Great for outdoorsy types, we think best of all Hawaiian Islands, with friendliness, water activities, scenery, laid back ! Need to go back!
Love the Big Island. Had not been there for about 7 years. Hapuna Beach and mauna Kea great!. Snuba, swimming with dolphins (wild), and night time snorkeling with Manta Rays was Incredible.! For the none water babies in the crowd the beach (Hapuna esp) was super. the problem with the Big Island is too much to get through in one week! (Driving, for some, might be an issue, but we love to drive, so did not find it cumbersome). Despite best efforts, spent too much time in the rainforest one day, and Akaka Falls, that barely got time at the volcanoes. Love that this island is still quite peaceful, not overcrowded or insane like Waikiki on Oahu, or touristy like Maui. So much to offer, esp if you are an outdoorsy type. Teenager even very happy and relaxed! And even got a great manicure. People are very friendly, relaxed here, when you try to get info, not a "dog eat dog" type of area. Amazed to find some really tiny, low key, but fabulous food, in small towns,ex, Waimea and Hawi. Not super glossy touristy appearances, but low keyed, great food, and reasonable. ( A Mexican Restaurant, in Lonely Planet book, in Hawi, best Mexican we ever had on 4 continents!). Need to get back to the Big Island ASAP, to do the volcanoes more, and get diving certified. Weather, fine, can't control it, burned even on a cloudy day. If you are not the super snobby, must have everything super glossy, type, this is the place! (although, their very up market places like Hilton Waikola and Fairmont Orchid were fabulous to appreciate and enjoy also). Can't wait to go back! (Only wish, is west Jet would go to Costa Rica also). So glad West Jet now has direct flight from Vancouver to Big Island. (Heard horrible story from Americans, no flights to Kona for 4 days when they missed their connection in honolulu, they had to fly back to LA to get to Kona). REALLY appreciate you West Jet!
Big Island Hawaii was a great family holiday destination.
This was our first time to the Big Island and we stayed at Farway villas in Waikoloa Beach Resort. There was so much to do on the island ranging from many expensive excursions to free live entertainment. This island would fit anyones budget...You can feel like a movie star our at home like a local. We used the condo for most of our meal preparations but did splurge on a steak dinner at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse....it was fantastic. Brushed shoulders with Sylvester Stallone at Mauni Lani shops and watched a free fire dancer show as well. So much to do in the 10 days we were there that there were some things we could not fit in. We would go for at least 2 weeks next time. A GREAT TRIP.
It was awseome, still some things to do, ie helicopter ride, deep sea fishing etc
My wife and ispent 2 fantastic weeks on the Big Island (and of course we flew with WestJet)we stayed at a working coffee farm ( bed & breakfast) not far from the Kona airport , we explored all over the island and basically had a blast, weather was great and we would definitely make a return visit, thank you again to West Jet and their staff, they were great
Good January escape from Edmonton winter
The journey to Kona from Edmonton is somewhat long, especially the return journey, which means night flying, rather tiresome. we had trouble finding the westjet gate to get out of Kona, as we did not have the gate # given to us at check in. The check in agent never informed us about 45 mins delay. The island was great, the hotel comfortable but could be cleaner, especially the bath room. The weather was great, a few cloudy days and a windy one, but much more desirable than Edmonton in January. Yes, we would go back.
Kona was a place to explore by car.
The weather was good for 50% of the trip. I found that in order to see things that a car was necessary even if you ended up on a tour of some kind (not a lot of pick-ups at the hotels) and the car could not be booked once arrived. All the rental agencies were at the airport. You need to book ahead which was frustrating. The beaches are a lengthy drive away which was disappointing. I have many other sights to see but would go back once I have seen the rest of the world. I also would have liked to see more emphasis on the culture and not just the adventure part. I like to hear and see the history. In order to see the volcano, it was quite a distance and the lava flows would have only been visible from the air or by ocean tour. Research well before you go.
The Big Island has something for every family member!
We love the diversity of Kona, The Big Island. There are many climate zones, many activities to take part in, and the slow, more rural pace of the island suits us perfectly. We discovered Spencer's Park Beach this trip and found the snorkeling was good, the beach was excellent and there was no crowding. The facilities were excellent and many people took advantage of the camping spots. We also appreciated the welcoming attitude of the local people all over the Big Island. Although there were cloudy times, we came back sporting nice tans after only a week. This was our fourth trip to the Big Island and we are definitely going back. We have not finished exploring all the nooks and crannies!
Loved it loved it Loved it! Tottally happy with the whole island, accomodations and dining. I will return again for sure. Thanks Westjet. you didn't let me down!
If you want to relax, refresh and revitalize this is the place to come - Awesome
We have been to Hawaii before but never the big island. What a wonderful relaxed place to spend time. It has a much slower pace but this is exactly what we were looking for. The contrast between the various landscapes is incredible. You can drive an hour and go from moonscape to rainforest. The people are friendly and welcoming - well worth the trip.
The Big island is a great adventure holiday location
I have been to the Big Island three times over the last 8 years and it never dissapoints. I think it is one of the most magical places on the planet, with the extreme diversity in landscape and beauty. The beaches are unbeleivable and everytime I go I take the around the island tour. The drivers are amazing and I learn something new each time. It is a very relaxing island also compared to Honolulu on Oahu. The people are very friendly and the artist community is also quite diverse and very talented. I dream about going there all the time.
a no hassel relaxing place to go..
Loved the Island so different from the others... Kona brewery had the best food and BEER!! and Staff. Also loved night swim with the Mantas!!
We stayed at the Fairmont for the entire week. Awesome hotel..would definitely recommend it. The beach wasn't too too busy... so that was a treat. We did a day trip to see the volcano.. it was fantastic for a day trip... would recommend it. We did miss out seeing downtown Kona...but apparently if you swim there you can swim with the dolphins..for free.. in the wild!
taking a stroll in Kahalua
We loved the Big Island. We went to a street fair, the street was closed it was great. we also ate in about every resturant. Loved a sunset and drinks at Huggo's On The Beach. with our toes in the sand good service ..good drinks and fantastic food and sunset. April was perfect. Every sunset was fantastic! Also the church was neat and the huge tree.
Kahaluu park in Kona has some of the best snorkeling. This is where I first got my feet wet and fell in love with snorkeling. Turtles are everywhere there and lots of tropical fish. Excellent for families and there is a lifeguard, which can be comforting for some newbies.
Love the Big Island
This is such a great place to bring the family. There are so many beaches to explore and the water is beautiful and refreshing. We have had great customer care experiences and all round enjoyable time when there. WestJet is our preferred carrier, as the staff are consistently welcoming, friendly and assistive.
Swim with Dolphins
We were sitting at the Kona Inn eating when I first spotted the fins of a pod out in the harbour. We were just paying for our bill so I ran to get my swimsuit on while my husband paid and grabbed our snorkel and fins from the rent-a-car. (Always a good idea to have them in trunk for such a time as this). We went out to the edge of the rocks and dove in. The pod was moving but if we remained still they would come swimming beneath us or beside us. It is such an incredible feeling to see them, a definate highlight to any vacation.
Kona is very different from maui. We rented a car and visited coffee plantations. and the different topograohy. It was very laided back and we didn't everything we wanted to. So we need to go back! loved the dinner we had at the Kona brewery and grill. but the last day we had Hawaiian BBQ..loved it..everyone was so nice but the best was my night swim to see the Manta rays.....
The Painted Church
The history of the Church in the District began early in 1842 (1). Father Joachim Marechal, SS.CC., at that time was assigned to care for both South Kona and Ka'u Districts. He set his residence and first chapel in the village of Kapalelua, situated on the border of the two Districts. Within a short time, due to Father Joachim's zeal and zealous work and teaching of several lay catechists, the Church was firmly established in South Kona. The first Catholic school in the area opened at Honaunau beach village under the care of Serapia, a catechist, and Clement Hoki, a school teacher, the missionary priests lived in South Kona only intermittently until about 1859. The original chapel, located on the shore of Honaunau Bay Dear the City of Refuge in the National Historical Park, was known as St. Francis Regis Chapel. A great little side trip.
Kona, Big Island
We spent 16 amazing days on the island exploring everything from sunny days at Hapuna Beach to a cool, rainy day at the volcano. Explored Hilo, but would highly recommend more than one night there. Hilo had an amazing old town feel and there were lots of beautiful waterfalls, botanical gardens, and hot pools to explore in the area. All in all, I would hightly recommend the Big Island for a family vacation.
Beautiful Sunset to a fabulous 2 weeks
It was awesome to watch the turtles and fish below the restaurant. Our tour closed relaxing on the beach chaise watching a local fisherman cast his net into the setting sun.
Fools in Paradise ....
The Big Island is a study in contrasts. Here we explored magnificant waterfalls (a la Fantasy Island), green, lush landscapes, and stunning mountain vistas. Jump into your rental, and in no time at all you can be in a coffee plantation, walking on a LIVE volcano, driving down a deserted road with views that defy description, or snorkelling amoungst fish and coral so vibrant and colourful that I felt like I was in another world altogether! WOW! We felt like we had found one of the world's truly special places. And, when we "talked story" with the local residents, we came to understand just what ALOHA actually means .. kindness and caring, and a simple love of life. We have been many places, and have never seen anything like this little piece of paradise ....
