Would stay again

StepanieAZ (San Francisco, California) on Jun 07, 2024

We were very happy with our stay at the Fairmont. We usually stay at very small, boutique hotels. When we first got there I thought maybe it was going to be too crowded for my liking but I was pleasantly surprised. We went for a holiday weekend and while it was very busy, we still felt that we had great access to all the amenities. We stayed a couple extra days after the holiday and it felt like we had the whole pool area to ourselves. The pool and beach areas are great with great food and beverage service (get the Lava Flow cocktails). We reserved the beach cabanas one day and we felt the service was well worth it. It was such a treat to have amazing snorkeling just right outside your hotel - all kinds of sea life can be spotted. There is also a fantastic walking/running trail that goes either direction of the hotel that I would highly recommend doing one morning - it was about 8 miles in total (maybe longer). The gym was great and never busy. The food was hit and miss, but I think that is to be expected at many Hawaii hotels (I feel like their lunch was the best out of their meal service options). I've read some complaints about the rooms not being a true ocean view - we did have a similar experience. From the room, you could only see the pool but when we walked out to the lanai we had a full ocean view. For like 30 seconds I was frustrated but then realized we're Hawaii, who wants to be in the hotel room anyways so we found ourselves using the lanai often and it was perfect. Would highly recommend this hotel! We booked with Costco Travel and got a very good rate.

Infection from hot tub

Sightseer15725290022 on Jun 07, 2024

We have visited this property as a family yearly since 2017 and we have made so many wonderful memories there, this trip was not one of them. The service and attention to detail has declined over the years but I am writing this review to help protect other visitors from getting sick. We were infected with pseudomonas folliculitis from the hot tub. During our stay, the hot tub was closed for a half day and I asked the staff why. They informed me it was because of a smell that needed to be eliminated and that it was safe. The next morning the hot tub was open. Again, I asked if it was OK to use because the water was cloudy but they said it was safe. It was NOT. My two daughters and myself got a painful rash everywhere our swimsuits covered us. My wife did not use the hot tub and thankfully did not suffer the same fate as us. When we returned home we visited the doctor who diagnosed us with hot tub folliculitis that was secondary to a pseudomonas infection. I immediately called the hotel and asked to speak to the manager on duty and I was told that I could not speak to the manager but must talk with security. I did this, gave the report and security called me back three times for details about the incident. I asked if the hot tub was closed so that other visitors would not contract the same disease but this was never confirmed. I never received a call from someone saying they fixed the problem or even to see how we were doing. (The answer is not well. The rash is painful and beginning to leave pigmented scars) I can not imagine any hotel not following up on guests that contracted an infection from their facilities and that is very upsetting. But my main concern is that the problem has been resolved so this painful, disfiguring and serious infection does not happen to other guests. If not resolved I hope alert guests to avoid the hot tub.
