A Very Special Place...........

markzz2 (London, United Kingdom) on Jun 12, 2024

I have written many reviews on this property for two reasons, I come quite often (over many years) and I absolutely think it is a very special place. The hotel has an amazing history, the first ever Marriott resort, still owned by the company and a personal favourite of the Marriott family. Photos on the walls of the lobby areas show the family sharing times with Hollywood stars of bygone times at The Camelback Inn. The property takes pride in the gardens and the outside areas, all perfectly kept and well maintained. Colourful flowers and plants (and Cacti), and lots of animals and birds which are a delight to see. Jack Rabbits are everywhere and try and take an early morning walk to see the families of Quails, Hummingbirds and Chipmunks wandering around. The rooms are modern but with a southwestern twist, and have been updated to include USB charging and really big TV screens. We had a large room with a very well equipped bathroom and a balcony with a view of Camelback Mountain. Clean and very comfortable. We ate in the hotel several times, and food and drink at Rita's and Lincoln restaurant is very good. Breakfast at Rita's is especially good with excellent Hash browns (not to be missed) and fluffy pancakes. Steaks at Lincoln are the best in town. Service as always was friendly and timely. If you want some tranquility the Spa is the place to go, it is peaceful and calm and exactly what we look for. The pool at the spa is at the top of the hill and has amazing views. The pool service there is super friendly and attentive. The Jack rabbit pool sadly has been "reimagined" since our last visit which has seen them introduce more personal Cabanas which are charged for, and less space for normal sunbeds which seem to have been crammed in. There is nowhere to go to escape the noise of loud music and the only area that is a little quieter is the small "adult pool" sadly which they now charge $50 a day to sit at. I truly think that in this stunning resort it would be nicer to have peace and quiet where you can read a book and admire the stunning views and listen to the birds. By far the biggest plus at The JW Marriott Camelback Inn is the staff. This trip we were especially impressed by the kindness and friendly attitude shown from everyone. Bell men waved as they drove past in buggies, Managers spent time to make sure we were happy and I would say that everyone went the extra mile to make our stay a good one. We cannot wait to go back....... it really is a special and unique place to visit.

Comfy room, but small pool area and overall could use some updating

Simbet (Minneapolis, Minnesota) on Jun 09, 2024

We spent one night at the JW Marriott Camelback Resort over Memorial Day weekend. One of us is a Titanium member and we used points to book the room. We got a complimentary upgrade to a room with a large sundeck along with a small balcony. There were a number of positives. The bed was the usual comfy Marriott bed and pillows, and the temperature control was great; we slept really well. The bedroom décor was updated, and we had a little wet bar with a mini sink, mini fridge, mini Keurig and microwave. There was a separate additional vanity/sink area outside the bathroom. Great wifi in the room. Parking is convenient and there’s a lot of it scattered around. The landscaping was very pretty, with multitudes of heat-loving flowers and plants; there was also great bird watching! They put in an excellent fitness center in the new spa/pool complex; the fitness center (but not the new pool) is free for resort guests. For breakfast, we chose to take the complimentary breakfast buffet in lieu of banking some extra Marriott points, and found that breakfast was good and extensive (scrambled eggs and eggs to order, tons of fresh fruit, cereals, yogurts, bacon, pancakes, smoked salmon, and so forth.) Staff were friendly. The negatives were disappointing for us: the pool is shockingly small for the size of the resort, and that weekend it was packed with humanity, reminiscent of unhappy childhood memories at the free outdoor municipal pool. We took one look and said nope. Marriott could do with expanding the pool area by about quadruple for a proper resort experience. The other pool in the aforementioned new spa complex looked lovely and was definitely calmer, but we were told that the pool is only available to people who book a (typical resort-priced) spa service or buy a day pass which we recollect was $150. In our room, the bathroom was very small and we were bizarrely unable to get cool water in the shower – instead we got hot, hotter, hottest! On one of our glass doors leading to the balcony, moisture had gotten in over the years and as a result the glass was clouded over. A combination of small things gave us the overall impression that Marriott needs to spend a little money refurbishing and updating aspects of the resort. For these reasons, we’d probably try another property on our next visit to the area.
