Look for another hotel!

My husband and I came to Costa Rica to celebrate my birthday. We chose Occidental Tamarindo based on the reviews and location. CHECK IN: The front desk checked us in and gave us a bracelet that would cost $100 USD if lost. Typically when you check in, the staff will advise you on where the room is, elevators are located, location of pool and buffet, etc. This was not the case and we had to ask or find on our own. ROOM: We were in building 1, near the pool and lobby. It had a nice view of the pool and partial ocean view. The design of the room was cute, but in need of an upgrade. You only get two towels in the bathroom so ladies bring a hair towel! The bed is VERY hard. We woke up every morning with back pain. There is a mini bar refilled daily, but they only give you two 16oz bottles of water. It certainly is not enough to stay hydrated in that climate. The room was cleaned very late in the day (3pm or later) and it was basic cleaning - making the bed and providing new towels. They did not sweep the floor. We were also given a dirty comforter which I folded so housekeeping could see it, but they did not change it. They really need to do a deep cleaning in the rooms so it can be maintained. Also, the curtains are sheer and you will wake up at 5:30am every morning with the sunlight. There are heavier curtains but they do not extend to cover the doors. TIP: use pool towel clips to extend the heavier curtains to provide more coverage - we learned this on Day 3! FOOD/DRINK: Absolutely the worse food and drinks I have had at an all-inclusive resort, and we travel three times a year. The buffet consisted of rice, beans, plantains, quesadillas, and potatoes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. At times they would add a few items like pasta, chicken, or beef. The oatmeal was cold. Also, self-service is promoted, meaning you get your own coffee, juice, water, soda, etc. Not the typical experience at an all-inclusive resort. The staff is not friendly and all they care about is setting the table after people leave. We ended up going to town to eat often, which became expensive. The drinks were horrible - cheap liquor. We kept tipping the bartender in hopes the drinks would get better and they didn't, so we bought a bottle in town and drank it throughout the duration of the trip. The Italian restaurant provided good service, but the food was mediocre. POOL/BEACH: The pool is hot. It was not refreshing which was disappointing because the humidity in Costa Rica is like none I have ever experienced. The beach was rocky and the waves were too high to swim in. There are ample amounts of chairs. The pool itself looks like it was never cleaned which was comical because the security guards do not allow you to bring drinks in the pool or drink it at the edge of the pool. They said they would have to clean the whole pool if a drink fell in. Perhaps they should take a look at the pool as it's in need of a cleaning - bugs, hair, debris from the tree are just a few of many things that we saw in the pool. Go to the beach to view the sunset. It's beyond beautiful! Keep a lookout for monkeys, iguanas, racoons, skunk, and more. You will see them at the resort. Also, watch out when walking the pathway to the rooms. They do not maintain the coconut trees very well and a piece fell off and landed right in front of 3 people walking to the pool. ENTERTAINMENT: The animation team was such a disappointment. Most would walk by and not even say hello or good morning. Games were minimal and they either hung out at the ping pong table or in the kids play area. Even the shows were not very entertaining. I am use to the animation teams in Mexico and DR who have a lot of energy and are very friendly. There is a band that plays daily under the hut near the pool and in the lobby in the evening. They were my favorite part of the resort. The singer is so engaging and the band is super talented. Remember to tip them! The club could be better. The DJ plays some crazy playlist and doesn't read the crowd. Most people walked out. He should really check out the crowd and play what he sees people want to dance to. SPA: We got a couples massage which was great. The massage therapists give an amazing massage which includes a facial. The only downfall was the spa smelled really bad in the reception area, like sewer. TIPS: - Bring an umbrella(s). The rain is no joke. Bring tons of bug repellent. The mosquitos will eat you alive! Bring sunscreen, the sun is very strong there! - If taking a cab, ask the driver how much it is before you go. Typically $6-8 to go to town. Some will try to charge $6 per person. You can also walk to town (about 20 min walk) - Change your money into colones (local currency) or have small bills for cash. They give back colones in change. - Visit Jusy at the excursions desk. She is so friendly and will find an excursion for you that will be enjoyable. We went to the mangroves (10 mins from the hotel) and saw a crocodile, monkeys, and some unique birds. If you pay cash, it's cheaper.

Beautiful country, beautiful people.

Bring cash. Bring bug repellent. We loved the location of our resort as it was walking distance to the city center / small town. We felt safe and loved having a place to go outside of the resort. Great restaurants and bars right on beachfront which made it extra special. LOVED that it remains local establishments and not commercialized, I will definitely return.

The perfect beach stay!

amhelton (Dumas, Arkansas) on Jun 11, 2024

I thoroughly enjoyed staying at Occidental Tamarindo. Every staff member that I came into contact was so friendly and helpful. The food was readily available and there were always many different options to choose from. The fresh fruit was my favorite. The beach area was nice and easy to get to. It was such a beautiful location. The pool was spacious and the perfect temperature throughout my stay. My room was clean and comfortable. There were always plenty of parking for guests who had cars and the resort was only a short walk from town! The location was great and a perfect place for individuals, friends, or families. I would definitely stay here again!

Do not come. It was awful.

Diane R on Jun 09, 2024

The resort is old and broken down. The food is beyond horrible. We spent close to $200 a day eating in town because it was that bad. Our room leaked from the light above into the sink constantly. This was our second room which was much better than the first. The first room was dark, dirty, and broken down. The staff was awesome despite the disrepair of the hotel. Johnathan went out of his way to move us to a much better room. Unfortunately we didn’t know it would leak from the ceiling constantly through the recessed light.

Rooms are poorly maintained. Staff is not friendly, some rules are ridiculous, and the food makes this place even worse.
