja will leave you wanting to find more oases further down the road; you can go back day after day, with a new beach following each one you pass.

The laid-back feel of La Paz mixes with its old-world architecture and leaves you yearning to explore. You will especially feel this when exploring restaurants and shops along the Malecón, the city's boardwalk. Lined with tiled walkways, a historic cathedral and plenty of public art, the Malecón invites you to become immersed in its picture-perfect culture.

Visiting La Paz you'll find adventure and serenity all in one place. The Sea of Cortez hosts some of the world's best snorkelling, fishing and whale watching. As well the city's golfing, museums, fine dining and restored colonial-era sites will only add to your vacation's variety.

You can even venture out to the desert-island of Espiritu Santo, where land and marine wildlife will keep your group ooh-ing and aah-ing all day long. Day trips to the tip of Baja (to Cabo Pulmo or Todos Santos) are also popular and will spark daydreams of future Mexican getaways.

The pristine environment of this Baja Californian nook merges with its vibrant city to give you a trip that's loaded with options. Find peace in La Paz – you won't be able to paz it up.
