This place barely satisfies the 4-star criteria in terms of service and amenities (most noticeably at the bar - it's baffling that there is only one bartender at each of the two bars, sometimes only one open at a time, and patrons regularly have to line up) but it's very pretty, clean and compact. There are only a few beach chairs and not much sandy space directly in front of the resort, but the beach walking is unparalleled. There's a scenic, rocky route full of neat tidepools walking north, and an expansive sandy, flat and nearly empty beach to the south - and no beach hawkers. We booked through an Air Canada Vacations sale that made the price almost comparable to a 4-star AI in Mexico or DR, so that brought up its value. At regular price it would've been a little disappointing, as there's not much beyond the location to warrant the higher price. But if you are looking for a basic AI in Costa Rica that's close to a fun town with lots of restaurants and bars (albeit touristy and pricy), you can't do any better.

Johan is the best. The atmosphere and location is great. The rooms are comfortable and clean. A great value for your money. We didn’t have any problems with noise but we were on the top floor. Great spa and amenities and amazing staff

We normally stay at the Occidentals in Cancun, when vacationing in Mexico. From those experiences, we decided on Occidental in Liberia, CR. On arrival, we were surprised at the appearance and the inexperienced frontend staff, the smallness of the resort. The room was comfortable and adequate. Our main disappointment with the resort was the foodservice. The buffet was well inadequate, lack proper preparation, variety and taste. The buffet was suppose to be open, for breakfast until 10AM, but lack any food after 9AM, for lunch until 3PM, but lack any food after 2PM, for dinner, but lack food after 9PM. There was not real variety of what was served at each meal service. When we go to an all-inclusive, we expect that the food would be plentiful, delicious, be of various cooking styles. The snack bar served food purported to be hamburgers and hotdogs. The hamburger patty was shaped into a sausage patty and it tasted like sausage. The hotdog appeared to be made of the cheapest ingredients and was so small. The french fries were what we consider to be #2 grade, CHEAP pricing. We had feeling of being in a Budget Hotel, not a 3 star resort. We will reconsider going to any Occidental Resorts.

I loved the natural beauty of this resort. The food was ok, the Japanese restaurant was great! I wish we could have more ala carte dinners. Like maybe every other night or every night. But, town is so close that it was nice to go out to eat in town as well. It was a 5.00 or less uber ride to town. We saw monkeys right in town. The beach at the hotel had this natural beauty. With rocks and had pools of water in between rocks that you could swim in without waves. I loved watching the surfers. The teens got to learn to surf in Tamarindo for like 40.00 ! They had a blast! Everyone was friendly at the resort and were very flexible - not too many rules! It was a very relaxing vacation. We felt safe all the time!
