Shattered expectations

Having been to Iberostars in Riviera Maya, Dominican Rep., Cozumel, the choice to go back was easy. Travelled as a family, 2 toddlers with strollers, so picked 2 rooms at Maya mostly because of the elevators in the buildings. Sent an email 5 days before travel, asked for the rooms close by, to make sure we have a crib for a 1 year old, and asked if they had non-dairy milk available. The answer was a surprisingly rude "no" to everything: can't promise rooms or cribs, and no milk. So we had to pack a travel crib and a cooler with milk (quite a chore to have 2 extra pieces of luggage). On arrival: the rooms were 3 buildings apart. The room with the toddlers was on the third floor of the only building which had elevator removed for repairs. The crib was in the room, and there were dozens more in their service storage. Every restaurant had at list 5 varieties of non-dairy milk. Why did they have to lie? As far as the rooms - we tried to reason with them, but they refuse to offer anything, and instead started selling us tours and spa treatments. So, the entire week we were running between the buildings and hauling toddlers and strollers to the third floor and back while numerous groups of healthy-looking spring-breakers lived on the first floors or in the buildings with the elevators. Apple vacation reps were simply useless. As far as resort itself, no more meticulous maintenance. The pools are no longer cleaned pristine by 7 AM, you swim with leaves and step on plastic cups. The beaches are no longer combed clean. The koi ponds in the lobby of Paraiso Beach/Del-Mar are completely overrun by algae and look like swamp. The food was great, probably better than I remembered it from last trips. A few years back the government started repairing the beach, and Iberostar moved us to a different hotel. If that's how you remember Iberostars from years ago - the beautiful properties, meticulous maintenance, great service - it's all in the rearview mirror. After this trip I will not be back.
Nice Resort at a good location

We stayed here for six nights and enjoyed every moment of our stay. The hotel received us well and sometimes went out of their way to assist our group of wedding guests (attending my son’s marriage) who numbered close to 130. My below comments are based on personal observations. Check-in: Poor. All guests that attended the wedding took at least two to three hours to check-in. The lady checking us in provided a wrong room bracelet to one of our group members thereby not allowing her access to her own room. Check-out: Average. They could be a little faster. Signage: in my opinion the signage in the resort is poor. Many people commonly got lost. There has to be some improvement in signage. Room: spacious and excellent. Good view of the bush but was not sea-facing. Bathroom: Very good. Housekeeping did automatically refresh supplies and were prompt to respond when we required supplies or change in towels. Room Service: Good, The rooms were cleaned daily. Location: excellent. Close to the Caribbean Sea and only 30 minutes from the airport. Staff: were motivated but many had a problem speaking English. Parking: plenty of parking for those who want to drive to the resort. Breakfast: excellent breakfast choice. A choice of restaurants to choose from. Concierge: friendly and helpful. However some staff there were more focused on time share opportunities at other properties. We declined their invitation. Swimming Pools: they have a number of pools each of which is very good. There is also the wave pool and the lazy river for children. The four water slides are nice too. Beach: nice water at the beach but beware of undercurrents. Respect the warnings (red flag or green flag) put up by coastguards. A lady was saved from drowning when we were there. Sunrise: do go to the beach early in the morning to view a beautiful sunrise. Other recreations – the resort has a number of recreational facilities like archery, yoga sessions etc. Do also go to see the Flamingoes. The concierge can guide you. Restaurants: many restaurants on the premises serve delicious menus on the premises. My favorite restaurant was ‘Under the Sea’ which served excellent sea food. Amenities in the room: room had a fridge, television and coffee maker. No conditions were attached for usage and that made our stay very comfortable. Double Glazed windows – We could not hear much noise from outside because of these windows. Coffee brewers in the room: excellent. Overall: great experience. We enjoyed every moment of our stay because we were respected as guests. Munir D.
