Nice hotel, Pleasureable stay if you have premium.

RangMX (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) on Jun 14, 2024

We really enjoyed our stay at the Barcelo Huatulco. We were premium with an oceanfront room. Arrival was very nice, and check in quick. I have to strongly disagree with the remarks that have been made about the premium receptionists. The girls at the reception were always friendly and smiling and willing to help with anything. Our room was everything we could hope for, a gorgeous view and a wide spacious patio, big bathroom etc. We don't spend alot of time in the room, but it was very quick to walk to anywhere in the resort. There are shows everynight and they were outstanding, and very original shows that I have not seen at other Barcelo resorts. There was also a cantina bar with live music for dancing every night we were there. I wanted to sing Karaoke but apparently that is only Sunday night. As premium we were allowed to eat at all three of the ala cartes. I would rate them as superior dining experiences. We really enjoyed the Mexican and Italian restaurants. I love Japanese food but I did not like the quality of the sashimi at that one. We enjoyed the gym and mini golf everyday. We also enjoyed the activities at the pool with the activity staff, and played some trivia and volleyball (both beach and water). As far as negatives: I don't understand why only one bar is open at a time. . Guests are basically stuck having to go to whatever bar is open. The pool bar is always crowded. The lobby bar apparently is only open around dinner time and closes when the cantina opens. The cantina does not have take out cups so that you can bring a drink back to the room and its the only bar open after 10.30pm. The premium bar is open till late and is air conditioned, however there is only a limited amount of mixed drinks available. I would not even dream of staying at the Barcelo Huatulco unless as a premium guest, because of the bar and buffet situations! I honestly felt sorry for the non premium guests. They only allow guests to keep their guest band for one hour after checkout. Unlike every single AI resort I have been to in Mexico! The poor guests had to sit in the hot lobby waiting for their flights while the premium guests watched TV on the Air conditioned premium couches. Going to the airport would not be an alternative either since at the small airport they don't open the lines for checkin till about an hour before the next flight. We stood there for an hour because we arrived two hours before our flight! To get to the lounge you had to have your ticket to get through security. The buffets are very limited. The premium buffet is extremely limited and not really worth visiting. There is enough food at the buffets that I feel everyone will find something they like, but there is not much to choose from. They do have ceviche and some seafood salads, and you can get fajitas for lunch. The view of the beach from the restaurant is beautiful. Maybe the worst thing about the resort is that the beach is for the most part unusable. I am sure there is a red flag out everyday. Between the surf, and undertow, and steep entrance and exit, only strong swimmers should use it. If you walk down the beach to the other hotel the waves are a little less strong. You can always take a very cheap taxi for $2-5 and be at another beach in less then 30 minutes. Huatulco is a small town. We never leave our AI resorts but we did take a trip to La Entrega beach which has wonderful snorkeling. Farther out is San Agustin, (its an hour away but will soon be much faster due to a new road) and the taxi costs about $90 round trip. It is honestly one now one of my favorite beaches in all of Mexico. The water is crystal clear and the reef is just 20 meters off shore and teeming with sealife. I would recommend anyone visiting Huatulco to avoid Vacation periods such as Christmas, Easter, Summer vacation etc, since with the new highway the small town of Huatulco is completely flooded with large families of noisy individuals from other parts of Mexico - especially Mexico City, and the beaches reach maxiumum capicity. This also happens on the weekends. We were there during low season in May and the water was elbow to elbow at several beaches, on Friday and Saturday. There were dozens of tour buses parked at the beaches. The Barcelo overfilled with guests as well from Thur-Sun. Since Huatulco is only a quick 2 hour flight from Mexico city and an overnight bus ride, it is very much a quick vacation retreat for Mexico city families. That said, I would love to go back. But only on weekdays.
