Josue was such a wonderful server! He did an excellent job. He went above and beyond. He was very attentive and the food was delicious. We loved the atmosphere in the restaurant and enjoyed our time there.
A very good hotel which could be great with some changes

We stayed at the Paraiso Maya for nine nights at the beginning of September. As a quick summary, this is a very good hotel with generally great food and drinks, comfortable, well-decorated rooms, in an absolutely stunning setting. There were some negatives which leave something of a sour taste, but overall I would recommend giving the Maya a try.
When we first arrived, there were no rooms with king beds available. We were given a twin room for the first night and were able to change to a king room the next day which was so much better. I don't know if it was an upgraded category (we had waited a long time at reception and had to complain before as we'd been promised a response which never came until I went to reception in person). No real bother though, it was worth the wait.
The restaurants and bars are of a high quality on the whole, with great food selections available every day. It was quite difficult to book the a la carte restaurants, yet whenever we went, they were fairly empty. Definitely try and book in advance as much as possible. The buffets were also good.
The pools and lazy river are lovely. Admittedly the river doesn't have much of a current, but it's enough to slowly get you around. The entire hotel is in a beautiful area with so much wildlife roaming around. It's a large complex but the golf cart bus system works well, we didn't use it often but it never seemed like there was a long wait until the next one.
We tried the golf course one morning, which was very good and highly challenging, but also very expensive - one player with a rider, and hire clubs, was 260 USD - with the hotel discount. Expensive hobby!
The service in the restaurants was sometimes lacking; food and drinks sometimes took a long time to turn up. We lunched at Trattoria Olivetti one day and I ordered a caprese foccacia which was supposed to have mozzarella, tomato, and pesto in it. What turned up, was a bread roll, with mozzarella and guacamole. The waiter didn't seem to understand the issue.
Everything feels like a sales request. On the second day I went to the concierge to ask about booking golf. Firstly, he tried to talk me out of it for some reason, and was questioning my golf skill. After this, he started talking about the breakfast they host to talk about joining the Iberostar Club. I politely declined but he kept pushing it. Eventually he just said "okay, goodbye", and essentially dismissed me without booking the golf. An incredibly rude man. Aside from this, every day people walk around trying to sell you massages, or get you to go to the club talk. In all the a la carte restaurants the "sommelier" would try and persade you to buy incredibly overpriced wines. For the money you pay to stay here, I wouldn't expect to be "encouraged" to spend more money all the time.
