Only stay if fluent in Spanish
Linda E on Dec 10, 2025
Do not stay at the Holiday Inn unless you are fluent in Spanish. Very few staff could speak even a bit of English. It is a hotel for Mexican families. During our stay there were approximately 10 Canadians out of over 1000 guests. The resort caters only to Mexicans. The food is almost entirely Mexican. It was filled with all families with lots of kids. By the end of the day, the swimming pools smelled of urine. The entertainment was entirely in Spanish with absolutely no English interpretation about what was going on. Juan Jose our Nexus tour operator provided by WestJet warned us about scammers and to not book with anyone else. Turned out he too, was a scammer - charged us 1200 pesos each for an excursion whereas if we had booked with Roger the tour operator located right in the Holiday Inn, he would’ve charged us 700 pesos for the exact same thing. Others at neighbouring resort were also charged 1300 pesos for the same excursion by Juan Jose. On a positive note it is a very clean property, beach was immaculate and well maintained. For being so full there were Ample beach chairs all in good condition. Air conditioning was good. Wi-Fi was excellent and strong even down the beach. Our room maid did a great job. Room was cleaned and fresh towels done promptly and daily. Each day she made us a unique animal towel arrangement. The food was all Mexican dishes. We had to always ask for a knife, butter, salt and pepper. The waiter service in the buffet restaurants was not very good. They preferred to chat amongst themselves rather than offer service. We did finally find a great waiter, Adolf that served drinks on the beach and he spoke excellent English. It seemed that only the Canadian guests left tips. The ocean has strong riptides and waves. Great for walking on the beach, but very dangerous to swim in. The driver on our excursion actually told us that when we went home, we needed to write a review, telling Canadians not to stay at this hotel, but to go to any of the other resorts nearby.
Do not believe the hype

Not at all what I expected. Others must have a very low bar for what they accept as “fantastic” hotel! The hotel is old and tired. Almost 60 years to be exact. They’ve managed to put some lipstick on it to make it appear new but it’s easy to see its age showing through. It smells like sewer there are line ups for everything from food to drinks to beach towels. It’s over crowded and I would never swim in the pool with all the kids. The good is the amazing beach and the staff. The staff go out of their way to assist.
