Average, thank goodness it's being taken over!

Natalie868 (London, United Kingdom) on May 18, 2024

Overall had a nice time, but there were a lot of things that should have been better. This hotel is not for you if you want good comfort and great service. I think the varying reviews are not only because everyone is different, but I honestly believe people's experiences at this hotel and the service you receive is affected based on who you are and where you're from!!! Yes, I said it!! It's located in a good position and is perfect for spending time on the beach and in the pool, or for a simple place to stay as a base when visiting Jamaica. Lovely shallow clear water too. But despite being in a great setting, I still feel hotel and service could be SO much better. The hotel is dated yes, and that's ok, have stayed in many older places which are wonderful. But this hotel is getting to a point where its showing signs of needing attention and some serious love. It's recently been sold, which is perhaps why it’s the way it is currently and I can only hope the takeover will bring the hotel much needed improvement. Whilst it didn't ruin my trip, some things were broken or in poor condition such as the lift/elevator, as only one worked and it was rickety. The TV in the room did not work, phone didn't work, couch in the room was extremely stained and dirty and is ready for the tip. The one occasion I tried to sit on it, it felt like it had years of sweat and suncream embedded in it. But having said that, the room served its purpose, and was generally ok. As for service, all staff worked incredibly hard. Some were really run off their feet, and I really felt for them. Several staff were very nice, but the majority seemed overworked and not all particularly hospitable. Many were stressed out, unhappy, and in some cases seemed like they didn't want you there. It was also clear that some staff were reluctant to serve you or be friendly if they weren't being tipped. Hotel was generally very clean, restaurant cleaned and tables cleared as quickly as they could, but sometimes dining was a bit chaotic or you had to wait for a table. It was also a real shame to see guests leaving some areas in a bad state, with piles of wasted food on tables and on the floor. Staff did their best to keep up with this. The food was ok but average, as I had hoped for more authentic flavours. Some dishes not great, others were really nice, loved the soups, enjoyed many of the chicken and fish dishes. Food from the jerk hut, as well as the burgers and snacks from the snack bar were also a nice option for lunch time. Entertainment ok and mostly enjoyable, just as expected and most of the evening shows were visiting acts. Overall: Had a nice holiday, enjoyed the beach, liked the music playing around the hotel. It's fine for those travelling on a budget wanting a simple place to stay, but even on a budget you still expect working facilities and service that doesn't make you feel unwelcome! I'm sorry to say I would not go back to this hotel purely based on the service and feeling like an inconvenience to staff. I've been to other places in Jamaica and across the Caribbean that were so much better, that had amazing staff and were so much more enjoyable. I just know how much better it could be. Hopefully the new owners will bring it up to a higher standard.

More like a b&b and poor service from TUI rep

T C on May 18, 2024

The hotel is very run down and more like a 1/2 star B&B, we asked to be moved and was told it would be extra, we complained about the to not working they then gave us a freesat box surly that should be standard. The TUI rep (Karen) was not helpful at all and had no urgency to resolve issues we had to pay twice for an excursion due to the lack of need to resolve the initial booking, Jamaica is a lovely y place just don’t book the holiday inn, although we was told is being closed to be refurbished as it’s under new management as of next month, one lift working so as you can image a long weight at times to get to your room unless you use the stairs up the other end, also dirty hair dryer and rusting, bathroom needs re-sealing and the most noisiest air-con unit
