Public park or luxury hotel?!??
Dan H on Nov 29, 2024
Beautiful property but The Del is basically a public park at this point. You’ll deal with hundreds / thousands of people who don’t stay here who all compete against you for services. The main bar is grossly understaffed, full of people that normally wouldn’t be there, and it feels like the staff are way overstressed and thus unsympathetic to care. I’m all for hotels making money (and I stay in hotels over 150 nights per year) but the fees this hotel charges - from $13 for a bottle of water to a $250 min spend for a table with a fire pit - feels especially insulting. Why would you pay top dollar to stay here when you can just do what everyone else does and invade like locus? You really only need to stay for an hour or so to capture the beauty of the hotel - beyond that you are setting yourself up for a miserable experience exacerbated by how much you pay for that misery.
Someday not over the rainbow

Besides the golf course, Coronado was not an Emerald Isle and seemed rather fake. However, the hotel was charming and festive before Thanksgiving with Christmas trees, carols, and even a skating rink in the back below the bar. It’s also very noisy with bulldozers, construction, and a total remake. There were patrons mostly for the pizza and marketplace, although gelato never goes out of style (like coffee). Managed by the Hilton on Tijuana jurisdiction, the historic hotel is a National Heritage Site after the likes of shady Kate Morgan and President Taft stayed here. The Windsor “cottage” on site is the former commandant’s home until 1920 of the current Naval Amphibious Base Coronado (NAB); the beach behind runs toward Naval Outlying Landing Field, Imperial Beach (NOLF). A shuttle conveniently takes Hilton guests between the Coronado and the Convention Center/Hilton Bayfront. It runs every hour on the half hour in front at Glorietta Bay crossing. Its situation’s perfect even if the past and present isn’t!
