Frequently asked questions

All of the following information applies to seat selection for travel on bookings with WestJet, WestJet Encore, WestJet Vacations and for group bookings unless otherwise mentioned. Travelling with one of our airline partners? Be sure to familiarize yourself with their seating options as they may differ from ours.

  • 1. Why should I select my seat before my flight's departure date?

    • Selecting your seat ahead of time gives you the peace of mind that comes with knowing you'll get the seats you want on the aircraft and you won't be separated from your family, friends or colleagues — a concern that may arise if you opt to select seats during the check-in process.

  • 2. Are there any flights where I won't be able to select a seat?

    • Seat selection is available for all WestJet operated flights booked two or more hours before scheduled departure. If your itinerary includes any flights operated by one of our airline partners you will not be able to select a seat for the partner operated portion of your travel. For charter flights, seat selection is available at airports only, as we must verify your travel documents and collect necessary information upon check-in.

  • 3. How can I select my seat?

    • If your flight qualifies for seat selection, you can select your seat at while you make your booking online or you can select your seat later during the check-in process (available 24 hours before departure) or you can contact us at any time up to two hours before departure to select your seat.

  • 4. Is there a fee for seat selection?

    • Seat fees are charged for each flight segment (each segment is identified by a different flight number) and each direction of travel for Econo and Flex fare types. Fees vary between regular seats, exit-row seats and seats in Plus.

  • 5. Can I still select my seat if I don't want to pay the fee?

    • Yes, you can select regular seats for free but only 24 hours to 60 minutes before your flight's scheduled departure, and only through web check-in and mobile check-in (some restrictions apply). Web and mobile check-in is available on all domestic and U.S. flights and may also be available for some of our international destinations. If you check in at the airport, seats will be assigned, at which point, you can make your seating request. The earlier you check in, the better the chance you'll get the seat you want.

  • 6. What's the difference between seat types?

    • Seats in Plus

      Seats in Plus

      are located in the first three rows of our 737 aircraft and have extra legroom. With the purchase of these seats you will also receive advance boarding, early access to overhead bins, and food and beverages (including beer, wine and spirits) from our on-board menu. Selections vary based on flight length, time of day and availability. WestJet reserves the right to limit alcohol service. Guests booking Plus fares have complimentary access to seats in Plus , and any remaining seats in Plus will be available for purchase by guests travelling on Econo and Flex fare types during the check-in window.

      offer additional legroom. For safety reasons you must be over the age of 16, not responsible for anyone else, able-bodied and not require the use of a seatbelt extender to sit in the emergency exit row.

      Regular seats

       Regular seats

      make up the remaining spots on our aircraft. We like to think that our seats (and the guest experience you receive in them) are much more than regular. We offer a single class on board, which means that we treat all of our guests the same, regardless of where they sit.  

      Less desirable Some of our regular seats are

      than others due to their location. These seats may have less legroom or may not have the ability to recline. These seats are identified with an 'L' if you are using our online seat selection option.

  • 7. Are seat fees refundable?

    • Seat fees are refundable up until 24 hours before flight departure, with the exception of full itinerary cancellations, where fees will be refunded up until two hours before flight departure.

  • 8. How are seats different on WestJet Encore's Q400 aircraft?

    • WestJet Encore's Q400 aircraft have a different configuration and seat pitch, and seats in Plus do not have extra legroom.

  • 9. Can I change or add a seat on an existing reservation?

    • If you have an existing reservation made through or by calling WestJet, you can select a seat by going to "Manage bookings" and entering your reservation code and last name. You can also call us at 1-888-937-8538 and we'll be happy to add a seat selection to your reservation.

  • 10. I'm changing my flight(s). What happens to the seats I've already selected?

    • You will be prompted to select new seats for any segments you are changing.

  • 11. Can I ensure I'm seated with my minor child?

    • Reserving your seats for a fee at the time of booking is the best way to ensure that you have a specific seat.

      If you are travelling with children between two and 11 years of age please select the children drop-down list for bookings made on or by letting us know if you call 1-888-937-8538 to book. If seats are available, we will automatically seat children with at least one adult on the reservation. If seats are not available at check-in time, our WestJet agent or inflight crew will do their best to accommodate seating changes at boarding.

      If you are travelling with children over the age of 11 you should consider reserving seats at the time of booking to ensure you are seated together.  If available, you may select regular seats for free but only 24 hours to 60 minutes before your flight's scheduled departure, and only through web check-in and mobile check-in (some restrictions apply).

  • 12. I have a special need – will I be seated in a designated area?

    • When you contact us for a group of 10 or more guests , just mention that you'd like to have your group seated together, and we will work with you to find the best available option.
