A little piece of heaven

Absolutely stunning, quiet and wonderful staff. Arrived from UK, booked with TUI. The airport experience and trip to resort was better than expected. Queues for checks for Vapes and imported tobacco but it moves fairly quickly. Its about and 1.5 transfer to resort on a fully ac bus so it was fine. Smooth checking we pre checked in via app, which is a must to get and set up prior to arrival to ensure you get your ala carte bookings. TUI advised us of works at hotel and they barely disturb you and concentrated to near the lobby. We got offered a free upgraded room which was stunning, restocked fridge daily and room service on demand. Best ala carte in our opinion was the Indian, beautiful decor and food, although we enjoyed most. We were disappointed with the Dolce Vita but it is personal choice. No bed wars or unruly behaviour, although we did experience some very drunk guests in Tulum and Coba, when visiting during the day which was a shame. This us not the hotels issue its the people visiting. Definitely glad we paid more to stay in the Luxury Akumul rather than the other hotels in the resort. If you are a beach lover then it is worth mentioning that there is a large amount of seaweed/grass which staff try to manage but it is in vain. The sea isn't the best, rocky and not the prettiest beach I've been to although it did offer a nice sea breeze which was often needed to escape the heat around the pool areas. Would come back in a heartbeat and highly recommend.

Pros and cons below. This review is honest and aimed at helping those looking to book, of course it is based on my experience/opinion. This was a second visit to the resort, our first was pre-covid and i would say it has digressed. PROS: 1) The majority of the staff are really friendly and welcoming and do go above and beyond to create a good experience… in particular Carolina from guest experience in the adults only block was excellent and super friendly , louis who checked us in, the staff at katok restaurant, and the bar staff around the various pools as well as the sports bar. 2) The Katok a la carte and gran tortuga served great food in a nice atmosphere with great service. 3)Room in the adult suite was modern and spacious with good facilities, refreshments in the fridge and towels were re stocked daily. No issues with basics such as hot water or air conditioning. 4)The ongoing construction works are minimal and do not disturb you ie with noise or mess. 5) the resort is in a good location, especially uf you are looking at going to xelha it is only 10 minutes driving. Additionally, not far from playa del carmen, and airport is an hour and a half or so away. 6) The resort is maintained well and looked after, staff on top of cleaning and cutting grass etc. 7) Array of harmless wildlife roaming the resort is a nice touch. 8) All inclusive alcohol was good with a variety of options (note that individual bars slightly vary on what they have e.g. some have certain spirits that others do not) CONS: 1) The food offering in the buffet and snack bar was poor in all honesty. Food often cold to the point if being inedible, and, during a near on 2 week stay got boring with no real changes to what was on offer. The buffet and snack bar service was not great either, at times waiting over 25 minutes just to have a drink order taken (note this visit was just myself and one other person and due to the time of year, it was often quiet). Additionally, this, in combination with A gentleman at the lobby buffet called Jose was a downer on the service we had from staff elsewhere throughout the resort. On one of our first days he asked what we wanted to drink and after saying one drink he left before we could ask for some water given the heat, when he returned with the fizzy we asked for some water ( which we tried to do before he cut us off) and he told us to order properly next time even though he left before we could finish, slammed the jug on the table and swore to himself in spanish unaware we knew what he said, since then he was very rude to us on the following days with dirty looks also given to us. 2) Albeit limited adults only areas, this is not an adhered to policy. For 5 days of our visit, the lifeguards blatantly ignored children (aged from 4/-12) in the adults only pool. 3) pools. Wide offering but not cleaned throughout the day which results in visibly mucky water as well as presence of bugs. 4)transport within the resort. As a group of 2 often ignored and turned down when trying to get around in the buggies. 5) during the evenings there is little to no entertainment. The hacienda was virtually dead every time we went. 6)shops and stall overpriced which blatantly tries to rip you off, for example, $10 for a bag of crisps. 7) Smoking rules not adhered to. Resort is supposed to only allow smoking and vaping in designated areas, (bare in mind i am a smoker myself and followed this rule), yet a lot of people vaping pool side blatantly in front of staff to no enforcing of the rules. 8) When a holiday such as this one is expensive, it is not nice to see external promoters from various tourist industries take the mick and get a load of free drinks in front of you when you have paid for them in the overall price of your holiday. 9) external promoters do overstep the boundaries to the point where one day while asleep on a lounger i was woken up and touched by one who was trying to sell tickets to an external event. 10) do extra research when booking as although not bothered personally by the construction, we were unaware of this and may influence your decision when booking. 11) the beach on the resort was unusable due to sea weed, I appreciate this is nature’s will and not the fault of the resort, but this is something to look out for when booking. 12) the Italian restaurant had poor portion sizes and the food was very obviously microwaved, however, the staff and service were good. 13) towels. The clean ones given to you for the pool daily are often given dirty. 14) not many hangers in rooms. While the resort not a disaster, it has declined since our last visit. I am not upset sbout the visit but as seen above, definitely some significant areas for improvement. Overall not worth the money.
