Prepay for bags and save. For the lowest price on up to 2 checked bags, guests are encouraged to prepay for their first and second checked bags online through Manage Trips at any time up to 24 hours before your flight as bag fees are higher when checked at the airport.

Checked baggage fees can vary based on when they are paid (during booking, through Manage Trips, or at check-in), date of purchase, fare purchased, origin airport, destination airport, duration of flight, promotional offer, day of departure, or day of return.

WestJet Rewards members without complimentary checked bag benefits can access lower fees for first checked bag(s) by adding their WestJet Rewards ID and pre-paying for bags when making a booking on WestJet.com or post booking via Manage Trips up to 24 hours prior to flight departure. The member’s WestJet Rewards ID must be attached at time of bag purchase to receive lower first checked bag pricing. Lower pricing will only apply if bag fees are pre-paid; regular pricing will apply at time of check-in online or at the airport.

Certain checked baggage fees may only be offered on WestJet managed digital self-serve tools (during booking, through manage trips or self-serve check-in) and will not be available through the WestJet Contact Centre or other channels.

When is your first bag free?

First bag fees are included for WestJet RBC^® World Elite Mastercard^‡ primary cardholders and up to 8 guests on the same booking.

First bag fees are included for EconoFlex, Premium and Business fares and Silver, Gold and Platinum WestJet Rewards members. First bag fees are also included for Econo and Member Exclusive fares to and from Asia.

Second bag fees are included for Premium and Business guests, as well as Silver, Gold, and Platinum Rewards members

Third bag fees are included for Platinum Rewards members.

Adding prepaid bags online

Prepaid checked bags can only be added on WestJet flown and operated flights. Payment is available for first and second bags only; additional bags must be added at the airport.

Service fees information

Overweight and oversized bags for all fares: $100-$118

Bag fees are charged in Canadian (CAD) or U.S. (USD) dollars, depending on the booking’s country of origin. For flights departing from outside Canada and the U.S., bag fees will be converted and charged in the local currency of the departure country. GST is charged on fees for all itineraries that originate in Canada.

Travelling with or transferring baggage to our airline partners

If you are travelling with one of our airline partners, the baggage policies of the other carrier may apply. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the fees for your journey by visiting our airline partners page. Fees are collected on a one-way basis by the airline operating the first flight for each direction of your journey.

Refunds, changes and cancellations

If your flight is cancelled: Prepaid bags will be refunded.
If you cancel your flight: Prepaid bag fees will be refunded, except with UltraBasic fares, which are non-refundable.
If you change your flight: Prepaid bags will transfer to your new flight, except with UltraBasic fares.

Priority baggage

Priority baggage means your bags will be tagged so they are among the first to the arrival carousel.

Eligible guests include:

Platinum and Gold members and their travel companions on the same reservation
Guests seated in Business or Premium

If using a self-serve bag drop station, please be sure to see a WestJet agent to have a yellow priority indicator tag added to your baggage tag(s) prior to drop off.

WestJet allows each Econo, Member Exclusive, EconoFlex, Premium, PremiumFlex, Business or BusinessFlex guest to bring one (1) carry-on bag and one (1) personal item.

Items which do not fit into the sizing device will be placed in checked baggage and applicable baggage fees may be collected.

UltraBasic carry-on baggage allowance:

WestJet allows each UltraBasic guest to bring one (1) personal item. WestJet does not allow UltraBasic guests to bring or pay for a carry-on bag except in the following cases:

UltraBasic guests travelling to and from Europe and Asia are allowed to bring one (1) carry-on bag and one (1) personal item.
UltraBasic guests are allowed to bring one (1) carry-on bag and one (1) personal item when Extended Comfort has been purchased for all flights in a single direction, including connections.

UltraBasic guests who arrive at the gate with a carry-on bag that does not meet an exception listed above will be required to check the bag and will be charged a checked bag fee and a service fee. UltraBasic guests are encouraged to prepay for checked bags online through Manage trips at any time up to 24 hours before your flight to save money.

All carry-on and personal items must:

fit in the sizing device (wheels included – if applicable)
be light enough to allow you to place the bag in the overhead compartment unaided
be stored under the seat, and carry-on items should be stored in the overhead compartment on board the aircraft
be acceptable as carry-on for the country to which you are travelling. Acceptable items vary by country. Visit catsa.gc.ca (opens in a new window) to confirm what you are able to bring before your flight as WestJet is not responsible for items not permitted through security, at your point of departure or upon arrival at your destination
pass through security. Items such as: shampoo, perfume, toothpaste and moisturizers are only permitted in limited amounts

Consolidation rules:

Duty free items must be consolidated with your fare’s carry-on bag and personal item allowance. Duty free is not allowable as an additional baggage item.
Personal electronics MUST be placed into a personal item or carry-on bag.
Food items may be brought on board for consumption during the flight. Items not consumed will be considered part of your fare’s carry-on bag and personal item allowance.

Travel with pets

When your pet flies WestJet, they're our special guests too. They may ride in the cabin or checked in with their kennel on most domestic and international flights. Details are:

One medically required wheelchair, per guest, will be carried at no extra charge.
The device must be transported in the cargo compartment.

Braces, crutches, walkers and canes, along with other assistive devices, will also be permitted free of charge.

Assistive device information

Lap-held infant

Two pieces of child/infant equipment (infant restraint system, playpen or stroller) are permitted at no charge and can be checked at the gate as you board. No substitutions, e.g. a wagon or stroller wagon, are permitted.

Fare-paying child/infant

One piece of child/infant equipment (approved restraint system (car seat), playpen or stroller) will be permitted at no charge in addition to the checked baggage allowance for the fare class booked. No substitutions, e.g. a wagon or stroller wagon, are permitted.

WestJet only allows infant and child restraint systems approved by Transport Canada or the Federal Aviation Administration to be used on board the aircraft. For details on non-acceptable and acceptable infant and child restraint systems, please see approved restraint systems (car seats).

Travelling with children

Equipment must meet the requirements for air travel and is subject to restrictions based on your destination.

The maximum length accepted for checked baggage is 9.8 Feet.

If your itinerary includes an international flight operated by one of our partner airlines, you must contact the other airline a minimum of 72 hours in advance of your travel.

Fishing and hunting equipment information

WestJet will review requests for one piece of checked baggage containing humanitarian aid (departing Canada) or return of one rescue animal (to Canada) per guest.

Request a fee waiver for humanitarian baggage

We recommend that whenever your medical equipment fits within the carry-on baggage dimensions you take it as carry-on baggage. Medication should be packed in your personal item. Although we do not charge a fee for medical equipment, most portable medical devices (PMEDs) must be approved for air travel as they contain batteries which are classified as dangerous goods.

Please review the Medical equipment and medication page well in advance of when you intend to travel to be sure these items arrive safely.

WestJet waives checked baggage fee(s)* for active or veteran Canadian military personnel.
* Note: To have your checked baggage fee(s) waived, WestJet must be the marketing and operating carrier on the entire journey.
Any military personnel travelling for business or personal reasons can do so with a maximum of four bags on WestJet flights and a maximum of three bags on WestJet Encore flights at no additional charge.

We will not charge overweight and/or oversized checked baggage fee(s), fee(s) for military personnel; however, checked baggage exceeding our maximum permitted size or weight will not be accepted as guest checked baggage and must be shipped via cargo (all applicable fees apply).

Please be aware of the following military identification we accept, and what you must produce before you board your flight:

A CFOne card with "CF" or "V"
Certificate of Service (CF 54 or CF 75) from any branch of the Canadian military
Discharge certificate from any branch of the Canadian military
DND ID card for National Defense (NDI 20)
Record of Service Card (NDI 75)
Statement of Service from any branch of the Canadian military
Valid DND temporary ID card (NDI 10)
National Association of Federal Retirees with “Canadian Armed Forces Veteran” stated on the card.

WestJet also waives the baggage fees* for active military personnel from other countries who show valid military identification.
This exemption does not extend to:

Current Department of National Defence (DND) public servants and their families
Serving and former Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and their families
Other members of first-response agencies, peace officers, etc.
Current staff of Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) and their families
Current staff of Defence Construction Canada (DCC) and their families
Current staff of Communications Securities Establishment (CSE) and their families
Honourary Colonels/Captains(N), Lieutenant Colonels/Commanders and their families
Former Staff of the Non-Public Funds, Canadian Forces with a pension and their families

Small musical instruments

Instruments that fit in an overhead bin or under the seat in front can be taken in the cabin for your flight as a carry-on item. In addition to your instrument, you will be able to bring one personal item. Guests who booked an UltraBasic fare are permitted to bring an instrument as their one (1) personal item provided it meets the personal item size requirements outlined below.

Maximum size for personal item: 41 cm x 14 cm x 33 cm (16 in. X 6 in. X 13 in.)

During the flight, your instrument must remain stowed in the overhead bin, under the seat or in other approved locations. Seats cannot be purchased for instruments.

The cabin crew may accept an irregular-sized musical instrument in the cabin and carry-on baggage is subject to space limitations, so come prepared to check your instrument if necessary.

Checking your musical instrument

You may need to check instruments that do not fit in the cabin, WestJet strongly recommends that musical instruments be in a hard-sided case and checked baggage fees will apply.

Baggage fees are charged based on fare bundle and WestJet Rewards benefits.
Your cello or xylophone may be subject to excess, overweight or oversize baggage fees.

In the event of an aircraft downgrade

Sometimes with delays due to weather or unexpected maintenance, we need to do a little juggling. So, it’s possible that the plane that you booked is not the plane you will board. When this happens and you’re on a smaller plane, we’ll provide you with options if there is not sufficient space to stow your instrument in the cabin.

Taking a guitar with you?

You will need to loosen the strings on your guitar or cello—or any stringed instrument—before you travel to reduce the risk of the headstock cracking or snapping off with the changes in temperature and pressure of air travel.

Devices with lithium batteries must receive an approval sticker at the check-in counter and be insulated with tape or packed individually in a protective bag (e.g., Ziploc bag, plastic bag, or pouch) to successfully go through security screening at ICN.
