First time at Andaz West Hollywood

dokken (Terrigal, Australia) on May 04, 2024

We've been to LA many times but this was the first time with our Son and grandkids (9 and 14 years) Maybe not the fist choice for a family hotel, but we stayed as the first night after a flight from Australia and wanted somewhere we'd never been to get over jetlag. As a treat I booked The Penthouse for myself and my wife and a normal room for my Son and kids. We're in the live music business, so the history of the hotel isn't lost on us - I know it's not the same as the old Riot House....... but if those walls could talk..... The location is not everyones cup of tea, but we like walking. Even so, there's plenty of food and shopping options pretty close by. It was a better than expected experience..... right from the start where I called the hotel to ask about the possibility of an early check-in as our flight landed at 0630 and they came through with the early check-in for both rooms - VERY appreciated. Easy check in and they explained everything about the hotel. There was a bunch of snacks in the foyer that they said were complimentary (great for the kids). The Penthouse is actually Room #1420 even though the elevator says "PH" to get up there and there are several other rooms on that floor. It's a great room with HUGE bathroom where you can have the blinds open and see the whole of LA and the hills (and they can probably see you), so you can choose to be an exhibitionist or not. Good sized bedroom, king bed with walk-in wardrobe and a great sized living room with kitchenette. The balcony is accessible from the bedroom and lounge room and has some lounging / seating furniture and of course amazing views. There's a TV in the bedroom and Lounge Room and a great sound system and there's even a Peloton bike in the bedroom. On the slight downside, the room does feel a bit old, but that's not such as bad thing. The aircon is a bit on the noisy side I thought. The other room was what I'd call an normal 4+ Star hotel room - ok, but not amazing. The rooftop pool was great for the kids, however, it does quickly get full of people in / on all the cabanas / lounges and it seemed more about tanning / lounging / drinking than actually getting wet. I'd read that the Riot House Restaurant was on the expensive side and they were right - the food and drinks offered are great, but dear and as our Oz Dollar it at about .60 US Cents it's even more expensive so we went out just down Sunset and bought some pizza, wine and other drinks and had a pseudo party in the Penthouse and watched the lights of LA while playing some tunes - tame by the standards of THAT Penthouse, but we called it a homage.... We didn't do breakfast at the hotel. We walked down Sunset to a place 10min away and then kept walking all the way to Rodeo Drive and UBERed back to the hotel. Another nice thing..... I asked for a 1pm Check-Out and the hotel said YES without even flinching (now I know that's not always the case and always subject to availability) - once again ALWAYS appreciated. Andaz is a Hyatt brand and they seem to be looking at a cool / boutique vibe to these properties and this was evident at this Andaz. We liked this hotel and would stay there again.
