Not worth the money

Broo R on Dec 16, 2025

Room was cramped, parking was so unexpectedly expensive, resort fee ups the price per night. Property is older and has no elevators that I saw. Additionally, I have been overcharged about $600 and I'm having a difficult time getting that refunded. No one answers the phone right now at the desk, the person in charge of refunding me did not do his job, and the follow up person did nothing as well. The good thing I can say was the staff were all very nice.

Nice but needs attention

Thayne R on Dec 15, 2025

Kona Kai is a lovely old hotel. But for an establishment that, to me, is rather on the expensive side, I thought they could have done a better job with the little things: I had to ask twice for soap and paper towels in the ballroom ladies room; the handicapped stall was locked; there was dog waste on a main sidewalk for two days. I mean, really?

Business Trip to Kona Kai

The room and grounds were beautiful and every staff member was so kind and helpful! The conference rooms and restaurant were so clean, and the views were stunning!

Wow, this is one of the most disappointing Amex hotel collections they have. Putting SD to shame.

Terrible service, waited twice in a long line for front desk. First time was when my friends and I came in, second time was when all our keys stopped working in the midst of our ongoing trip and wanting to come back after a long day to which we couldn’t get into any of the parking. Wait time was 30 minutes each time in the front desk and they do not have any urgency to get any help or additional staff to help. Amex travelers comes with a lot of “phony perks” like free breakfast for two up to 84 dollars. Mission Bay Resort (close by Seaworld has à la carte serving for breakfast restaurant). Here at Kona Kai, they give you a Marriott/ Hilton special and charge you 35 bucks per person for continental buffet style breakfast and charge a gratuity and expect you to tip additionally on top of the gratuity. Apparently they changed that as of this year, and probably cheap out with the powdered eggs they serve! Room was subpar, shower had noticeable rust, caulk work done on the showers, and wallpaper is partly removed in bathroom. Probably the worst experience and would’ve reliably got a better experience in a 3 star Hilton or Marriott. But I guess they have a fire pit and yachts in proximity to look at all day if that’s what you care about!

Fantastic atmosphere

Jens S on Dec 14, 2025

Amazing hotel with great staff and great restaurant. We stayed for 4 nights and used the hotub/spa every night. Pool was almost always empty. Heated so great even in “colder” months. Fire pits on the beach was a great way to relax after seeing family :). Great bar all over just a very fantastic stay
