When you think Florida, you probably think beaches. Sarasota offers beaches galore, but so much more.

This city on Florida's Gulf Coast offers both relaxation and adventure. If you're into the arts scene, you can see paintings at the Ringling Museum of Art, or

check out the city's offerings in architecture, opera, ballet, symphony or theatre. The Towles Court art district, one of Sarasota's historic neighbourhoods, features an abundance of brightly painted wooden homes turned into galleries, shops and restaurants.

Looking for city life? Visitors and locals alike head to Main Street to dine and shop a pedestrian-friendly area that also boasts live music and chic bars.

If outdoor adventures in nature are more your thing, plan a visit to Myakka River State Park – a huge park with airboat tours, cabin rentals, campgrounds and mile upon mile of hiking trails. Or head to Sarasota Jungle Gardens, where you can find tropical wildlife including birds, reptiles and mammals that are native to the area.

But back to the beaches. No Florida vacation is complete without a little sand, and Sarasota has a lot of it thanks to its extensive coastline lined with six islands, each of which offers a different beach experience.

Find the quintessential beach environment at top-rated Siesta Key, where you can stroll along the white-sand beach, build stunning sandcastles or simply soak up the sun. Crescent Beach, in the middle of Siesta Key, is laid back while Turtle Beach is a shell collector's paradise.

Lido Key's beaches offer more of a park atmosphere, with nature trails from the water to the pine forest, recreational options and perfect places to picnic to the sound of the crashing waves.

And of course an overview of Sarasota wouldn't be complete without a mention of Venice Beach, with its massive fishing pier, beach-side restaurants and an opportunity to find sharks' teeth among the sand and shells.

This list barely skims the surface of all Sarasota has to offer. To truly get the flavour of this getaway destination, pack your sunscreen and see it for yourself.
