Food Poisoning, False Marketing, Maltreatment, & More
a1122334 on Jun 08, 2024
My friends and I experienced a number of terrible accounts during our stay at Melia. Most concerning was the treatment after I was food poisoned at Melia's Calathea restaurant. I ingested a spoiled scallop in my ceviche appetizer (which was not even a listed ingredient). Within a few hours, I was severely sick with food poisoning. To note, I did not have any alcohol or outside food during this trip. By the next morning I had fainted in the bathroom, could not keep down food, and was severely dehydrated. I was taken to the on-site medic by Meliá staff and assured, at first, by the manager that I needn’t worry about exceeding a timely checkout. The Meliá nurse, who was one of the only staff members who treated me with respect, soon encouraged me to visit the ER. However, as I approached a taxi to take me to the hospital, Meliá staff member Keren and her assistant switched their course and told me I would be charged for an extra night if I remained at the hotel much longer. Mind you, I could barely see or focus due to the severe dehydration. Keren's assistant was yelling at me saying I needed to move my stuff out of the room or pay for another night. I had already missed my flight home due to the sickness and had to spend over $1k to change my flight. Unfortunately, this maltreatment was typical of the thoughtless care we received during our entire stay. First, along with the food poisoning, the staff treated us inhospitably. The front desk staff refused to let our hotel-arranged airport van leave the hotel because they could not accept that only one of three persons staying in one room was checking out (with me staying because I was food poisoned by Meliá’s food offerings and was not well enough to fly). This guest-facing hostility is especially surprising because we speak fluent Spanish, so a language barrier is not to blame. My friends nearly missed their international flight as a result. Unfortunately, the staff animus was not limited to our departure: a man named Junior at the dining reservations desk declined to answer simple questions about the menus at each dinner option and numerous additional staff members we encountered were rude or condescending. Second, the rooms we booked were not accurately represented on the website at the time of booking. We booked two rooms for five guests directly through Melia's website, each of which featured two double beds. Upon being shown our rooms, we were surprised to see each had what appeared to be two twin beds and a small couch. Far from the plush down-covered beds depicted on their website, the mattresses were stiff and creaked with every movement. To make matters worse, they were covered by thin sheets with obvious stains. Third, along with the uncomfortable beds, brown stained bedsheets, and cockroaches in the bathrooms, all five of us experienced terrible sleep. We heard multiple men shouting outside our room and golf carts driving by with hotel staff speaking loudly between the hours of 2am and 6am. Finally, and more broadly, Meliá markets itself as a sustainable five-star wellness resort, but lacks basic wellness features. Except for a mocktail bar in the lobby, which was only serving coffee and tea while we were there, each beverage station resembled a traditional pool bar offering primarily alcoholic beverages. Aside from a salad bar, healthy, organic, or sustainable meal options were scant. And a guest lounging on Meliá’s private beach is obstructed from relaxing by music played at a high volume from boats anchored feet from shore. After raising these pervasive issues to Melia directly, they refused to remedy our situation in the slightest. They gaslit me and told me that it was not possible that their hotel caused my food poisoning. They asked me to release medical records of test results proving that I had food poisoning. The unprofessional & inhumane treatment I received from Melia was unspeakable and I truly cannot understand how or why they are well reviewed. I hope that no one has to experience what I experienced at Melia.
Beautiful hotel

Beautiful hotel, incredible food, accommodating staff. We had a wi fearful holiday and this was despite my wife falling ill and spending two days In Hospital. In this instance Ronny the duty supervisor was overwhelmingly helpful and attentive and regular checked in on how she was doing which we can’t thank him enough for. Outside of the illness we found this to be a wonderful place to stay
