Don’t Bother with the “Luxury” Upgrade
Carolyn S on Jun 14, 2025
We paid $290 American per night for this room which was labeled a “luxury room” which it certainly is not. That is almost $400 Canadian. It is a tiny room that is completely nondescript. Disappointing, don’t fall for the upgrade.
Disappointing Stay at Fairmont Royal York — Not the Luxury Experience We Paid For
Fearless67222532004 on Jun 14, 2025
We stayed at the Fairmont Royal York (Toronto) from June 12–14 as part of a package booked through Delta Vacations, and unfortunately, our experience was far from the luxury standard we expected. Upon arrival, we were asked for a 400 CAD incidental deposit, which is significantly higher than at most comparable hotels. After expressing concern, it was reduced to 200 CAD—but with restrictions: we could not use the minibar or charge anything to the room. This felt excessive and unwelcoming. Things continued to decline. WiFi was not complimentary, which is shocking for a luxury property. We were told free WiFi was only available to guests who booked directly. We signed up for their free loyalty program (as a sign suggested), but were still denied access. It felt like a bait-and-switch tactic. In our room, there was a sign stating we could call the front desk to request a fridge for personal items, since the in-room fridge was fully stocked. When we did so, we were told it would cost $25 to deliver a fridge to our room. Again, something we’ve never encountered at any other hotel. The most serious issue was a sewage smell coming from the bathroom. We reported it multiple times—first to housekeeping, then to the front desk—yet no one resolved it. Maintenance only sprayed air freshener, which did nothing to help. The smell became unbearable. After repeated calls, we were finally moved to another room, but only late in the evening on our second night. At checkout, we were told our stay had not been fully paid, despite our prepaid Delta Vacations package. Unable to access our booking details due to poor service in the lobby, I was told I could use the “complimentary WiFi”—an ironic and insulting offer after being denied it for two days. We were charged 361.11 CAD on the spot just to move forward and catch our flight. After calling Delta, they confirmed our stay was indeed fully prepaid—Fairmont had simply failed to process the payment correctly. While we were promised a refund, the responsibility to follow up now falls on us. This trip was supposed to be relaxing, but instead it was stressful and frustrating from beginning to end. From the lack of basic amenities, to poor communication, unexpected charges, and indifference from staff, this was not a luxury experience. We left deeply disappointed and will not be returning.
