Great Little Resort For Families with Older Children

Just spent a week (in April) at Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya. We traveled as a family of three (two adults, one toddler, who is almost 3). Although it was a nice trip, I wouldn't recommend this resort for anyone with children under the age of 3. One reason we chose this resort is because the reviews raved that it was extremely family friendly. Granted, the staff were fantastic and extremely friendly with our whole family, but the resort lacked the normal amenities we look for when we book family friendly resorts. For one, there was no live entertainment that was dedicated to young children. The live shows generally didn't start until 8:30pm. Although the shows were well done, the start time is a bit late for many families. There was also no playground or dedicated children's waterpark that was accessible at any time. There was a children's pool attached to the main pool, which was nice as it was shallow, but it didn't have any slides. The only children's pool with a slide was part of the kids club, and could only be accessed with a parent between 1-2pm. Which brings me to the issue we had with the kids club. Before booking this resort, we were aware that the age restriction for the kids club was 3-12. That said, our son is one month away from being 3, he's potty trained and he knows how to talk. We figured if his preschool at home allowed him to start months earlier, a kids club at a resort wouldn't have any issues, and if they did, we could at least stay at the kids club with him. We were wrong. The kids club attendant was adamant that he must be three years old to enter; and we can't go in with him. After a conversation with the manager, Andrea (who was fantastic and we have only good things to say about her), our son was allowed to spend an hour at the kids club, to try it out. Our son did well, however, he told us he didn't enjoy it. He said all they did was watch Bluey and he didn't get to play with any toys, which was disappointing to hear. If I was going to give my kid screentime, I would do it on my own accord. After that experience, we didn't attempt to use the kids club again. That said, we did hear positive reviews about the kids club from guests with older children (5 and up). There was a night that the kids club had a bouncy castle at the beach which our son absolutely loved. The only issue with it was that there was no ladder for little ones to climb to go down the slide. Bigger children had to help our son get to the top of the slide, so he could go down it. Which reiterates my point that the children's amenities are great for kids who are out of the toddler stage. As for the rest of the resort: the food and drinks were great. We loved that there were options for both no matter what time of day it was. For the last few days of our trip, we decided to upgrade from our basic room to the master suite on the Preferred side. The upgrade was worth it. Our room had the most stunning view with an amazing wrap around balcony. The upgrade meant that we got to have breakfast and lunch at the restaurant on the Preferred side (as well as access to a small buffet outside our room and another bar). The sit down breakfast was superb. We even got to enjoy freshly squeezed orange juice. This was probably the highlight of our trip. The other advantage to the Preferred club was that we were always able to get a seat by the pool on that side; although the resort wasn't busy, it was very hard to get a lounge chair by the pool unless you reserved it really early. We didn't have as much trouble by the beach though. All in all, it was a nice trip thanks to the wonderful staff (seriously, everyone there works extremely hard and they're all very nice, even taking the time to remember our names), great food, great drinks and a nice beach. But, I wouldn't recommend it for families with young children. Maybe we'll visit again when our toddler is older. Side note about transportation: we booked private transportation on the way to the resort due to other reviews stating travel to the resort was long. With private, it took about an hour to get to the resort. We took the pre-booked Nexus tours transportation on the way back. It took almost 2 hours.

Amazing holiday! The staff were friendly and accommodating. The room and hotel was spotless. Always plenty of sun beds and clean towels. We upgraded to the preferred swim up room and we were still able to get in on all the action around the pool. Loved the pool activities every day and the general vibes. Big shout out to the entertainment staff, Javier, Piero, Sebastian, Karla and Esveydi who were amazing and made our time fun! There was always plenty to do and always space to eat in all the restaurants. I would go back tomorrow!
