Melia experience

We really enjoyed going to this resort. It was a beautiful resort very big. Great for couples and mature adults. The housekeeping staff was very nice. The waiters and bartenders were all great, except for one night at the Safari bar. There was one named Franklin and we had an unpleasant experience, watching him with a knife in his hand. Look like he was threatening another employee. Thankfully, the other employee walked away, and the situation did not escalate. But I did not feel safe after that night. Beach was so beautiful and amazing all the pools were clean and clear. The food was outstanding and the drinks were wonderful.
Gorgeous resort, experience doesn’t live up to the vibe

The resort itself was absolutely gorgeous, but some of the experience left much to be desired. Pros: - Staff was very friendly and kind. Special shout out to Christian at the beach, Rebeca at the front desk and Maribel at the Barefoot Bar. - Room was spacious and modern (note that since they were overbooked we did get upgraded to one of the Level rooms that had been recently renovated) - grounds were beautifully kept with plenty of gorgeous plants, wildlife and spaces to relax. - pools were large and kept fairly clean. - lots of nice, well-planned, unique activities onsite each day. Cons: - The employees were very kind, but it seemed they all only knew about their specific job and nothing else. Need to book a reservation for dinner? Have to do that separate from the front desk. Want to book a bed on the beach? Someone else has to help with that. Interested in renting a bike? Someone else specifically for that. There’s no one stop shop for everything unless you’re paying for the Level upgrade, in which you do get a concierge. We did this for the last few days of our stay and while he was helpful at times, he was also unresponsive at others. On the morning we left he sent us all kinds of info that would’ve been great to have earlier in the trip. The resort is also so expansive that having to go to one side for one thing and another side for another is time consuming and tiring. There are shuttles, but they are often full and don’t run often enough. - There are nowhere near enough chairs by the pool or beach for all guests. Some other patrons told us they were getting up at 6am just to reserve a seat. It was clear people were leaving their towels for hours at a time just to reserve a spot without ever actually coming back to it. There are beds on the beach that are an additional fee, which we ended up doing one day simply because we didn’t want to have to continue getting up SO early just to potentially get a chair. - The beach itself is nice enough but there is tons of seaweed and if you are on the beach you will CONSTANTLY be harassed by people trying to sell you things. They do not take no for an answer and are incredibly rude when you say no. On the first day, someone asked about booking an excursion for us. We’d just arrived and weren’t quite ready. Several days later, we booked through the contact at the hotel as that seemed safest. Later that day, the person who approached us on our first day came up to me literally yelling that he came to us first and we should’ve booked with him. It was uncomfortable, unpleasant and the staff and security from the resort were right there and did nothing. Because of that, we didn’t return to the beach for the rest of the trip. We paid enough to be there for the trip to relax and it was very frustrating to be constantly approached by these folks. While they are not employed by the hotel, the resort itself does also have people who attempt to get you to sit through a presentation for their vacation package to get a free meal or massage. We declined and were still approached by this man every day, to the point where we were actively avoiding him. We don’t often take special all inclusive trips like this, so trying to be upsold just put a bad taste in our mouths, like we hadn’t already spent enough. - Food at the buffet was expansive but repetitive. The sit down restaurants were incredibly slow at service and food was bland. They made it seem like it was very difficult to get a reservation but it was almost always empty on the nights we did go. - WiFi was barely usable, which was fine except they want you to do a lot through their app which was essentially impossible without service. - we don’t drink alcohol and were looking for somewhere quiet - figured the wellness vibe would fit the mark, especially since we were explicitly told in an email that the pools were quiet. However, there was plenty of loud music at the pool, no one could seem to believe we wanted alcohol free drinks even though we noted this in the form we filled out ahead of our stay. And plenty of VERY drunk people in the pool - not the fault of the resort, and if that’s your vibe, you’ll enjoy that! Just wasn’t what we specifically felt we’d been told or were aiming for. Ultimately, the scenery and resort itself were 5/5, but there were definitely some improvements that could be made to the overall experience - it just didn’t match up with the luxury the resort was trying to give off by the look.
