2.5 - 3 Star at best

Karen E on May 18, 2024

Went on a girls trip mid April; some were on a budget so it was either Cuba or this. Because of all the problems with shortages of many supplies and amenities in Cuba we decided to come here. When we first arrived, check in was quick and smooth, however when we got to our room it was really outdated but it was clean. The AC was so loud that we requested a different room the next day and we were moved to an oceanfront room. It was quite a bit better but still had that college dorm room sparse vibe. The property was clean and seemed well maintained. The food was adequate - we did enjoy the Mexican restaurant but the lack of availability when trying to book a dinner reservation at any restaurant there was dismal. The good news was that we’d never starve because they had plenty of hot dog pizza on the buffet! The buffet was meh, same stuff every day but was ok. The only bar at the resort was interesting, I’ve never had to line up like cattle to order a drink. There was one bartender, Elizabeth, who constantly was yelling at the guests. We witnessed this every day, it was terrible the way she was so rude. I believe that the alcohol is very watered down, not one drink any one of us could taste the alcohol at all. We had to go to the grocery store across the street to buy booze for our drinks. The overall dining/drink experience felt very DIY - we had to fill our own water/pop from the fountains most of the time, rarely had a server come to our tables to refill. I felt bad for the entertainment staff most days, they were always around, dancing, putting on shows etc but they didn’t seem overly enthusiastic about it. The beach was nice, tons of vendors approaching to sell their stuff but they backed off when you said no. We ended up walking down the beach after a few days to Cabarete for dinner each night off resort. It was a much better option, the food was amazing, service was great and it was cheap to eat/drink in town! We are generally good tippers at resorts but after a few days we stopped because the staff only seemed to be slightly interested in you AFTER you tipped, not before. Overall we had good time away because a vacation is the people you’re with and what you make of it and we did the best with what we had but I definitely won’t return to this resort. I would have expected better from a Wyndham but now we know to just spend a few extra bucks and go to a better resort!

Don’t go ! Beach is rough food is meh - only 1 bar 1 pool

Lisi2287 (Cambridge, Canada) on May 12, 2024

In one line summary - go elsewhere ! Unless you’re getting it dirt cheap and just want a getaway but keep your expectations low 2 star. Food - is not great not bad just meh . The buffet is boring and has a lot of random things like mashed bananas or weird purées. Sushi night was disappointing no fish on the island (actually the fish served is often undercooked) sushi was 1 piece of red pepper or banana) The breakfast egg station is the best. The coffee is weak - cappuccino available at the bar in am is way better. There was a fancy moccacino/ espresso machine at the snack bar but it worked only 1 days then didn’t work the rest of the week …. The beach - disappointing for kids ! Not kid friendly at all - very rough waves and most days are red flags. Even on yellow flag days they kept kicking us out of the ocean which sucked. Pool - there’s only one and it’s not well balanced I got a rash the only time I used it. Kiddie pool is a joke - it’s a splash puddle not a pool. Kid zone was always closed even during “open hours “ and the daily activities were always cancelled which was disappointing for the kids no foam party no golf - the only thing they could do was draw… they did enjoy trapeze lessons with Ricardo! Room - was pleasantly surprised that the all together room was actually 2 rooms one for kids with 2 single beds and one with a king size bed. However we wish that they were switched around so that the kids room is not on the side of the door. Also the balcony on the adult side is so tiny you can’t sit down. Rooms are dated and we had a leak from the roof. Cleaning staff had to ask many times for more towels as we were 5 and they kept leaving 4 towels. Maintenance staff/ front desk - had to call 4 times the front desk to get help with safety box not working before someone finally came - and had to call 3 times to get a crib for the little one. Entertainment staff - lady lava, Ricardo aka 69 tentacion and chelo do a great job. Chelo actually knew my kids names super fast and once came up to me to let me know my kid was headed towards the pool. I appreciated him being concerned for their safety. Jairo is the best waiter always smiling and super friendly and Nori is a great bartender. Photoshop guy was extremely rude. I met him on day one and usually book an photoshoot on every one of our trips. I told him we would come back annd see him later in the week ans we had just gotten there and my husband didn’t feel well. The next day he came up to me and swore at me saying “are you fuqcing with me” in front of my kids and repeated it twice because I didn’t come back to see him after not even 12 hours !? I told him he would not get my business from being that rude and ignored him the rest of the week ! It was my husbands birthday and mine 2 days later we let the front desk and staff know and got nothing special for us. One guy at the viva concierge (short bald guy) offered me a breakfast a la carte that we assumed was for our birthday was a complete scam. Some guy Ramon sat with us trying to sell us a viva club membership and we told him at that time we weren’t interested and we were only there 1 day and kids wanted to go to beach after 2.5 hours of saying no and wasting our time I had to get mad and walk away as they wouldn’t let us go. Stay away from the “free a la carte breakfast”. The sellers - are representative and most don’t do their own art or work which is lame ! We liked the one painter who painted custom art on the spot he was super reasonable and made a custom 20*24 art for my husband for 30$ US. We also really liked Guylaine aka Rafaela the jewelry seller she spoke French and translated for us many times. Other sellers are agressive and rude and call you cheap trying to make you pay 20$ us for a bracelet that my 6 yr old could make for a 1$. A la carte - impossible to book hate the fact that they tell you you can go 3 times but the restaurants are always closed or fully booked and you can only book 24 hours in advance so you have to line up at the concierge every day to try to get in somewhere the melt - fusion restaurant was pretty good - we were 5 and it’s a small menu so we ordered everything and shared. We enjoyed the marlin dish and tuna tartare and the crème brûlée. The kids liked the pistachio soup the best and the cup of fruit and the chicken. La vela - Italian restaurant - had to fight to get a table here before we left on our last day ! Was the best meal all week so glad we went - kids loved the gnocchi, my hubby liked the steak and the potatoes were delicious. The pepperoni pizza was good but stay away from The cheese pizza it has blue cheese and it’s so gross none of us could eat it. So annoying that there’s NO room service for food and you’re not allowed to take food to your room from the buffet - they wouldn’t even let us take the 2 slices of pizza left from la vela like why !? You’re going to throw it out anyway ! All in all glad we went during the off season for a great price so it was ok. I would’ve been pissed if I paid 2000$ a person to be here. The food was meh, the service was ok and with only 1 bar it’s always line ups I couldn’t imagine during a busy season. Wouldn’t recommend or return.

Quick family get away

SuzieQ7878 (Toronto, Canada) on May 11, 2024

170 suite resort, small and sweet. Great for anyone who doesn't want the huge style resorts. The overall resort experience was good. The staff were friendly. Rooms were clean and food was good. 4 à la carte restaurants. You'll get the à la carte experience if you are a Viva VIP in the buffet. There is one pool with one bar, didn't feel I waited for long periods of time to get drinks. Dominican coffee was delicious as usual! The beach was clean, but you won't get the white sands on the north part of the island. The ocean was red flag for the most part, so swimming wasn't an option, just a quick dip. Great waves and winds for water sports. Wisbert was a great host go-to if we needed anything.
