Personally, I just wouldn't

Lilli H on Jan 10, 2026

Let me first start this off by saying that the beach itself was absolutely beautiful. My family stayed at the Occidental Nuevo from 12/27/25 through 01/02/26. This was a large family trip as this is what my fiancé's grandmother requested for her birthday in May, so this is when the planning began. There 18 of us in total including 3 small children and we booked 6 rooms separately, 4 of those being royal level. Originally, we had seen this resort on Costco Travel and tried to book that way, but they sold out. This left our group all booking separate ways. I checked several of the travel sites where I was given huge differences in price. For instance, our group of 3, 2 adults and 1 child under the age of 2, would have been $10,000 and some through booking.com, yet other sites were around $3,000 to $5,000. We ended up booking directly through the resort for an ocean view room - no balcony for $2300, and paid half at the time of booking and the other half at time of check in. However, any time we tried to call to check on our booking because we never got a confirmation email the phone was either never answered or we were hung up on. We also ended up upgrading our services to the royal level after the first day, so room service was included in our stay, we had access to the royal level pool and bar, and we had access to more food options. Now to the resort itself, it is pretty dated and run down and our room smelled so much like mold we could not run our air. Our child and myself would become super congested at night when we would be in the room and I would wake up with a headache every morning from how strong it was. There are other reviews across multiple booking sites stating the same and some even have pictures of the visible mold in their rooms, ours was all in our vent. Everything else in our room worked and was pretty standard. It was not the cleanest upon check in with there still being some hair in the shower area. We were also across from the elevator on the 5th floor, and you could hear EVERYTHING from the elevator itself and the lobby downstairs, as well as the bar when they would have live entertainment. The entertainment did stop at a reasonable hour though. The food - was not great or allergy friendly really. Only 2 of the restaurants could accommodate us if we all wanted to eat together as a whole group and even then, we were given a hard time in the Mexican restaurant. I am allergic to fish, shellfish, and mushrooms so my options were pretty limited. Most of the staff was very nice about this and tried to be as accommodating as possible. The quality of the food overall could be better. If you are a royal level guest, the food on the 7th floor is better than downstairs at least for breakfast. The buffet downstairs was lacking. The lettuce at the salad bar often times had dirt on it still. The quality of ingredients just really is not there. There was one night the buffet was pretty much entirely fish and shellfish. I am also pretty positive they fry everything together in the fryers so if you have allergies, please be careful. The Mexican restaurant was the only other restaurant on the property that could supposedly accommodate our group but when we actually went down for our reservation, they were refusing to sit us all together claiming their restaurant would be too full. This was on the 1st. Our reservation was at 7 and the restaurant had maybe 5 other groups in there dining and ALL of the other tables were empty. They wanted just my partner, myself, and our child to sit separately from the rest of our group and said that if we pulled our table over that it would block the access to the outside dining area. This was simply just untrue as you could walk through in two other places to access the deck AND there were no customers out there the entire time we dined. Only after tipping and making a big deal out of the situation then were we allowed to move the table New Years Experience - To reserve a table for the new year's celebration you had to buy an alcohol package, ours was $300. We also had to do that for our dinner that night on the 7th floor to all be able to sit together, so $600 in total at somewhere that's supposed to be all inclusive. The staff - Most of the staff is actually lovely and you can tell they are just doing their best in a situation that is out of their hands. All of the bartenders were friendly and gave great service. The majority of the buffet servers were nice, but they could serve drinks in a timelier manner. There were a few occasions my partner and I would sit down to eat, and we wouldn't receive a drink until we were almost finished eating. The staff that was working the 7th floor were all very nice and accommodating. The royal level amenities - the pool area itself was nicer and less crowded. Having access to the cabanas is a nice touch but no one is actually checking bracelets to make sure it is only the royal level guests. Room service is also included, and they do offer it throughout the night, which is nice, but it did take 50 minutes for a plate of french fries. There were also a few times where we would try to make a reservation for something for our group, and we were given a hard time and told we could not, but another member of our group would go and be able to make it just fine. All in all, I would pay the little bit extra to stay somewhere else.

Great resort and amenities

Mike D on Jan 10, 2026

Hotel and the grounds were beautiful. Food was the best of many all-inclusive resorts have stayed at. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Want to especially say Karen on the Royal Level was very friendly and took care of any needs. Admittedly the Royal Level is an upgrade but believe totally worth it.
