Mediocre Resort -3 star

Jimmy P on May 19, 2024

Let me start by saying I paid $1970 for the week for 2 adults and 1 child so my expectations were equivalent to what I paid. Didn’t have a bad time, but just simply wouldn’t recommend spending money on this resort. Normally stay at Moon palace and have stayed at the Grand Palladium Jamaica which was amazing. For that reason of loving their other resort, we figured we would give this a shot. Our group was 7 total, Arriving here after an hour ride in the $170 private transportation which was a van from like 1990, we stood in line for about 20mins waiting for the 1 receptionist to check us in. No arrival drinks, towel to wash hands, just check in, ok no big deal. Building 52 for a garden view, room was honestly decent other than the nightly sewage smell that really hits hard. Room was clean, no complaints other than the smell, I assume the sewage system is nearby? No joke it smelled like someone took a dump in the air vents and it just blew all night. Some days like sewage, some days like rotting garbage. Almost like a rotten fruit stand in the heat. I did read TONS of reviews on the Facebook group of cleaning people stealing from safes so I brought locking bags and kept my belongings in my locked suitcase, no issues because of this but I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving cash or goods in the safe. Trying to get reservations is next to impossible unless you want to eat at 9pm daily, so trick is to just walk up to a restaurant and hand the waiter some cash for a table. The food all together every where is mediocre, not terrible but not really the best, it’s like eating at your local Chili’s for the week. Buffet was decent selection but often ran out of food fast. Cleanliness-Be prepared for tons of iguanas that use the bathroom everywhere and apparently can bite, which is annoying as they overtake the walking paths. The whole resort seems dirty, like animal droppings everywhere, no floor scrubbers just occasionally saw a mop. No joke there was a sugar packet by the pool that sat in the same spot for 5 days before disappearing, they never clean. Garbage all near the pool, small debris really but nobody cleans anything. Concierge desk was soiled in green droppings, everywhere was just covered in literal poo. Men’s restrooms by the entrance was super nice but the rest were dirty, poorly lit, and made no sense as the urinals were on top of each other so no privacy, and the stalls you have to like stand on or against the toilet to open and close doors so your legs can touch the dirty bowl. Safety wise-I didn’t feel unsafe but I also didn’t see one security guard. In Jamaica they had security on every corner and people walking. I’m a 33yr old male so I’m fine but if I was a female I would be a little more on edge. I did notice one night a “local” young male stare at my watch and necklace while waiting for the shuttle and take a shuttle back with me, then get off and proceed to follow me which I changed directions and he went his separate way. Could it have been coincidence, absolutely but I’m from New York and we don’t trust anyone. With that being said I did remove jewelry the remainder of the trip. I wouldn’t let my wife walk alone here at night. Poorly lit and all forest. Beach was non existent due to the seaweed problem, picture 4-5ft wide and 2ft high mounds of sea wood stretching the entire beach.i did read this prior so wasn’t expecting it to be good, just sucked that my daughter couldn’t even make a sand castle. White sands is almost like a ghost town, the same bartenders and waiters 7 days we were there, super dead on the weekdays. Go to other 2 resorts and tons of people and employees. White sands Pool is good, although the bartenders at the pool are understaffed, Daniel was great but sometimes it was just him or another guy for the 20+ waiting at pool bar. Towels would run out midday, returning towels they wouldn’t have anymore cards, no snack bars anywhere that we could find. Drinks are not really consistent, some would be strong, some would have nothing, Colonial seems to be the better resort but really crowded and the pool there was way to deep and didn’t really have shade. Shows were pretty good, staff was friendly all together. They did email us about 4 times prior to upgrade for $70 more to get a swim up room at katenah which maybe I should have done. Overall a decent vacation but I wouldn’t go back, I’d stick to Moon Palace. I would certainly go back to their Jamaica resort but I’d not recommend this resort for over $2500 as this is a 3 star at best. No shot I would pay more than that for a week here. Maybe book colonial or katenanh but white sands is a no go. Some suggestions, maybe a snack bar for those traveling with children or people who just want a quick bite to eat by the pool or such. Allow more reservations for groups.

Disappointing stay

ronschouten1962 (Vancouver, Canada) on May 18, 2024

We have stayed at the White Sands several times in the past and this resort has gone downhill. Beach is gone, no snorkelling anymore, no swimming in ocean, Beach bar closed, no access to Pool de Rocas anymore etc. Rooms are dated and furnishings are rundown. I could go on, but you get the idea. If you are thinking of staying at Grand Palladium you are better off at Colonial or Kantenah.
