Great Hotel, Very Clean, Excellent Room Service (Maria & Pamella), Super Animation(BonBon and all the team), the buffet and "A La Carte" are very good. the beach is great most of the time. Oops, and all the bar tender team are marvelous. Reccommend the Hotel
Wonderful Week at the Marien

We arrived home on December 3rd after a one week vacation at the Marien Puerto Plata. We had booked VIP Adult only and there was a glitch with our reservation but Jose in the VIP customer service was able to find us the correct room category. We thought we booked VIP ADULT, but when we arrived we discovered that we had booked the VIP but not in the adult only section. Our room was not ready, so we waited in the comfortable VIP lounge and had a couple of drinks. Within an hour, we were taken to our room in building 6. We thought that the ADULT buildings were 9 and 4 near the beach, but found out both buildings are under renovation and are not part of the resort any longer. The resort should update their maps to indicate this change. Building 6 was at the very back of the resort near the VIP lounge so it was a bit of a walk to the beach. ROOM We were in room 6319 which was nice with everything we needed. Bathroom was supplied with towels, bath and hygiene supplies, robes, slippers and the big blue beach towels were also in the room. Our fridge was stocked and re-stocked with beer and pop. We also received a bottle of champagne as VIP guests. Two large bottles of water were in the room and were replaced throughout the week. Coffee maker and supplies were also in the room and restocked everyday. The bath towels were replaced everyday and also the beach towels were replaced daily in the room. Great air conditioning as well. The only thing that could be a negative is the tiny TV and the lack of english stations. The TV is only about 30 inches...but we did not go on vacation to watch TV. BEACH Lots of chairs available every day. No need to get up at the crack of dawn. The only exception is the weekends when the entire resort was extremely busy with "local" guests. Lots of natural shade areas from all the trees on the beach. We enjoyed the drinks from the VIP bar especially the slushy Margarita drinks made in the blender. We are used to the beautiful beaches of Cayo Coco in Cuba, so the Puerto Plata beach cannot compare. This is not the fault of the resort, just mother nature. There was lots of seaweed while we were there. Also, a lot of garbage seemed to float in - bottle caps, bits of styrofoam, plastic bags, etc. Although the beach is raked by hand in the morning, these things would continue to arrive during the day. I read that there are two rivers close by and that a lot of the garbage come down the river. The bottom of ocean near the beach had rocks and bits of coral so it was a bit tricky to walk into the water. Also, the waves really stirred up the sand and it was very murky the entire week. It was quiet on the beach, no loud music at all. Also, very few vendors walking the beach. FOOD We were really impressed with the selection of food. Again, we are used to traveling to Cuba, so Dominican food is definitely better. The buffet had a great selection. We also tried the Mexican and the Brazilian restaurants. Brazilian was definitely our favourite. We tried to visit Mylos, but the wait time did not work for us. You do not make reservations but just show up and hope to get in. It doesn't always work out. The beach snack bar was good with a buffet style or you could get fresh cooked fries, burgers and hotdogs. We had lunch there everyday. STAFF Exceptional staff everywhere we went. We were always greeted with a welcome smile and everyone was very willing to help. Jose in VIP customer service was wonderful in helping us with our room. Yamiry Familie and Wilnely Almonte were very friendly and helpful with any request. ENTERTAINMENT We really did not see any shows as we are older and went back to our rooms early. There were dance events around the pool in the afternoon and we did attend the great Christmas tree lighting. POOL Beautiful and huge pool divided into three sections. We liked that you could walk in from the sloped area. Pools were very clean. Pool bar was great with seating. They could use more shaded areas around the pool. CONCLUSION Marien is a very good mid-sized, older resort. I would definitely recommend this resort.
