How we support
There were more than 31,000 children reported missing in Canada in 2020 and in nearly all of those cases police reached out for help to bring those children back to safety. The Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) is a key resource for police, acting as their voice in the community by distributing important information to phones, tablets and computers of the public through its innovative technology, helping with investigations and also working to support the families in crisis. MCSC also collaborates with business partners who bring their unique skills and assets into the search for missing children.
Since 2004, WestJet has helped the Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) continue the search for missing children in some of the following ways:
- By providing the gift of flight, allowing MCSC investigators to travel to the frontline of an investigation and conduct hands-on search activities.
- By supporting family reunifications and ensuring that every missing child has a way home.
- By participating as Digital volunteers in The Child Search Network, standing ready to help return a missing child to a safe environment. Wherever WestJetters are in the country, they are able through a mobile app to have instant access to information about missing children in that area and receive geo-targeted SMS Alerts issued by Police.
- By volunteering at MCSC events such as the annual "Raise Hope" Gala held every May leading up to National Missing Children's Day on May 25th. In 2017, WestJet Volunteers dedicated 108 hours of their time!
Initiatives
On May 25, 2016, International Missing Children’s Day, WestJet encouraged WestJetters and our guests to help grow MCSC’s Most Valuable Network by 45,000 – one new user for each reported missing child. To achieve this, we promoted the Most Valuable Network on channels and asked WestJetters to have conversations and make announcements to invite our guests to join the network. As a result, WestJet’s call to action proved not only to be incredibly successful, but it now holds the record for being the single largest one-day increase of donated feeds to the MVN since its launch in 2012. The impact of this increase of donated feeds is that an additional 760,000 eyes and ears in the community are ready and willing to assist in finding a missing child.
About Missing Children Society of Canada
The Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) exists to help return missing children to a safe environment. The organization that was established in 1986 has evolved from one distributing posters to find a missing child, to one embracing the latest technology to help police in the search for that child. MCSC also reaches out to enlist the help of other professionals in the search and location of missing children in addition to working with traditional media and online/social media to bring public awareness to cases of missing kids.
The Missing Children Society of Canada provides affected families with knowledge and resources throughout the search and reunification, while ensuring that all its programs are free, so that all families in need of help receive it, regardless of their financial situation. The Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) has an in-house team of former police investigators who work with federal and municipal police departments as well as international police in the search for missing children. MCSC supports police in investigating stranger abductions, parental abductions, disappearances, and endangered youth cases.
