Poor first experience of Halifax

Prpeach (New Brunswick, Canada) on Apr 18, 2024

I stayed with a friend in this hotel for 3 nights. The room was not very clean but there were food remnants found that were not ours. The patio was a nice area but not much of a view. Was hoping to check out the rooftop area but it was closed unfortunately. The coffee machine in the room was dirty with a used filter in it. The bathroom was not very clean and had hair all in the shower and around the sink. The toilet clogged and there was no plunger in the room, we let the front desk know as we went out for the day and they resolved the issue. We did experience a bug bite of some sort which is alarming, especially in winter. Very expensive at $600 for having these types of issues with the cleanliness. I try to always stay with Marriot but will not be back to this one. Not a great stay for my first time in the province unfortunately. More than two coffees were not provided and had to be purchased from their Bistro.

Location!

Our family visited this Courtyard by Marriott Halifax for a family trip in November 2023. We stayed for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We liked the pool and hot tub but more importantly the location. You are footsteps from the harbour and all the fun stuff to see and do. I enjoyed the balcony for a view of Halifax and to smell the salty air. The two queen beds were comfortable and I liked having a fridge so we could buy some food to keep us fed. The bathrooms were updated and had everything you'd need. There is a garden but we visited in November so it was closed for the season but I'm sure it's lovely too.

Start Here for a grand long weekend in Halifax and the South Shore

Rent a car. Stay at the Courtyard Marriott - 5120 Salter St. Excellent location; ask for a harbour view room. For a lovely lunch go to Red Stag in old Keith’s brewery building very close by. Deep-fried pepperoni (ingenious) with a cold Keith’s. Then wander around Dalhousie campus next door, then head down to the Historic Properties. With luck the Privateers’ Warehouse is open. This is very old Halifax…as in, you’re having a beer in a 1700’s pirates lair. Same day or next day, go back up and over to Argyle Street. Two stops: the Five Fisherman (just up Duke, and one block in on Argyle) for Happy Hour - half dozen oysters and glass of wine for $17.. You then have to see the Economy Shoe Store - just down the street. This is a very cool bistro. Dinner: head to McKelvie’s Delishes Fishes. 1680 Lower Water Street (close to hotel) or The Press Gang 5218 Prince St, Halifax · 902-423-8816 Both absolutely fabulous. In the morning, you are close to the Citadel so you must wander up and see the view from top of the hill. Look down to the harbour and remind yourself of the gigantic explosion in 1918 which took out most of the city. Look over at Wolf Island. Imagine German uboats actually entering the harbour unseen. Take a drive down to Peggy’s Cove. Not far, less than an hour, and stand out on the rocks by the Lighthouse. Stay back from the water. The restaurant Sou'Wester is about as touristy as you can get but the lobster roll is very good. And it’s a great way to idle your time looking out over the Cove, especially if it’s a nasty day outside. On the way out, look for the Swissair 111 memorial. It’s chilling to look out over the water and imagine so many people perishing in a violent plane crash just off the coast. The next day take a drive to Lunenberg - two hours max - so very pretty and charming. You can see the Bluenose, and just up the Main Street to the east there is the terrific Ironworks Distillery. Expensive liquor but the vodka and the gin were just amazing.

Great view and location

Get yourself a harbour view room and you will not be disappointed. Great location, you can walk to almost anything from the hotel. Rooftop balcony is a nice place for a drink anytime of the day. I have stayed here a few times and always enjoy it.

A brief but wonderful stay!

I booked a week to celebrate my 50th birthday and the location was a fantastic foundation for my introduction to Halifax. Being right next door to the waterfront enhanced my stay immeasurably. The swimming pool was a welcome addition and added to the overall comfort of the location.
